We propose MonoBox, an innovative box-supervised segmentation method constrained by monotonicity to liberate its training from the user-unfriendly box-tightness assumption. In contrast to conventional box-supervised segmentation, where the box edges must precisely touch the target boundaries, MonoBox leverages imprecisely-annotated boxes to achieve robust pixel-wise segmentation. The 'linchpin' is that, within the noisy zones around box edges, MonoBox discards the traditional misguiding multiple-instance learning loss, and instead optimizes a carefully-designed objective, termed monotonicity constraint. Along directions transitioning from the foreground to background, this new constraint steers responses to adhere to a trend of monotonically decreasing values. Consequently, the originally unreliable learning within the noisy zones is transformed into a correct and effective monotonicity optimization. Moreover, an adaptive label correction is introduced, enabling MonoBox to enhance the tightness of box annotations using predicted masks from the previous epoch and dynamically shrink the noisy zones as training progresses. We verify MonoBox in the box-supervised segmentation task of polyps, where satisfying box-tightness is challenging due to the vague boundaries between the polyp and normal tissues. Experiments on both public synthetic and in-house real noisy datasets demonstrate that MonoBox exceeds other anti-noise state-of-the-arts by improving Dice by at least 5.5% and 3.3%, respectively. With the development of large language models (LLMs), detecting whether text is generated by a machine becomes increasingly challenging in the face of malicious use cases like the spread of false information, protection of intellectual property, and prevention of academic plagiarism. While well-trained text detectors have demonstrated promising performance on unseen test data, recent research suggests that these detectors have vulnerabilities when dealing with adversarial attacks such as paraphrasing. In this paper, we propose a framework for a broader class of adversarial attacks, designed to perform minor perturbations in machine-generated content to evade detection. We consider two attack settings: white-box and black-box, and employ adversarial learning in dynamic scenarios to assess the potential enhancement of the current detection model's robustness against such attacks. The empirical results reveal that the current detection models can be compromised in as little as 10 seconds, leading to the misclassification of machine-generated text as human-written content. Furthermore, we explore the prospect of improving the model's robustness over iterative adversarial learning. Although some improvements in model robustness are observed, practical applications still face significant challenges. These findings shed light on the future development of AI-text detectors, emphasizing the need for more accurate and robust detection methods.
Large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable capabilities in text generation tasks. However, the utilization of these models carries inherent risks, including but not limited to plagiarism, the dissemination of fake news, and issues in educational exercises. Although several detectors have been proposed to address these concerns, their effectiveness against adversarial perturbations, specifically in the context of student essay writing, remains largely unexplored. This paper aims to bridge this gap by constructing AIG-ASAP, an AI-generated student essay dataset, employing a range of text perturbation methods that are expected to generate high-quality essays while evading detection. Through empirical experiments, we assess the performance of current AIGC detectors on the AIG-ASAP dataset. The results reveal that the existing detectors can be easily circumvented using straightforward automatic adversarial attacks. Specifically, we explore word substitution and sentence substitution perturbation methods that effectively evade detection while maintaining the quality of the generated essays. This highlights the urgent need for more accurate and robust methods to detect AI-generated student essays in the education domain.
Multimodal learning has exhibited a significant advantage in affective analysis tasks owing to the comprehensive information of various modalities, particularly the complementary information. Thus, many emerging studies focus on disentangling the modality-invariant and modality-specific representations from input data and then fusing them for prediction. However, our study shows that modality-specific representations may contain information that is irrelevant or conflicting with the tasks, which downgrades the effectiveness of learned multimodal representations. We revisit the disentanglement issue, and propose a novel triple disentanglement approach, TriDiRA, which disentangles the modality-invariant, effective modality-specific and ineffective modality-specific representations from input data. By fusing only the modality-invariant and effective modality-specific representations, TriDiRA can significantly alleviate the impact of irrelevant and conflicting information across modalities during model training. Extensive experiments conducted on four benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization of our triple disentanglement, which outperforms SOTA methods.
Beam management, including initial access (IA) and beam tracking, is essential to the millimeter-wave Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) network. However, conventional communication-only and feedback-based schemes suffer a high delay and low accuracy of beam alignment since they only enable the receiver to passively hear the information of the transmitter from the radio domain. This paper presents a novel sensing-assisted beam management approach, the first solution that fully utilizes the information from the visual domain to improve communication performance. We employ both integrated sensing and communication and computer vision techniques and design an extended Kalman filtering method for beam tracking and prediction. Besides, we also propose a novel dual identity association solution to distinguish multiple UAVs in dynamic environments. Real-world experiments and numerical results show that the proposed solution outperforms the conventional methods in IA delay, association accuracy, tracking error, and communication performance.
Subjective time-series regression (STR) tasks have gained increasing attention recently. However, most existing methods overlook the label distribution bias in STR data, which results in biased models. Emerging studies on imbalanced regression tasks, such as age estimation and depth estimation, hypothesize that the prior label distribution of the dataset is uniform. However, we observe that the label distributions of training and test sets in STR tasks are likely to be neither uniform nor identical. This distinct feature calls for new approaches that estimate more reasonable distributions to train a fair model. In this work, we propose Utopia Label Distribution Approximation (ULDA) for time-series data, which makes the training label distribution closer to real-world but unknown (utopia) label distribution. This would enhance the model's fairness. Specifically, ULDA first convolves the training label distribution by a Gaussian kernel. After convolution, the required sample quantity at each regression label may change. We further devise the Time-slice Normal Sampling (TNS) to generate new samples when the required sample quantity is greater than the initial sample quantity, and the Convolutional Weighted Loss (CWL) to lower the sample weight when the required sample quantity is less than the initial quantity. These two modules not only assist the model training on the approximated utopia label distribution, but also maintain the sample continuity in temporal context space. To the best of our knowledge, ULDA is the first method to address the label distribution bias in time-series data. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ULDA lifts the state-of-the-art performance on two STR tasks and three benchmark datasets.
Cortical surface registration plays a crucial role in aligning cortical functional and anatomical features across individuals. However, conventional registration algorithms are computationally inefficient. Recently, learning-based registration algorithms have emerged as a promising solution, significantly improving processing efficiency. Nonetheless, there remains a gap in the development of a learning-based method that exceeds the state-of-the-art conventional methods simultaneously in computational efficiency, registration accuracy, and distortion control, despite the theoretically greater representational capabilities of deep learning approaches. To address the challenge, we present SUGAR, a unified unsupervised deep-learning framework for both rigid and non-rigid registration. SUGAR incorporates a U-Net-based spherical graph attention network and leverages the Euler angle representation for deformation. In addition to the similarity loss, we introduce fold and multiple distortion losses, to preserve topology and minimize various types of distortions. Furthermore, we propose a data augmentation strategy specifically tailored for spherical surface registration, enhancing the registration performance. Through extensive evaluation involving over 10,000 scans from 7 diverse datasets, we showed that our framework exhibits comparable or superior registration performance in accuracy, distortion, and test-retest reliability compared to conventional and learning-based methods. Additionally, SUGAR achieves remarkable sub-second processing times, offering a notable speed-up of approximately 12,000 times in registering 9,000 subjects from the UK Biobank dataset in just 32 minutes. This combination of high registration performance and accelerated processing time may greatly benefit large-scale neuroimaging studies.
Online travel platforms (OTPs), e.g., Ctrip.com or Fliggy.com, can effectively provide travel-related products or services to users. In this paper, we focus on the multi-scenario click-through rate (CTR) prediction, i.e., training a unified model to serve all scenarios. Existing multi-scenario based CTR methods struggle in the context of OTP setting due to the ignorance of the cold-start users who have very limited data. To fill this gap, we propose a novel method named Cold-Start based Multi-scenario Network (CSMN). Specifically, it consists of two basic components including: 1) User Interest Projection Network (UIPN), which firstly purifies users' behaviors by eliminating the scenario-irrelevant information in behaviors with respect to the visiting scenario, followed by obtaining users' scenario-specific interests by summarizing the purified behaviors with respect to the target item via an attention mechanism; and 2) User Representation Memory Network (URMN), which benefits cold-start users from users with rich behaviors through a memory read and write mechanism. CSMN seamlessly integrates both components in an end-to-end learning framework. Extensive experiments on real-world offline dataset and online A/B test demonstrate the superiority of CSMN over state-of-the-art methods.
In speech emotion recognition tasks, models learn emotional representations from datasets. We find the data distribution in the IEMOCAP dataset is very imbalanced, which may harm models to learn a better representation. To address this issue, we propose a novel Pairwise-emotion Data Distribution Smoothing (PDDS) method. PDDS considers that the distribution of emotional data should be smooth in reality, then applies Gaussian smoothing to emotion-pairs for constructing a new training set with a smoother distribution. The required new data are complemented using the mixup augmentation. As PDDS is model and modality agnostic, it is evaluated with three SOTA models on the IEMOCAP dataset. The experimental results show that these models are improved by 0.2\% - 4.8\% and 1.5\% - 5.9\% in terms of WA and UA. In addition, an ablation study demonstrates that the key advantage of PDDS is the reasonable data distribution rather than a simple data augmentation.
Semi-supervised learning via teacher-student network can train a model effectively on a few labeled samples. It enables a student model to distill knowledge from the teacher's predictions of extra unlabeled data. However, such knowledge flow is typically unidirectional, having the performance vulnerable to the quality of teacher model. In this paper, we seek to robust 3D reconstruction of stereo endoscopic images by proposing a novel fashion of bidirectional learning between two learners, each of which can play both roles of teacher and student concurrently. Specifically, we introduce two self-supervisions, i.e., Adaptive Cross Supervision (ACS) and Adaptive Parallel Supervision (APS), to learn a dual-branch convolutional neural network. The two branches predict two different disparity probability distributions for the same position, and output their expectations as disparity values. The learned knowledge flows across branches along two directions: a cross direction (disparity guides distribution in ACS) and a parallel direction (disparity guides disparity in APS). Moreover, each branch also learns confidences to dynamically refine its provided supervisions. In ACS, the predicted disparity is softened into a unimodal distribution, and the lower the confidence, the smoother the distribution. In APS, the incorrect predictions are suppressed by lowering the weights of those with low confidence. With the adaptive bidirectional learning, the two branches enjoy well-tuned supervisions from each other, and eventually converge on a consistent and more accurate disparity estimation. The extensive and comprehensive experimental results on three public datasets demonstrate our superior performance over the fully-supervised and semi-supervised state-of-the-arts with a decrease of averaged disparity error by 13.95% and 3.90% at least, respectively.
