Electro-optic (EO) modulation is a well-known and essential topic in the field of communications and sensing. Its ultrahigh efficiency is unprecedentedly desired in the current green and data era. However, dramatically increasing the modulation efficiency is difficult due to the monotonic mapping relationship between the electrical signal and modulated optical signal. Here, a new mechanism termed phase-transition EO modulation is revealed from the reciprocal transition between two distinct phase planes arising from the bifurcation. Remarkably, a monolithically integrated mode-locked laser (MLL) is implemented as a prototype. A 24.8-GHz radio-frequency signal is generated and modulated, achieving a modulation energy efficiency of 3.06 fJ/bit improved by about four orders of magnitude and a contrast ratio exceeding 50 dB. Thus, MLL-based phase-transition EO modulation is characterised by ultrahigh modulation efficiency and ultrahigh contrast ratio, as experimentally proved in radio-over-fibre and underwater acoustic-sensing systems. This phase-transition EO modulation opens a new avenue for green communication and ubiquitous connections.
Brain tissue segmentation has demonstrated great utility in quantifying MRI data through Voxel-Based Morphometry and highlighting subtle structural changes associated with various conditions within the brain. However, manual segmentation is highly labor-intensive, and automated approaches have struggled due to properties inherent to MRI acquisition, leaving a great need for an effective segmentation tool. Despite the recent success of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for brain tissue segmentation, many such solutions do not generalize well to new datasets, which is critical for a reliable solution. Transformers have demonstrated success in natural image segmentation and have recently been applied to 3D medical image segmentation tasks due to their ability to capture long-distance relationships in the input where the local receptive fields of CNNs struggle. This study introduces a novel CNN-Transformer hybrid architecture designed for brain tissue segmentation. We validate our model's performance across four multi-site T1w MRI datasets, covering different vendors, field strengths, scan parameters, time points, and neuropsychiatric conditions. In all situations, our model achieved the greatest generality and reliability. Out method is inherently robust and can serve as a valuable tool for brain-related T1w MRI studies. Most existing classification methods aim to minimize the overall misclassification error rate, however, in applications, different types of errors can have different consequences. To take into account this asymmetry issue, two popular paradigms have been developed, namely the Neyman-Pearson (NP) paradigm and cost-sensitive (CS) paradigm. Compared to CS paradigm, NP paradigm does not require a specification of costs. Most previous works on NP paradigm focused on the binary case. In this work, we study the multi-class NP problem by connecting it to the CS problem, and propose two algorithms. We extend the NP oracle inequalities and consistency from the binary case to the multi-class case, and show that our two algorithms enjoy these properties under certain conditions. The simulation and real data studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms. To our knowledge, this is the first work to solve the multi-class NP problem via cost-sensitive learning techniques with theoretical guarantees. The proposed algorithms are implemented in the R package "npcs" on CRAN.
We study distributed (strongly convex) optimization problems over a network of agents, with no centralized nodes. The loss functions of the agents are assumed to be similar, due to statistical data similarity or otherwise. In order to reduce the number of communications to reach a solution accuracy, we proposed a preconditioned, accelerated distributed method. An $\varepsilon$-solution is achieved in $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}\big(\sqrt{\frac{\beta/\mu}{(1-\rho)}}\log1/\varepsilon\big)$ number of communications steps, where $\beta/\mu$ is the relative condition number between the global and local loss functions, and $\rho$ characterizes the connectivity of the network. This rate matches (up to poly-log factors) for the first time lower complexity communication bounds of distributed gossip-algorithms applied to the class of problems of interest. Numerical results show significant communication savings with respect to existing accelerated distributed schemes, especially when solving ill-conditioned problems.
Most recent methods used for crowd counting are based on the convolutional neural network (CNN), which has a strong ability to extract local features. But CNN inherently fails in modeling the global context due to the limited receptive fields. However, the transformer can model the global context easily. In this paper, we propose a simple approach called CCTrans to simplify the design pipeline. Specifically, we utilize a pyramid vision transformer backbone to capture the global crowd information, a pyramid feature aggregation (PFA) model to combine low-level and high-level features, an efficient regression head with multi-scale dilated convolution (MDC) to predict density maps. Besides, we tailor the loss functions for our pipeline. Without bells and whistles, extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art results on several benchmarks both in weakly and fully-supervised crowd counting. Moreover, we currently rank No.1 on the leaderboard of NWPU-Crowd. Our code will be made available.
Evolutionary neural architecture search (ENAS) has recently received increasing attention by effectively finding high-quality neural architectures, which however consumes high computational cost by training the architecture encoded by each individual for complete epochs in individual evaluation. Numerous ENAS approaches have been developed to reduce the evaluation cost, but it is often difficult for most of these approaches to achieve high evaluation accuracy. To address this issue, in this paper we propose an accelerated ENAS via multifidelity evaluation termed MFENAS, where the individual evaluation cost is significantly reduced by training the architecture encoded by each individual for only a small number of epochs. The balance between evaluation cost and evaluation accuracy is well maintained by suggesting a multi-fidelity evaluation, which identifies the potentially good individuals that cannot survive from previous generations by integrating multiple evaluations under different numbers of training epochs. For high diversity of neural architectures, a population initialization strategy is devised to produce different neural architectures varying from ResNet-like architectures to Inception-like ones. Experimental results on CIFAR-10 show that the architecture obtained by the proposed MFENAS achieves a 2.39% test error rate at the cost of only 0.6 GPU days on one NVIDIA 2080TI GPU, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed MFENAS over state-of-the-art NAS approaches in terms of both computational cost and architecture quality. The architecture obtained by the proposed MFENAS is then transferred to CIFAR-100 and ImageNet, which also exhibits competitive performance to the architectures obtained by existing NAS approaches. Crowd counting on the drone platform is an interesting topic in computer vision, which brings new challenges such as small object inference, background clutter and wide viewpoint. However, there are few algorithms focusing on crowd counting on the drone-captured data due to the lack of comprehensive datasets. To this end, we collect a large-scale dataset and organize the Vision Meets Drone Crowd Counting Challenge (VisDrone-CC2020) in conjunction with the 16th European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2020) to promote the developments in the related fields. The collected dataset is formed by $3,360$ images, including $2,460$ images for training, and $900$ images for testing. Specifically, we manually annotate persons with points in each video frame. There are $14$ algorithms from $15$ institutes submitted to the VisDrone-CC2020 Challenge. We provide a detailed analysis of the evaluation results and conclude the challenge. In this work, we study the transfer learning problem under high-dimensional generalized linear models (GLMs), which aim to improve the fit on target data by borrowing information from useful source data. Given which sources to transfer, we propose an oracle algorithm and derive its $\ell_2$-estimation error bounds. The theoretical analysis shows that under certain conditions, when the target and source are sufficiently close to each other, the estimation error bound could be improved over that of the classical penalized estimator using only target data. When we don't know which sources to transfer, an algorithm-free transferable source detection approach is introduced to detect informative sources. The detection consistency is proved under the high-dimensional GLM transfer learning setting. Extensive simulations and a real-data experiment verify the effectiveness of our algorithms.
In a dialogue system pipeline, a natural language generation (NLG) unit converts the dialogue direction and content to a corresponding natural language realization. A recent trend for dialogue systems is to first pre-train on large datasets and then fine-tune in a supervised manner using datasets annotated with application-specific features. Though novel behaviours can be learned from custom annotation, the required effort severely bounds the quantity of the training set, and the application-specific nature limits the reuse. In light of the recent success of data-driven approaches, we propose the novel future bridging NLG (FBNLG) concept for dialogue systems and simulators. The critical step is for an FBNLG to accept a future user or system utterance to bridge the present context towards. Future bridging enables self supervised training over annotation-free datasets, decoupled the training of NLG from the rest of the system. An FBNLG, pre-trained with massive datasets, is expected to apply in classical or new dialogue scenarios with minimal adaptation effort. We evaluate a prototype FBNLG to show that future bridging can be a viable approach to a universal few-shot NLG for task-oriented and chit-chat dialogues.
In the past three decades, a large number of metaheuristics have been proposed and shown high performance in solving complex optimization problems. While most variation operators in existing metaheuristics are empirically designed, this paper aims to design new operators automatically, which are expected to be search space independent and thus exhibit robust performance on different problems. For this purpose, this work first investigates the influence of translation invariance, scale invariance, and rotation invariance on the search behavior and performance of some representative operators. Then, we deduce the generic form of translation, scale, and rotation invariant operators. Afterwards, a principled approach is proposed for the automated design of operators, which searches for high-performance operators based on the deduced generic form. The experimental results demonstrate that the operators generated by the proposed approach outperform state-of-the-art ones on a variety of problems with complex landscapes and up to 1000 decision variables.
