In this work, we investigate to use Large Language Models (LLMs) for rumor detection on social media. However, it is challenging for LLMs to reason over the entire propagation information on social media, which contains news contents and numerous comments, due to LLMs may not concentrate on key clues in the complex propagation information, and have trouble in reasoning when facing massive and redundant information. Accordingly, we propose an LLM-empowered Rumor Detection (LeRuD) approach, in which we design prompts to teach LLMs to reason over important clues in news and comments, and divide the entire propagation information into a Chain-of-Propagation for reducing LLMs' burden. We conduct extensive experiments on the Twitter and Weibo datasets, and LeRuD outperforms several state-of-the-art rumor detection models by 3.2% to 7.7%. Meanwhile, by applying LLMs, LeRuD requires no data for training, and thus shows more promising rumor detection ability in few-shot or zero-shot scenarios.
This technical report presents the training methodology and evaluation results of the open-source multilingual E5 text embedding models, released in mid-2023. Three embedding models of different sizes (small / base / large) are provided, offering a balance between the inference efficiency and embedding quality. The training procedure adheres to the English E5 model recipe, involving contrastive pre-training on 1 billion multilingual text pairs, followed by fine-tuning on a combination of labeled datasets. Additionally, we introduce a new instruction-tuned embedding model, whose performance is on par with state-of-the-art, English-only models of similar sizes. Existing game AI research mainly focuses on enhancing agents' abilities to win games, but this does not inherently make humans have a better experience when collaborating with these agents. For example, agents may dominate the collaboration and exhibit unintended or detrimental behaviors, leading to poor experiences for their human partners. In other words, most game AI agents are modeled in a "self-centered" manner. In this paper, we propose a "human-centered" modeling scheme for collaborative agents that aims to enhance the experience of humans. Specifically, we model the experience of humans as the goals they expect to achieve during the task. We expect that agents should learn to enhance the extent to which humans achieve these goals while maintaining agents' original abilities (e.g., winning games). To achieve this, we propose the Reinforcement Learning from Human Gain (RLHG) approach. The RLHG approach introduces a "baseline", which corresponds to the extent to which humans primitively achieve their goals, and encourages agents to learn behaviors that can effectively enhance humans in achieving their goals better. We evaluate the RLHG agent in the popular Multi-player Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game, Honor of Kings, by conducting real-world human-agent tests. Both objective performance and subjective preference results show that the RLHG agent provides participants better gaming experience.
Despite the recent emergence of video captioning models, how to generate the text description with specific entity names and fine-grained actions is far from being solved, which however has great applications such as basketball live text broadcast. In this paper, a new multimodal knowledge supported basketball benchmark for video captioning is proposed. Specifically, we construct a Multimodal Basketball Game Knowledge Graph (MbgKG) to provide knowledge beyond videos. Then, a Multimodal Basketball Game Video Captioning (MbgVC) dataset that contains 9 types of fine-grained shooting events and 286 players' knowledge (i.e., images and names) is constructed based on MbgKG. We develop a novel framework in the encoder-decoder form named Entity-Aware Captioner (EAC) for basketball live text broadcast. The temporal information in video is encoded by introducing the bi-directional GRU (Bi-GRU) module. And the multi-head self-attention module is utilized to model the relationships among the players and select the key players. Besides, we propose a new performance evaluation metric named Game Description Score (GDS), which measures not only the linguistic performance but also the accuracy of the names prediction. Extensive experiments on MbgVC dataset demonstrate that EAC effectively leverages external knowledge and outperforms advanced video captioning models. In recent years there has been significant progress in time series anomaly detection. However, after detecting an (perhaps tentative) anomaly, can we explain it? Such explanations would be useful to triage anomalies. For example, in an oil refinery, should we respond to an anomaly by dispatching a hydraulic engineer, or an intern to replace the battery on a sensor? There have been some parallel efforts to explain anomalies, however many proposed techniques produce explanations that are indirect, and often seem more complex than the anomaly they seek to explain. Our review of the literature/checklists/user-manuals used by frontline practitioners in various domains reveals an interesting near-universal commonality. Most practitioners discuss, explain and report anomalies in the following format: The anomaly would be like normal data A, if not for the corruption B. The reader will appreciate that is a type of counterfactual explanation. In this work we introduce a domain agnostic counterfactual explanation technique to produce explanations for time series anomalies. As we will show, our method can produce both visual and text-based explanations that are objectively correct, intuitive and in many circumstances, directly actionable.
The emergence of pretrained models has significantly impacted Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision to relational datasets. Traditionally, these models are assessed through fine-tuned downstream tasks. However, this raises the question of how to evaluate these models more efficiently and more effectively. In this study, we explore a novel approach where we leverage the meta features associated with each entity as a source of worldly knowledge and employ entity representations from the models. We propose using the consistency between these representations and the meta features as a metric for evaluating pretrained models. Our method's effectiveness is demonstrated across various domains, including models with relational datasets, large language models and image models.
The goal of Continual Learning (CL) is to continuously learn from new data streams and accomplish the corresponding tasks. Previously studied CL assumes that data are given in sequence nose-to-tail for different tasks, thus indeed belonging to Serial Continual Learning (SCL). This paper studies the novel paradigm of Parallel Continual Learning (PCL) in dynamic multi-task scenarios, where a diverse set of tasks is encountered at different time points. PCL presents challenges due to the training of an unspecified number of tasks with varying learning progress, leading to the difficulty of guaranteeing effective model updates for all encountered tasks. In our previous conference work, we focused on measuring and reducing the discrepancy among gradients in a multi-objective optimization problem, which, however, may still contain negative transfers in every model update. To address this issue, in the dynamic multi-objective optimization problem, we introduce task-specific elastic factors to adjust the descent direction towards the Pareto front. The proposed method, called Elastic Multi-Gradient Descent (EMGD), ensures that each update follows an appropriate Pareto descent direction, minimizing any negative impact on previously learned tasks. To balance the training between old and new tasks, we also propose a memory editing mechanism guided by the gradient computed using EMGD. This editing process updates the stored data points, reducing interference in the Pareto descent direction from previous tasks. Experiments on public datasets validate the effectiveness of our EMGD in the PCL setting.
In specific scenarios, face sketch can be used to identify a person. However, drawing a face sketch often requires exceptional skill and is time-consuming, limiting its widespread applications in actual scenarios. The new framework of sketch less face image retrieval (SLFIR)[1] attempts to overcome the barriers by providing a means for humans and machines to interact during the drawing process. Considering SLFIR problem, there is a large gap between a partial sketch with few strokes and any whole face photo, resulting in poor performance at the early stages. In this study, we propose a multigranularity (MG) representation learning (MGRL) method to address the SLFIR problem, in which we learn the representation of different granularity regions for a partial sketch, and then, by combining all MG regions of the sketches and images, the final distance was determined. In the experiments, our method outperformed state-of-the-art baselines in terms of early retrieval on two accessible datasets. Codes are available at https://github.com/ddw2AIGROUP2CQUPT/MGRL.
In this paper, we introduce a novel and simple method for obtaining high-quality text embeddings using only synthetic data and less than 1k training steps. Unlike existing methods that often depend on multi-stage intermediate pre-training with billions of weakly-supervised text pairs, followed by fine-tuning with a few labeled datasets, our method does not require building complex training pipelines or relying on manually collected datasets that are often constrained by task diversity and language coverage. We leverage proprietary LLMs to generate diverse synthetic data for hundreds of thousands of text embedding tasks across nearly 100 languages. We then fine-tune open-source decoder-only LLMs on the synthetic data using standard contrastive loss. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves strong performance on highly competitive text embedding benchmarks without using any labeled data. Furthermore, when fine-tuned with a mixture of synthetic and labeled data, our model sets new state-of-the-art results on the BEIR and MTEB benchmarks.
To combat the potential misuse of Natural Language Generation (NLG) technology, a variety of algorithms have been developed for the detection of AI-generated texts. Traditionally, this task is treated as a binary classification problem. Although supervised learning has demonstrated promising results, acquiring labeled data for detection purposes poses real-world challenges and the risk of overfitting. In an effort to address these issues, we delve into the realm of zero-shot machine-generated text detection. Existing zero-shot detectors, typically designed for specific tasks or topics, often assume uniform testing scenarios, limiting their practicality. In our research, we explore various advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) and their specialized variants, contributing to this field in several ways. In empirical studies, we uncover a significant correlation between topics and detection performance. Secondly, we delve into the influence of topic shifts on zero-shot detectors. These investigations shed light on the adaptability and robustness of these detection methods across diverse topics. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/yfzhang114/robustness-detection}.
