In recent years, the thriving development of research related to egocentric videos has provided a unique perspective for the study of conversational interactions, where both visual and audio signals play a crucial role. While most prior work focus on learning about behaviors that directly involve the camera wearer, we introduce the Ego-Exocentric Conversational Graph Prediction problem, marking the first attempt to infer exocentric conversational interactions from egocentric videos. We propose a unified multi-modal, multi-task framework -- Audio-Visual Conversational Attention (Av-CONV), for the joint prediction of conversation behaviors -- speaking and listening -- for both the camera wearer as well as all other social partners present in the egocentric video. Specifically, we customize the self-attention mechanism to model the representations across-time, across-subjects, and across-modalities. To validate our method, we conduct experiments on a challenging egocentric video dataset that includes first-person perspective, multi-speaker, and multi-conversation scenarios. Our results demonstrate the superior performance of our method compared to a series of baselines. We also present detailed ablation studies to assess the contribution of each component in our model. Visual sensors, including 3D LiDAR, neuromorphic DVS sensors, and conventional frame cameras, are increasingly integrated into edge-side intelligent machines. Realizing intensive multi-sensory data analysis directly on edge intelligent machines is crucial for numerous emerging edge applications, such as augmented and virtual reality and unmanned aerial vehicles, which necessitates unified data representation, unprecedented hardware energy efficiency and rapid model training. However, multi-sensory data are intrinsically heterogeneous, causing significant complexity in the system development for edge-side intelligent machines. In addition, the performance of conventional digital hardware is limited by the physically separated processing and memory units, known as the von Neumann bottleneck, and the physical limit of transistor scaling, which contributes to the slowdown of Moore's law. These limitations are further intensified by the tedious training of models with ever-increasing sizes. We propose a novel hardware-software co-design, random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine (DEPLM), that offers efficient unified point set analysis. We show the system's versatility across various data modalities and two different learning tasks. Compared to a conventional digital hardware-based system, our co-design system achieves huge energy efficiency improvements and training cost reduction when compared to conventional systems. Our random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine may pave the way for energy-efficient and training-friendly edge AI across various data modalities and tasks.
Recent deep multi-view stereo (MVS) methods have widely incorporated transformers into cascade network for high-resolution depth estimation, achieving impressive results. However, existing transformer-based methods are constrained by their computational costs, preventing their extension to finer stages. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-scale transformer (CT) that processes feature representations at different stages without additional computation. Specifically, we introduce an adaptive matching-aware transformer (AMT) that employs different interactive attention combinations at multiple scales. This combined strategy enables our network to capture intra-image context information and enhance inter-image feature relationships. Besides, we present a dual-feature guided aggregation (DFGA) that embeds the coarse global semantic information into the finer cost volume construction to further strengthen global and local feature awareness. Meanwhile, we design a feature metric loss (FM Loss) that evaluates the feature bias before and after transformation to reduce the impact of feature mismatch on depth estimation. Extensive experiments on DTU dataset and Tanks and Temples (T\&T) benchmark demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results. Code is available at https://github.com/wscstrive/CT-MVSNet.
This paper presents Audio-Visual LLM, a Multimodal Large Language Model that takes both visual and auditory inputs for holistic video understanding. A key design is the modality-augmented training, which involves the integration of modality-specific tokens engineered to activate the appropriate visual and/or auditory encoder selectively. This mechanism is pivotal in enabling end-to-end joint training with video data at different modalities, including visual-only, audio-only, and audio-visual formats. Moreover, we introduce a high-quality video instruction dataset, derived from GPT-4. This dataset allows Audio-Visual LLM to adeptly process a variety of task-oriented video instructions, ranging from multi-turn conversations and audio-visual narratives to complex reasoning tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Audio-Visual LLM impressively achieves strong zero-shot results across a range of video understanding tasks. For example, Audio-Visual LLM achieves an accuracy of 53.7% on MSRVTT-QA, outperforming non-LLM-based InterVideo by 6.6% and LLM-based Valley by 4.4%, respectively. Additionally, our Audio-Visual LLM also achieves competitive performance on audio tasks (e.g., AudioCaps).
The massive growth of image-text data through web crawling inherently presents the challenge of variability in data quality. This paper introduces a novel algorithm, rooted in human knowledge, to compress this vast corpus of web-crawled image-text datasets to a compact and high-quality form. Our method unfolds in three major steps. First, we collect an image-text dataset, wherein each image is associated with multiple captions sourced from diverse origins. Then, to systemically capture human preferences regarding the best caption paired with each image, we establish a comprehensive set of both subjective and objective criteria for critically guiding the alignment assessment from labelers. Lastly, we train a reward model on the annotated dataset to internalize the nuanced human understanding of image-text alignment. The resulting reward model thus can act as a human-like referee to filter misaligned/low-quality image-text pairs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that we are able to secure (or even improve) model performance by compressing the image-text datasets up to ~90%. An impressive example is that, by aggressively reducing the total training sample from 130M to 15.5M (e.g., ~9x smaller), our BLIP-B/16 models still consistently show superior performance compared with the full-size-dataset counterpart on image-text retrieval (Flickr30K, COCO) by ~2.5% in Recall@1, and on image-captioning (Nocaps, COCO) by ~10.0% in CIDEr and ~2.7% in SPICE.
An active-sensing-based learning algorithm is proposed to solve the near-field beam alignment problem with the aid of wavenumber-domain transform matrices (WTMs). Specifically, WTMs can transform the antenna-domain channel into a sparse representation in the wavenumber domain. The dimensions of WTMs can be further reduced by exploiting the dominance of line-of-sight (LoS) links. By employing these lower-dimensional WTMs as mapping functions, the active-sensing-based algorithm is executed in the wavenumber domain, resulting in an acceleration of convergence. Compared with the codebook-based beam alignment methods, the proposed method finds the optimal beam pair in a ping-pong fashion, thus avoiding high training overheads caused by beam sweeping. Finally, the numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Training AI models has always been challenging, especially when there is a need for custom models to provide personalized services. Algorithm engineers often face a lengthy process to iteratively develop models tailored to specific business requirements, making it even more difficult for non-experts. The quest for high-quality and efficient model development, along with the emergence of Large Language Model (LLM) Agents, has become a key focus in the industry. Leveraging the powerful analytical, planning, and decision-making capabilities of LLM, we propose a TrainerAgent system comprising a multi-agent framework including Task, Data, Model and Server agents. These agents analyze user-defined tasks, input data, and requirements (e.g., accuracy, speed), optimizing them comprehensively from both data and model perspectives to obtain satisfactory models, and finally deploy these models as online service. Experimental evaluations on classical discriminative and generative tasks in computer vision and natural language processing domains demonstrate that our system consistently produces models that meet the desired criteria. Furthermore, the system exhibits the ability to critically identify and reject unattainable tasks, such as fantastical scenarios or unethical requests, ensuring robustness and safety. This research presents a significant advancement in achieving desired models with increased efficiency and quality as compared to traditional model development, facilitated by the integration of LLM-powered analysis, decision-making, and execution capabilities, as well as the collaboration among four agents. We anticipate that our work will contribute to the advancement of research on TrainerAgent in both academic and industry communities, potentially establishing it as a new paradigm for model development in the field of AI.
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has been marked by the large language models exhibiting human-like intelligence. However, these models also present unprecedented challenges to energy consumption and environmental sustainability. One promising solution is to revisit analogue computing, a technique that predates digital computing and exploits emerging analogue electronic devices, such as resistive memory, which features in-memory computing, high scalability, and nonvolatility. However, analogue computing still faces the same challenges as before: programming nonidealities and expensive programming due to the underlying devices physics. Here, we report a universal solution, software-hardware co-design using structural plasticity-inspired edge pruning to optimize the topology of a randomly weighted analogue resistive memory neural network. Software-wise, the topology of a randomly weighted neural network is optimized by pruning connections rather than precisely tuning resistive memory weights. Hardware-wise, we reveal the physical origin of the programming stochasticity using transmission electron microscopy, which is leveraged for large-scale and low-cost implementation of an overparameterized random neural network containing high-performance sub-networks. We implemented the co-design on a 40nm 256K resistive memory macro, observing 17.3% and 19.9% accuracy improvements in image and audio classification on FashionMNIST and Spoken digits datasets, as well as 9.8% (2%) improvement in PR (ROC) in image segmentation on DRIVE datasets, respectively. This is accompanied by 82.1%, 51.2%, and 99.8% improvement in energy efficiency thanks to analogue in-memory computing. By embracing the intrinsic stochasticity and in-memory computing, this work may solve the biggest obstacle of analogue computing systems and thus unleash their immense potential for next-generation AI hardware.
The reconstruction of textureless areas has long been a challenging problem in MVS due to lack of reliable pixel correspondences between images. In this paper, we propose the Textureless-aware Segmentation And Correlative Refinement guided Multi-View Stereo (TSAR-MVS), a novel method that effectively tackles challenges posed by textureless areas in 3D reconstruction through filtering, refinement and segmentation. First, we implement joint hypothesis filtering, a technique that merges a confidence estimator with a disparity discontinuity detector to eliminate incorrect depth estimations. Second, to spread the pixels with confident depth, we introduce a iterative correlation refinement strategy that leverages RANSAC to generate superpixels, succeeded by a median filter for broadening the influence of accurately determined pixels.Finally, we present a textureless-aware segmentation method that leverages edge detection and line detection for accurately identify large textureless regions to be fitted using 3D planes. Experiments on extensive datasets demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms most non-learning methods and exhibits robustness to textureless areas while preserving fine details.
