Vast efforts have been devoted to creating high-performance few-shot learners, i.e., models that perform well with little training data. Training large-scale pretrained language models (PLMs) has incurred significant cost, but utilizing PLM-based few-shot learners is still challenging due to their enormous size. This work focuses on a crucial question: How to make effective use of these few-shot learners? We propose LMTurk, a novel approach that treats few-shot learners as crowdsourcing workers. The rationale is that crowdsourcing workers are in fact few-shot learners: They are shown a few illustrative examples to learn about a task and then start annotating. LMTurk employs few-shot learners built upon PLMs as workers. We show that the resulting annotations can be utilized to train models that solve the task well and are small enough to be deployable in practical scenarios. Altogether, LMTurk is an important step towards making effective use of current PLM-based few-shot learners.
Language-specific pre-trained models have proven to be more accurate than multilingual ones in a monolingual evaluation setting, Arabic is no exception. However, we found that previously released Arabic BERT models were significantly under-trained. In this technical report, we present JABER, Junior Arabic BERt, our pretrained language model prototype dedicated for Arabic. We conduct an empirical study to systematically evaluate the performance of models across a diverse set of existing Arabic NLU tasks. Experimental results show that JABER achieves the state-of-the-art performances on ALUE, a new benchmark for Arabic Language Understanding Evaluation, as well as on a well-established NER benchmark
End-to-end models are becoming popular approaches for mispronunciation detection and diagnosis (MDD). A streaming MDD framework which is demanded by many practical applications still remains a challenge. This paper proposes a streaming end-to-end MDD framework called CCA-MDD. CCA-MDD supports online processing and is able to run strictly in real-time. The encoder of CCA-MDD consists of a conv-Transformer network based streaming acoustic encoder and an improved cross-attention named coupled cross-attention (CCA). The coupled cross-attention integrates encoded acoustic features with pre-encoded linguistic features. An ensemble of decoders trained from multi-task learning is applied for final MDD decision. Experiments on publicly available corpora demonstrate that CCA-MDD achieves comparable performance to published offline end-to-end MDD models.
With the advances in deep learning, tremendous progress has been made with chit-chat dialogue systems and task-oriented dialogue systems. However, these two systems are often tackled separately in current methods. To achieve more natural interaction with humans, a dialogue agent needs to be capable of both chatting and accomplishing tasks. To this end, we propose a unified dialogue system (UniDS) with the two aforementioned skills. In particular, we design a unified dialogue data schema, compatible for both chit-chat and task-oriented dialogues, and we train UniDS with mixed dialogue data from a pretrained chit-chat dialogue model. Without adding extra parameters to SOTA baselines, UniDS can alternatively handle chit-chat and task-oriented dialogues in a unified framework. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed UniDS works comparably well as the pure chit-chat system, and it outperforms state-of-the-art task-oriented dialogue systems. More importantly, UniDS achieves better robustness as it is able to smoothly switch between two types of dialogues. These results demonstrate the feasibility and potential of building an one-for-all dialogue system.
As labeling cost for different modules in task-oriented dialog (ToD) systems is high, a major challenge in practice is to learn different tasks with the least amount of labeled data. Recently, prompting methods over pre-trained language models (PLMs) have shown promising results for few-shot learning in ToD. To better utilize the power of PLMs, this paper proposes Comprehensive Instruction (CINS) that exploits PLMs with extra task-specific instructions. We design a schema (definition, constraint, prompt) of instructions and their customized realizations for three important downstream tasks in ToD, i.e. intent classification, dialog state tracking, and natural language generation. A sequence-to-sequence model (T5) is adopted to solve these three tasks in a unified framework. Extensive experiments are conducted on these ToD tasks in realistic few-shot learning scenarios with small validation data. Empirical results demonstrate that the proposed CINS approach consistently improves techniques that finetune PLMs with raw input or short prompts.
With the rapid increase of multimedia data, a large body of literature has emerged to work on multimodal summarization, the majority of which target at refining salient information from textual and visual modalities to output a pictorial summary with the most relevant images. Existing methods mostly focus on either extractive or abstractive summarization and rely on qualified image captions to build image references. We are the first to propose a Unified framework for Multimodal Summarization grounding on BART, UniMS, that integrates extractive and abstractive objectives, as well as selecting the image output. Specially, we adopt knowledge distillation from a vision-language pretrained model to improve image selection, which avoids any requirement on the existence and quality of image captions. Besides, we introduce a visual guided decoder to better integrate textual and visual modalities in guiding abstractive text generation. Results show that our best model achieves a new state-of-the-art result on a large-scale benchmark dataset. The newly involved extractive objective as well as the knowledge distillation technique are proven to bring a noticeable improvement to the multimodal summarization task.

Code representation learning, which aims to encode the semantics of source code into distributed vectors, plays an important role in recent deep-learning-based models for code intelligence. Recently, many pre-trained language models for source code (e.g., CuBERT and CodeBERT) have been proposed to model the context of code and serve as a basis for downstream code intelligence tasks such as code search, code clone detection, and program translation. Current approaches typically consider the source code as a plain sequence of tokens, or inject the structure information (e.g., AST and data-flow) into the sequential model pre-training. To further explore the properties of programming languages, this paper proposes SynCoBERT, a syntax-guided multi-modal contrastive pre-training approach for better code representations. Specially, we design two novel pre-training objectives originating from the symbolic and syntactic properties of source code, i.e., Identifier Prediction (IP) and AST Edge Prediction (TEP), which are designed to predict identifiers, and edges between two nodes of AST, respectively. Meanwhile, to exploit the complementary information in semantically equivalent modalities (i.e., code, comment, AST) of the code, we propose a multi-modal contrastive learning strategy to maximize the mutual information among different modalities. Extensive experiments on four downstream tasks related to code intelligence show that SynCoBERT advances the state-of-the-art with the same pre-training corpus and model size.
Code pre-trained models have shown great success in various code-related tasks, such as code search, code clone detection, and code translation. Most existing code pre-trained models often treat a code snippet as a plain sequence of tokens. However, the inherent syntax and hierarchy that provide important structure and semantic information are ignored. The native derived sequence representations of them are insufficient. To this end, we propose CLSEBERT, a Contrastive Learning Framework for Syntax Enhanced Code Pre-Trained Model, to deal with various code intelligence tasks. In the pre-training stage, we consider the code syntax and hierarchy contained in the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) and leverage the Contrastive Learning (CL) to learn noise-invariant code representations. Besides the original masked language model (MLM) objective, we also introduce two novel pre-training objectives: (1) ``AST Node Edge Prediction (NEP)'' to predict edges between nodes in the abstract syntax tree; (2) ``Code Token Type Prediction (TTP)'' to predict the types of code tokens. Extensive experiments on four code intelligence tasks demonstrate the superior performance of CLSEBERT compared to state-of-the-art at the same pre-training corpus and parameter scale.
