Jointly processing information from multiple sensors is crucial to achieving accurate and robust perception for reliable autonomous driving systems. However, current 3D perception research follows a modality-specific paradigm, leading to additional computation overheads and inefficient collaboration between different sensor data. In this paper, we present an efficient multi-modal backbone for outdoor 3D perception named UniTR, which processes a variety of modalities with unified modeling and shared parameters. Unlike previous works, UniTR introduces a modality-agnostic transformer encoder to handle these view-discrepant sensor data for parallel modal-wise representation learning and automatic cross-modal interaction without additional fusion steps. More importantly, to make full use of these complementary sensor types, we present a novel multi-modal integration strategy by both considering semantic-abundant 2D perspective and geometry-aware 3D sparse neighborhood relations. UniTR is also a fundamentally task-agnostic backbone that naturally supports different 3D perception tasks. It sets a new state-of-the-art performance on the nuScenes benchmark, achieving +1.1 NDS higher for 3D object detection and +12.0 higher mIoU for BEV map segmentation with lower inference latency. Due to the scarcity of manually annotated data required for fine-grained video understanding, few-shot fine-grained (FS-FG) action recognition has gained significant attention, with the aim of classifying novel fine-grained action categories with only a few labeled instances. Despite the progress made in FS coarse-grained action recognition, current approaches encounter two challenges when dealing with the fine-grained action categories: the inability to capture subtle action details and the insufficiency of learning from limited data that exhibit high intra-class variance and inter-class similarity. To address these limitations, we propose M$^3$Net, a matching-based framework for FS-FG action recognition, which incorporates \textit{multi-view encoding}, \textit{multi-view matching}, and \textit{multi-view fusion} to facilitate embedding encoding, similarity matching, and decision making across multiple viewpoints. \textit{Multi-view encoding} captures rich contextual details from the intra-frame, intra-video, and intra-episode perspectives, generating customized higher-order embeddings for fine-grained data. \textit{Multi-view matching} integrates various matching functions enabling flexible relation modeling within limited samples to handle multi-scale spatio-temporal variations by leveraging the instance-specific, category-specific, and task-specific perspectives. \textit{Multi-view fusion} consists of matching-predictions fusion and matching-losses fusion over the above views, where the former promotes mutual complementarity and the latter enhances embedding generalizability by employing multi-task collaborative learning. Explainable visualizations and experimental results on three challenging benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of M$^3$Net in capturing fine-grained action details and achieving state-of-the-art performance for FS-FG action recognition.
In the last few years, Neural Painting (NP) techniques became capable of producing extremely realistic artworks. This paper advances the state of the art in this emerging research domain by proposing the first approach for Interactive NP. Considering a setting where a user looks at a scene and tries to reproduce it on a painting, our objective is to develop a computational framework to assist the users creativity by suggesting the next strokes to paint, that can be possibly used to complete the artwork. To accomplish such a task, we propose I-Paint, a novel method based on a conditional transformer Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) architecture with a two-stage decoder. To evaluate the proposed approach and stimulate research in this area, we also introduce two novel datasets. Our experiments show that our approach provides good stroke suggestions and compares favorably to the state of the art. We present Hybrid-CSR, a geometric deep-learning model that combines explicit and implicit shape representations for cortical surface reconstruction. Specifically, Hybrid-CSR begins with explicit deformations of template meshes to obtain coarsely reconstructed cortical surfaces, based on which the oriented point clouds are estimated for the subsequent differentiable poisson surface reconstruction. By doing so, our method unifies explicit (oriented point clouds) and implicit (indicator function) cortical surface reconstruction. Compared to explicit representation-based methods, our hybrid approach is more friendly to capture detailed structures, and when compared with implicit representation-based methods, our method can be topology aware because of end-to-end training with a mesh-based deformation module. In order to address topology defects, we propose a new topology correction pipeline that relies on optimization-based diffeomorphic surface registration. Experimental results on three brain datasets show that our approach surpasses existing implicit and explicit cortical surface reconstruction methods in numeric metrics in terms of accuracy, regularity, and consistency.
We propose a novel ECGAN for the challenging semantic image synthesis task. Although considerable improvements have been achieved by the community in the recent period, the quality of synthesized images is far from satisfactory due to three largely unresolved challenges. 1) The semantic labels do not provide detailed structural information, making it challenging to synthesize local details and structures; 2) The widely adopted CNN operations such as convolution, down-sampling, and normalization usually cause spatial resolution loss and thus cannot fully preserve the original semantic information, leading to semantically inconsistent results (e.g., missing small objects); 3) Existing semantic image synthesis methods focus on modeling 'local' semantic information from a single input semantic layout. However, they ignore 'global' semantic information of multiple input semantic layouts, i.e., semantic cross-relations between pixels across different input layouts. To tackle 1), we propose to use the edge as an intermediate representation which is further adopted to guide image generation via a proposed attention guided edge transfer module. To tackle 2), we design an effective module to selectively highlight class-dependent feature maps according to the original semantic layout to preserve the semantic information. To tackle 3), inspired by current methods in contrastive learning, we propose a novel contrastive learning method, which aims to enforce pixel embeddings belonging to the same semantic class to generate more similar image content than those from different classes. We further propose a novel multi-scale contrastive learning method that aims to push same-class features from different scales closer together being able to capture more semantic relations by explicitly exploring the structures of labeled pixels from multiple input semantic layouts from different scales.
Occlusion perturbation presents a significant challenge in person re-identification (re-ID), and existing methods that rely on external visual cues require additional computational resources and only consider the issue of missing information caused by occlusion. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework, termed Erasing, Transforming, and Noising Defense Network (ETNDNet), which treats occlusion as a noise disturbance and solves occluded person re-ID from the perspective of adversarial defense. In the proposed ETNDNet, we introduce three strategies: Firstly, we randomly erase the feature map to create an adversarial representation with incomplete information, enabling adversarial learning of identity loss to protect the re-ID system from the disturbance of missing information. Secondly, we introduce random transformations to simulate the position misalignment caused by occlusion, training the extractor and classifier adversarially to learn robust representations immune to misaligned information. Thirdly, we perturb the feature map with random values to address noisy information introduced by obstacles and non-target pedestrians, and employ adversarial gaming in the re-ID system to enhance its resistance to occlusion noise. Without bells and whistles, ETNDNet has three key highlights: (i) it does not require any external modules with parameters, (ii) it effectively handles various issues caused by occlusion from obstacles and non-target pedestrians, and (iii) it designs the first GAN-based adversarial defense paradigm for occluded person re-ID. Extensive experiments on five public datasets fully demonstrate the effectiveness, superiority, and practicality of the proposed ETNDNet. The existing contrastive learning methods widely adopt one-hot instance discrimination as pretext task for self-supervised learning, which inevitably neglects rich inter-instance similarities among natural images, then leading to potential representation degeneration. In this paper, we propose a novel image mix method, PatchMix, for contrastive learning in Vision Transformer (ViT), to model inter-instance similarities among images. Following the nature of ViT, we randomly mix multiple images from mini-batch in patch level to construct mixed image patch sequences for ViT. Compared to the existing sample mix methods, our PatchMix can flexibly and efficiently mix more than two images and simulate more complicated similarity relations among natural images. In this manner, our contrastive framework can significantly reduce the gap between contrastive objective and ground truth in reality. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art on both ImageNet-1K and CIFAR datasets, e.g., 3.0% linear accuracy improvement on ImageNet-1K and 8.7% kNN accuracy improvement on CIFAR100. Moreover, our method achieves the leading transfer performance on downstream tasks, object detection and instance segmentation on COCO dataset. Image restoration is a low-level visual task, and most CNN methods are designed as black boxes, lacking transparency and intrinsic aesthetics. Many unsupervised approaches ignore the degradation of visible information in low-light scenes, which will seriously affect the aggregation of complementary information and also make the fusion algorithm unable to produce satisfactory fusion results under extreme conditions. In this paper, we propose Enlighten-anything, which is able to enhance and fuse the semantic intent of SAM segmentation with low-light images to obtain fused images with good visual perception. The generalization ability of unsupervised learning is greatly improved, and experiments on LOL dataset are conducted to show that our method improves 3db in PSNR over baseline and 8 in SSIM. Zero-shot learning of SAM introduces a powerful aid for unsupervised low-light enhancement.
