Mining structured knowledge from tweets using named entity recognition (NER) can be beneficial for many downstream applications such as recommendation and intention under standing. With tweet posts tending to be multimodal, multimodal named entity recognition (MNER) has attracted more attention. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, which can dynamically align the image and text sequence and achieve the multi-level cross-modal learning to augment textual word representation for MNER improvement. To be specific, our framework can be split into three main stages: the first stage focuses on intra-modality representation learning to derive the implicit global and local knowledge of each modality, the second evaluates the relevance between the text and its accompanying image and integrates different grained visual information based on the relevance, the third enforces semantic refinement via iterative cross-modal interactions and co-attention. We conduct experiments on two open datasets, and the results and detailed analysis demonstrate the advantage of our model.
When autonomous vehicles are deployed on public roads, they will encounter countless and diverse driving situations. Many manually designed driving policies are difficult to scale to the real world. Fortunately, reinforcement learning has shown great success in many tasks by automatic trial and error. However, when it comes to autonomous driving in interactive dense traffic, RL agents either fail to learn reasonable performance or necessitate a large amount of data. Our insight is that when humans learn to drive, they will 1) make decisions over the high-level skill space instead of the low-level control space and 2) leverage expert prior knowledge rather than learning from scratch. Inspired by this, we propose ASAP-RL, an efficient reinforcement learning algorithm for autonomous driving that simultaneously leverages motion skills and expert priors. We first parameterized motion skills, which are diverse enough to cover various complex driving scenarios and situations. A skill parameter inverse recovery method is proposed to convert expert demonstrations from control space to skill space. A simple but effective double initialization technique is proposed to leverage expert priors while bypassing the issue of expert suboptimality and early performance degradation. We validate our proposed method on interactive dense-traffic driving tasks given simple and sparse rewards. Experimental results show that our method can lead to higher learning efficiency and better driving performance relative to previous methods that exploit skills and priors differently. Data valuation using Shapley value has emerged as a prevalent research domain in machine learning applications. However, it is a challenge to address the role of order in data cooperation as most research lacks such discussion. To tackle this problem, this paper studies the definition of the partial ordinal Shapley value by group theory in abstract algebra. Besides, since the calculation of the partial ordinal Shapley value requires exponential time, this paper also gives three algorithms for approximating the results. The Truncated Monte Carlo algorithm is derived from the classic Shapley value approximation algorithm. The Classification Monte Carlo algorithm and the Classification Truncated Monte Carlo algorithm are based on the fact that the data points in the same class provide similar information, then we can accelerate the calculation by leaving out some data points in each class.
As deep neural networks (DNNs) are being applied to a wide range of edge intelligent applications, it is critical for edge inference platforms to have both high-throughput and low-latency at the same time. Such edge platforms with multiple DNN models pose new challenges for scheduler designs. First, each request may have different service level objectives (SLOs) to improve quality of service (QoS). Second, the edge platforms should be able to efficiently schedule multiple heterogeneous DNN models so that system utilization can be improved. To meet these two goals, this paper proposes BCEdge, a novel learning-based scheduling framework that takes adaptive batching and concurrent execution of DNN inference services on edge platforms. We define a utility function to evaluate the trade-off between throughput and latency. The scheduler in BCEdge leverages maximum entropy-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to maximize utility by 1) co-optimizing batch size and 2) the number of concurrent models automatically. Our prototype implemented on different edge platforms shows that the proposed BCEdge enhances utility by up to 37.6% on average, compared to state-of-the-art solutions, while satisfying SLOs.
Imbalanced node classification widely exists in real-world networks where graph neural networks (GNNs) are usually highly inclined to majority classes and suffer from severe performance degradation on classifying minority class nodes. Various imbalanced node classification methods have been proposed recently which construct synthetic nodes and edges w.r.t. minority classes to balance the label and topology distribution. However, they are all based on the homophilic assumption that nodes of the same label tend to connect despite the wide existence of heterophilic edges in real-world graphs. Thus, they uniformly aggregate features from both homophilic and heterophilic neighbors and rely on feature similarity to generate synthetic edges, which cannot be applied to imbalanced graphs in high heterophily. To address this problem, we propose a novel GraphSANN for imbalanced node classification on both homophilic and heterophilic graphs. Firstly, we propose a unified feature mixer to generate synthetic nodes with both homophilic and heterophilic interpolation in a unified way. Next, by randomly sampling edges between synthetic nodes and existing nodes as candidate edges, we design an adaptive subgraph extractor to adaptively extract the contextual subgraphs of candidate edges with flexible ranges. Finally, we develop a multi-filter subgraph encoder that constructs different filter channels to discriminatively aggregate neighbor's information along the homophilic and heterophilic edges. Extensive experiments on eight datasets demonstrate the superiority of our model for imbalanced node classification on both homophilic and heterophilic graphs.
Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) aims to synthesize non-existent intermediate frames between existent frames. Flow-based VFI algorithms estimate intermediate motion fields to warp the existent frames. Real-world motions' complexity and the reference frame's absence make motion estimation challenging. Many state-of-the-art approaches explicitly model the correlations between two neighboring frames for more accurate motion estimation. In common approaches, the receptive field of correlation modeling at higher resolution depends on the motion fields estimated beforehand. Such receptive field dependency makes common motion estimation approaches poor at coping with small and fast-moving objects. To better model correlations and to produce more accurate motion fields, we propose the Densely Queried Bilateral Correlation (DQBC) that gets rid of the receptive field dependency problem and thus is more friendly to small and fast-moving objects. The motion fields generated with the help of DQBC are further refined and up-sampled with context features. After the motion fields are fixed, a CNN-based SynthNet synthesizes the final interpolated frame. Experiments show that our approach enjoys higher accuracy and less inference time than the state-of-the-art. Source code is available at https://github.com/kinoud/DQBC.
Click-based interactive segmentation enables productive pixel-level annotation and image editing with simple user clicks, whereas target ambiguity remains a problem hindering precise segmentation. That is, in scenes with rich context, one click may refer to multiple potential targets residing in corresponding masks, while most interactive segmentors can only generate one single mask and fail to capture the rich context. To resolve target ambiguity, we here propose PiClick to produce semantically diversified masks. PiClick leverages a transformer network design wherein mutually interactive mask queries are integrated to infuse target priors. Moreover, a Target Reasoning Module is designed in PiClick to automatically imply the best-matched mask from all proposals, significantly relieving target ambiguity as well as extra human intervention. Extensive experiments conducted on all 9 interactive segmentation datasets not only demonstrate the state-of-the-art segmentation performance of PiClick, but also reduces human interventions with multiple proposal generation and target reasoning. The drastic variation of motion in spatial and temporal dimensions makes the video prediction task extremely challenging. Existing RNN models obtain higher performance by deepening or widening the model. They obtain the multi-scale features of the video only by stacking layers, which is inefficient and brings unbearable training costs (such as memory, FLOPs, and training time). Different from them, this paper proposes a spatiotemporal multi-scale model called MS-LSTM wholly from a multi-scale perspective. On the basis of stacked layers, MS-LSTM incorporates two additional efficient multi-scale designs to fully capture spatiotemporal context information. Concretely, we employ LSTMs with mirrored pyramid structures to construct spatial multi-scale representations and LSTMs with different convolution kernels to construct temporal multi-scale representations. Detailed comparison experiments with eight baseline models on four video datasets show that MS-LSTM has better performance but lower training costs.
This paper proposes a special-purpose system to achieve high-accuracy and high-efficiency machine learning (ML) molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. The system consists of field programmable gate array (FPGA) and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) working in heterogeneous parallelization. To be specific, a multiplication-less neural network (NN) is deployed on the non-von Neumann (NvN)-based ASIC (SilTerra 180 nm process) to evaluate atomic forces, which is the most computationally expensive part of MD. All other calculations of MD are done using FPGA (Xilinx XC7Z100). It is shown that, to achieve similar-level accuracy, the proposed NvN-based system based on low-end fabrication technologies (180 nm) is 1.6x faster and 10^2-10^3x more energy efficiency than state-of-the-art vN based MLMD using graphics processing units (GPUs) based on much more advanced technologies (12 nm), indicating superiority of the proposed NvN-based heterogeneous parallel architecture.
