Dual-view Snapshot Compressive Imaging via Optical Flow Aided Recurrent Neural Network

Dual-view snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) aims to capture videos from two field-of-views (FoVs) using a 2D sensor (detector) in a single snapshot, achieving joint FoV and temporal compressive sensing, and thus enjoying the advantages of low-bandwidth, low-power, and low-cost. However, it is challenging for existing model-based decoding algorithms to reconstruct each individual scene, which usually require exhaustive parameter tuning with extremely long running time for large scale data. In this paper, we propose an optical flow-aided recurrent neural network for dual video SCI systems, which provides high-quality decoding in seconds. Firstly, we develop a diversity amplification method to enlarge the differences between scenes of two FoVs, and design a deep convolutional neural network with dual branches to separate different scenes from the single measurement. Secondly, we integrate the bidirectional optical flow extracted from adjacent frames with the recurrent neural network to jointly reconstruct each video in a sequential manner. Extensive results on both simulation and real data demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed model in a short inference time. Physical Adversarial Attacks on an Aerial Imagery Object Detector

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have become essential for processing the vast amounts of aerial imagery collected using earth-observing satellite platforms. However, DNNs are vulnerable towards adversarial examples, and it is expected that this weakness also plagues DNNs for aerial imagery. In this work, we demonstrate one of the first efforts on physical adversarial attacks on aerial imagery, whereby adversarial patches were optimised, fabricated and installed on or near target objects (cars) to significantly reduce the efficacy of an object detector applied on overhead images. Physical adversarial attacks on aerial images, particularly those captured from satellite platforms, are challenged by atmospheric factors (lighting, weather, seasons) and the distance between the observer and target. To investigate the effects of these challenges, we devised novel experiments and metrics to evaluate the efficacy of physical adversarial attacks against object detectors in aerial scenes. Our results indicate the palpable threat posed by physical adversarial attacks towards DNNs for processing satellite imagery.

GCCAD: Graph Contrastive Coding for Anomaly Detection

Graph-based anomaly detection has been widely used for detecting malicious activities in real-world applications. Existing attempts to address this problem have thus far focused on structural feature engineering or learning in the binary classification regime. In this work, we propose to leverage graph contrastive coding and present the supervised GCCAD model for contrasting abnormal nodes with normal ones in terms of their distances to the global context (e.g., the average of all nodes). To handle scenarios with scarce labels, we further enable GCCAD as a self-supervised framework by designing a graph corrupting strategy for generating synthetic node labels. To achieve the contrastive objective, we design a graph neural network encoder that can infer and further remove suspicious links during message passing, as well as learn the global context of the input graph. We conduct extensive experiments on four public datasets, demonstrating that 1) GCCAD significantly and consistently outperforms various advanced baselines and 2) its self-supervised version without fine-tuning can achieve comparable performance with its fully supervised version.

Bridging the Gap between Language Model and Reading Comprehension: Unsupervised MRC via Self-Supervision

Despite recent success in machine reading comprehension (MRC), learning high-quality MRC models still requires large-scale labeled training data, even using strong pre-trained language models (PLMs). The pre-training tasks for PLMs are not question-answering or MRC-based tasks, making existing PLMs unable to be directly used for unsupervised MRC. Specifically, MRC aims to spot an accurate answer span from the given document, but PLMs focus on token filling in sentences. In this paper, we propose a new framework for unsupervised MRC. Firstly, we propose to learn to spot answer spans in documents via self-supervised learning, by designing a self-supervision pretext task for MRC - Spotting-MLM. Solving this task requires capturing deep interactions between sentences in documents. Secondly, we apply a simple sentence rewriting strategy in the inference stage to alleviate the expression mismatch between questions and documents. Experiments show that our method achieves a new state-of-the-art performance for unsupervised MRC.

Sawtooth Factorial Topic Embeddings Guided Gamma Belief Network

Hierarchical topic models such as the gamma belief network (GBN) have delivered promising results in mining multi-layer document representations and discovering interpretable topic taxonomies. However, they often assume in the prior that the topics at each layer are independently drawn from the Dirichlet distribution, ignoring the dependencies between the topics both at the same layer and across different layers. To relax this assumption, we propose sawtooth factorial topic embedding guided GBN, a deep generative model of documents that captures the dependencies and semantic similarities between the topics in the embedding space. Specifically, both the words and topics are represented as embedding vectors of the same dimension. The topic matrix at a layer is factorized into the product of a factor loading matrix and a topic embedding matrix, the transpose of which is set as the factor loading matrix of the layer above. Repeating this particular type of factorization, which shares components between adjacent layers, leads to a structure referred to as sawtooth factorization. An auto-encoding variational inference network is constructed to optimize the model parameter via stochastic gradient descent. Experiments on big corpora show that our models outperform other neural topic models on extracting deeper interpretable topics and deriving better document representations.

A Spacecraft Dataset for Detection, Segmentation and Parts Recognition

Virtually all aspects of modern life depend on space technology. Thanks to the great advancement of computer vision in general and deep learning-based techniques in particular, over the decades, the world witnessed the growing use of deep learning in solving problems for space applications, such as self-driving robot, tracers, insect-like robot on cosmos and health monitoring of spacecraft. These are just some prominent examples that has advanced space industry with the help of deep learning. However, the success of deep learning models requires a lot of training data in order to have decent performance, while on the other hand, there are very limited amount of publicly available space datasets for the training of deep learning models. Currently, there is no public datasets for space-based object detection or instance segmentation, partly because manually annotating object segmentation masks is very time consuming as they require pixel-level labelling, not to mention the challenge of obtaining images from space. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by releasing a dataset for spacecraft detection, instance segmentation and part recognition. The main contribution of this work is the development of the dataset using images of space stations and satellites, with rich annotations including bounding boxes of spacecrafts and masks to the level of object parts, which are obtained with a mixture of automatic processes and manual efforts. We also provide evaluations with state-of-the-art methods in object detection and instance segmentation as a benchmark for the dataset. From Paraphrasing to Semantic Parsing: Unsupervised Semantic Parsing via Synchronous Semantic Decoding

Semantic parsing is challenging due to the structure gap and the semantic gap between utterances and logical forms. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised semantic parsing method - Synchronous Semantic Decoding (SSD), which can simultaneously resolve the semantic gap and the structure gap by jointly leveraging paraphrasing and grammar constrained decoding. Specifically, we reformulate semantic parsing as a constrained paraphrasing problem: given an utterance, our model synchronously generates its canonical utterance and meaning representation. During synchronous decoding: the utterance paraphrasing is constrained by the structure of the logical form, therefore the canonical utterance can be paraphrased controlledly; the semantic decoding is guided by the semantics of the canonical utterance, therefore its logical form can be generated unsupervisedly. Experimental results show that SSD is a promising approach and can achieve competitive unsupervised semantic parsing performance on multiple datasets.

Bayesian Attention Belief Networks

Attention-based neural networks have achieved state-of-the-art results on a wide range of tasks. Most such models use deterministic attention while stochastic attention is less explored due to the optimization difficulties or complicated model design. This paper introduces Bayesian attention belief networks, which construct a decoder network by modeling unnormalized attention weights with a hierarchy of gamma distributions, and an encoder network by stacking Weibull distributions with a deterministic-upward-stochastic-downward structure to approximate the posterior. The resulting auto-encoding networks can be optimized in a differentiable way with a variational lower bound. It is simple to convert any models with deterministic attention, including pretrained ones, to the proposed Bayesian attention belief networks. On a variety of language understanding tasks, we show that our method outperforms deterministic attention and state-of-the-art stochastic attention in accuracy, uncertainty estimation, generalization across domains, and robustness to adversarial attacks. We further demonstrate the general applicability of our method on neural machine translation and visual question answering, showing great potential of incorporating our method into various attention-related tasks.

Matching Visual Features to Hierarchical Semantic Topics for Image Paragraph Captioning

Observing a set of images and their corresponding paragraph-captions, a challenging task is to learn how to produce a semantically coherent paragraph to describe the visual content of an image. Inspired by recent successes in integrating semantic topics into this task, this paper develops a plug-and-play hierarchical-topic-guided image paragraph generation framework, which couples a visual extractor with a deep topic model to guide the learning of a language model. To capture the correlations between the image and text at multiple levels of abstraction and learn the semantic topics from images, we design a variational inference network to build the mapping from image features to textual captions. To guide the paragraph generation, the learned hierarchical topics and visual features are integrated into the language model, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Transformer, and jointly optimized. Experiments on public dataset demonstrate that the proposed models, which are competitive with many state-of-the-art approaches in terms of standard evaluation metrics, can be used to both distill interpretable multi-layer topics and generate diverse and coherent captions.

Wide-Beam Array Antenna Power Gain Maximization via ADMM Framework

This paper proposes two algorithms to maximize the minimum array power gain in a wide-beam mainlobe by solving the power gain pattern synthesis (PGPS) problem with and without sidelobe constraints. Firstly, the nonconvex PGPS problem is transformed into a nonconvex linear inequality optimization problem and then converted to an augmented Lagrangian problem by introducing auxiliary variables via the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) framework. Next,the original intractable problem is converted into a series of nonconvex and convex subproblems. The nonconvex subproblems are solved by dividing their solution space into a finite set of smaller ones, in which the solution would be obtained pseudoanalytically. In such a way, the proposed algorithms are superior to the existing PGPS-based ones as their convergence can be theoretically guaranteed with a lower computational burden. Numerical examples with both isotropic element pattern (IEP) and active element pattern (AEP) arrays are simulated to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithms by comparing with the related existing algorithms.
