Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has been visioned as a key technique for B5G/6G networks. To support monostatic sensing, a full-duplex radio is indispensable to extract echo signals from targets. Such a radio can also greatly improve network capacity via full-duplex communications. However, full-duplex radios in existing ISAC designs are mainly focused on wireless sensing, while the ability of full-duplex communications is usually ignored. In this article, we provide an overview of full-duplex ISAC (FD-ISAC), where a full-duplex radio is used for both wireless sensing and full-duplex communications in B5G/6G networks, with a focus on the fundamental interference management problem in such networks. First, different ISAC architectures are introduced, considering different full-duplex communication modes and wireless sensing modes. Next, the challenging issues of link-level interference and network-level interference are analyzed, illustrating a critical demand on interference management for FD-ISAC. Potential solutions to interference management are then reviewed from the perspective of radio architecture design, beamforming, mode selection, and resource allocation. The corresponding open problems are also highlighted.
Text-to-image diffusion models produce high quality images but do not offer control over individual instances in the image. We introduce InstanceDiffusion that adds precise instance-level control to text-to-image diffusion models. InstanceDiffusion supports free-form language conditions per instance and allows flexible ways to specify instance locations such as simple single points, scribbles, bounding boxes or intricate instance segmentation masks, and combinations thereof. We propose three major changes to text-to-image models that enable precise instance-level control. Our UniFusion block enables instance-level conditions for text-to-image models, the ScaleU block improves image fidelity, and our Multi-instance Sampler improves generations for multiple instances. InstanceDiffusion significantly surpasses specialized state-of-the-art models for each location condition. Notably, on the COCO dataset, we outperform previous state-of-the-art by 20.4% AP$_{50}^\text{box}$ for box inputs, and 25.4% IoU for mask inputs.
In this work, we re-examine inter-patch dependencies in the decoding mechanism of masked autoencoders (MAE). We decompose this decoding mechanism for masked patch reconstruction in MAE into self-attention and cross-attention. Our investigations suggest that self-attention between mask patches is not essential for learning good representations. To this end, we propose a novel pretraining framework: Cross-Attention Masked Autoencoders (CrossMAE). CrossMAE's decoder leverages only cross-attention between masked and visible tokens, with no degradation in downstream performance. This design also enables decoding only a small subset of mask tokens, boosting efficiency. Furthermore, each decoder block can now leverage different encoder features, resulting in improved representation learning. CrossMAE matches MAE in performance with 2.5 to 3.7$\times$ less decoding compute. It also surpasses MAE on ImageNet classification and COCO instance segmentation under the same compute. Several unsupervised image segmentation approaches have been proposed which eliminate the need for dense manually-annotated segmentation masks; current models separately handle either semantic segmentation (e.g., STEGO) or class-agnostic instance segmentation (e.g., CutLER), but not both (i.e., panoptic segmentation). We propose an Unsupervised Universal Segmentation model (U2Seg) adept at performing various image segmentation tasks -- instance, semantic and panoptic -- using a novel unified framework. U2Seg generates pseudo semantic labels for these segmentation tasks via leveraging self-supervised models followed by clustering; each cluster represents different semantic and/or instance membership of pixels. We then self-train the model on these pseudo semantic labels, yielding substantial performance gains over specialized methods tailored to each task: a +2.6 AP$^{\text{box}}$ boost vs. CutLER in unsupervised instance segmentation on COCO and a +7.0 PixelAcc increase (vs. STEGO) in unsupervised semantic segmentation on COCOStuff. Moreover, our method sets up a new baseline for unsupervised panoptic segmentation, which has not been previously explored. U2Seg is also a strong pretrained model for few-shot segmentation, surpassing CutLER by +5.0 AP$^{\text{mask}}$ when trained on a low-data regime, e.g., only 1% COCO labels. We hope our simple yet effective method can inspire more research on unsupervised universal image segmentation.
Deep learning has had remarkable success at analyzing handheld imagery such as consumer photos due to the availability of large-scale human annotations (e.g., ImageNet). However, remote sensing data lacks such extensive annotation and thus potential for supervised learning. To address this, we propose a highly effective semi-supervised approach tailored specifically to remote sensing data. Our approach encompasses two key contributions. First, we adapt the FixMatch framework to remote sensing data by designing robust strong and weak augmentations suitable for this domain. Second, we develop an effective semi-supervised learning method by removing bias in imbalanced training data resulting from both actual labels and pseudo-labels predicted by the model. Our simple semi-supervised framework was validated by extensive experimentation. Using 30\% of labeled annotations, it delivers a 7.1\% accuracy gain over the supervised learning baseline and a 2.1\% gain over the supervised state-of-the-art CDS method on the remote sensing xView dataset.
Current open-source Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) excel at tasks such as open-vocabulary language grounding and segmentation but can suffer under false premises when queries imply the existence of something that is not actually present in the image. We observe that existing methods that fine-tune an LMM to segment images significantly degrade their ability to reliably determine ("see") if an object is present and to interact naturally with humans ("say"), a form of catastrophic forgetting. In this work, we propose a cascading and joint training approach for LMMs to solve this task, avoiding catastrophic forgetting of previous skills. Our resulting model can "see" by detecting whether objects are present in an image, "say" by telling the user if they are not, proposing alternative queries or correcting semantic errors in the query, and finally "segment" by outputting the mask of the desired objects if they exist. Additionally, we introduce a novel False Premise Correction benchmark dataset, an extension of existing RefCOCO(+/g) referring segmentation datasets (which we call FP-RefCOCO(+/g)). The results show that our method not only detects false premises up to 55% better than existing approaches, but under false premise conditions produces relative cIOU improvements of more than 31% over baselines, and produces natural language feedback judged helpful up to 67% of the time.
Image compositing plays a vital role in photo editing. After inserting a foreground object into another background image, the composite image may look unnatural and inharmonious. When the foreground is photorealistic and the background is an artistic painting, painterly image harmonization aims to transfer the style of background painting to the foreground object, which is a challenging task due to the large domain gap between foreground and background. In this work, we employ adversarial learning to bridge the domain gap between foreground feature map and background feature map. Specifically, we design a dual-encoder generator, in which the residual encoder produces the residual features added to the foreground feature map from main encoder. Then, a pixel-wise discriminator plays against the generator, encouraging the refined foreground feature map to be indistinguishable from background feature map. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method could achieve more harmonious and visually appealing results than previous methods.
Supporting ultra-high data rates and flexible reconfigurability, Terahertz (THz) mesh networks are attractive for next-generation wireless backhaul systems that empower the integrated access and backhaul (IAB). In THz mesh backhaul networks, the efficient cross-layer routing and long-term resource allocation is yet an open problem due to dynamic traffic demands as well as possible link failures caused by the high directivity and high non-line-of-sight (NLoS) path loss of THz spectrum. In addition, unpredictable data traffic and the mixed integer programming property with the NP-hard nature further challenge the effective routing and long-term resource allocation design. In this paper, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based cross-layer design in THz mesh backhaul networks (DEFLECT) is proposed, by considering dynamic traffic demands and possible sudden link failures. In DEFLECT, a heuristic routing metric is first devised to facilitate resource efficiency (RE) enhancement regarding energy and sub-array usages. Furthermore, a DRL based resource allocation algorithm is developed to realize long-term RE maximization and fast recovery from broken links. Specifically in the DRL method, the exploited multi-task structure cooperatively benefits joint power and sub-array allocation. Additionally, the leveraged hierarchical architecture realizes tailored resource allocation for each base station and learned knowledge transfer for fast recovery. Simulation results show that DEFLECT routing consumes less resource, compared to the minimal hop-count metric. Moreover, unlike conventional DRL methods causing packet loss and second-level latency, DEFLECT DRL realizes the long-term RE maximization with no packet loss and millisecond-level latency, and recovers resource-efficient backhaul from broken links within 1s.
Existing approaches to unsupervised video instance segmentation typically rely on motion estimates and experience difficulties tracking small or divergent motions. We present VideoCutLER, a simple method for unsupervised multi-instance video segmentation without using motion-based learning signals like optical flow or training on natural videos. Our key insight is that using high-quality pseudo masks and a simple video synthesis method for model training is surprisingly sufficient to enable the resulting video model to effectively segment and track multiple instances across video frames. We show the first competitive unsupervised learning results on the challenging YouTubeVIS-2019 benchmark, achieving 50.7% APvideo^50 , surpassing the previous state-of-the-art by a large margin. VideoCutLER can also serve as a strong pretrained model for supervised video instance segmentation tasks, exceeding DINO by 15.9% on YouTubeVIS-2019 in terms of APvideo.
Open-vocabulary image segmentation aims to partition an image into semantic regions according to arbitrary text descriptions. However, complex visual scenes can be naturally decomposed into simpler parts and abstracted at multiple levels of granularity, introducing inherent segmentation ambiguity. Unlike existing methods that typically sidestep this ambiguity and treat it as an external factor, our approach actively incorporates a hierarchical representation encompassing different semantic-levels into the learning process. We propose a decoupled text-image fusion mechanism and representation learning modules for both "things" and "stuff".1 Additionally, we systematically examine the differences that exist in the textual and visual features between these types of categories. Our resulting model, named HIPIE, tackles HIerarchical, oPen-vocabulary, and unIvErsal segmentation tasks within a unified framework. Benchmarked on over 40 datasets, e.g., ADE20K, COCO, Pascal-VOC Part, RefCOCO/RefCOCOg, ODinW and SeginW, HIPIE achieves the state-of-the-art results at various levels of image comprehension, including semantic-level (e.g., semantic segmentation), instance-level (e.g., panoptic/referring segmentation and object detection), as well as part-level (e.g., part/subpart segmentation) tasks.
