Abstract:The bokeh effect is an artistic technique that blurs out-of-focus areas in a photograph and has gained interest due to recent developments in text-to-image synthesis and the ubiquity of smart-phone cameras and photo-sharing apps. Prior work on rendering bokeh effects have focused on post hoc image manipulation to produce similar blurring effects in existing photographs using classical computer graphics or neural rendering techniques, but have either depth discontinuity artifacts or are restricted to reproducing bokeh effects that are present in the training data. More recent diffusion based models can synthesize images with an artistic style, but either require the generation of high-dimensional masks, expensive fine-tuning, or affect global image characteristics. In this paper, we present GBSD, the first generative text-to-image model that synthesizes photorealistic images with a bokeh style. Motivated by how image synthesis occurs progressively in diffusion models, our approach combines latent diffusion models with a 2-stage conditioning algorithm to render bokeh effects on semantically defined objects. Since we can focus the effect on objects, this semantic bokeh effect is more versatile than classical rendering techniques. We evaluate GBSD both quantitatively and qualitatively and demonstrate its ability to be applied in both text-to-image and image-to-image settings.




Abstract:Much research has been done on user-generated textual passwords. Surprisingly, semantic information in such passwords remain underinvestigated, with passwords created by English- and/or Chinese-speaking users being more studied with limited semantics. This paper fills this gap by proposing a general framework based on semantically enhanced PCFG (probabilistic context-free grammars) named SE#PCFG. It allowed us to consider 43 types of semantic information, the richest set considered so far, for semantic password analysis. Applying SE#PCFG to 17 large leaked password databases of user speaking four languages (English, Chinese, German and French), we demonstrate its usefulness and report a wide range of new insights about password semantics at different levels such as cross-website password correlations. Furthermore, based on SE#PCFG and a new systematic smoothing method, we proposed the Semantically Enhanced Password Cracking Architecture (SEPCA). To compare the performance of SEPCA against three state-of-the-art (SOTA) benchmarks in terms of the password coverage rate: two other PCFG variants and FLA. Our experimental results showed that SEPCA outperformed all the three benchmarks consistently and significantly across 52 test cases, by up to 21.53%, 52.55% and 7.86%, respectively, at the user level (with duplicate passwords). At the level of unique passwords, SEPCA also beats the three benchmarks by up to 33.32%, 86.19% and 10.46%, respectively. The results demonstrated the power of SEPCA as a new password cracking framework.
Abstract:The captivating realm of Minecraft has attracted substantial research interest in recent years, serving as a rich platform for developing intelligent agents capable of functioning in open-world environments. However, the current research landscape predominantly focuses on specific objectives, such as the popular "ObtainDiamond" task, and has not yet shown effective generalization to a broader spectrum of tasks. Furthermore, the current leading success rate for the "ObtainDiamond" task stands at around 20%, highlighting the limitations of Reinforcement Learning (RL) based controllers used in existing methods. To tackle these challenges, we introduce Ghost in the Minecraft (GITM), a novel framework integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) with text-based knowledge and memory, aiming to create Generally Capable Agents (GCAs) in Minecraft. These agents, equipped with the logic and common sense capabilities of LLMs, can skillfully navigate complex, sparse-reward environments with text-based interactions. We develop a set of structured actions and leverage LLMs to generate action plans for the agents to execute. The resulting LLM-based agent markedly surpasses previous methods, achieving a remarkable improvement of +47.5% in success rate on the "ObtainDiamond" task, demonstrating superior robustness compared to traditional RL-based controllers. Notably, our agent is the first to procure all items in the Minecraft Overworld technology tree, demonstrating its extensive capabilities. GITM does not need any GPU for training, but a single CPU node with 32 CPU cores is enough. This research shows the potential of LLMs in developing capable agents for handling long-horizon, complex tasks and adapting to uncertainties in open-world environments. Abstract:Clothing segmentation and fine-grained attribute recognition are challenging tasks at the crossing of computer vision and fashion, which segment the entire ensemble clothing instances as well as recognize detailed attributes of the clothing products from any input human images. Many new models have been developed for the tasks in recent years, nevertheless the segmentation accuracy is less than satisfactory in case of layered clothing or fashion products in different scales. In this paper, a new DEtection TRansformer (DETR) based method is proposed to segment and recognize fine-grained attributes of ensemble clothing instances with high accuracy. In this model, we propose a \textbf{multi-layered attention module} by aggregating features of different scales, determining the various scale components of a single instance, and merging them together. We train our model on the Fashionpedia dataset and demonstrate our method surpasses SOTA models in tasks of layered clothing segmentation and fine-grained attribute recognition.




Abstract:Distilling the structured information captured in feature maps has contributed to improved results for object detection tasks, but requires careful selection of baseline architectures and substantial pre-training. Self-distillation addresses these limitations and has recently achieved state-of-the-art performance for object detection despite making several simplifying architectural assumptions. Building on this work, we propose Smooth and Stepwise Self-Distillation (SSSD) for object detection. Our SSSD architecture forms an implicit teacher from object labels and a feature pyramid network backbone to distill label-annotated feature maps using Jensen-Shannon distance, which is smoother than distillation losses used in prior work. We additionally add a distillation coefficient that is adaptively configured based on the learning rate. We extensively benchmark SSSD against a baseline and two state-of-the-art object detector architectures on the COCO dataset by varying the coefficients and backbone and detector networks. We demonstrate that SSSD achieves higher average precision in most experimental settings, is robust to a wide range of coefficients, and benefits from our stepwise distillation procedure.
Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increased popularity in image and speech generation using diffusion models. However, directly generating music waveforms from free-form text prompts is still under-explored. In this paper, we propose the first text-to-waveform music generation model that can receive arbitrary texts using diffusion models. We incorporate the free-form textual prompt as the condition to guide the waveform generation process of diffusion models. To solve the problem of lacking such text-music parallel data, we collect a dataset of text-music pairs from the Internet with weak supervision. Besides, we compare the effect of two prompt formats of conditioning texts (music tags and free-form texts) and prove the superior performance of our method in terms of text-music relevance. We further demonstrate that our generated music in the waveform domain outperforms previous works by a large margin in terms of diversity, quality, and text-music relevance.




Abstract:Task-agnostic knowledge distillation attempts to address the problem of deploying large pretrained language model in resource-constrained scenarios by compressing a large pretrained model called teacher into a smaller one called student such that the student can be directly finetuned on downstream tasks and retains comparable performance. However, we empirically find that there is a generalization gap between the student and the teacher in existing methods. In this work, we show that we can leverage multi-task learning in task-agnostic distillation to advance the generalization of the resulted student. In particular, we propose Multi-task Infused Task-agnostic Knowledge Distillation (MITKD). We first enhance the teacher by multi-task training it on multiple downstream tasks and then perform distillation to produce the student. Experimental results demonstrate that our method yields a student with much better generalization, significantly outperforms existing baselines, and establishes a new state-of-the-art result on in-domain, out-domain, and low-resource datasets in the setting of task-agnostic distillation. Moreover, our method even exceeds an 8x larger BERT$_{\text{Base}}$ on SQuAD and four GLUE tasks. In addition, by combining ERNIE 3.0, our method achieves state-of-the-art results on 10 Chinese datasets.
Abstract:Automatic colorization of anime line drawing has attracted much attention in recent years since it can substantially benefit the animation industry. User-hint based methods are the mainstream approach for line drawing colorization, while reference-based methods offer a more intuitive approach. Nevertheless, although reference-based methods can improve feature aggregation of the reference image and the line drawing, the colorization results are not compelling in terms of color consistency or semantic correspondence. In this paper, we introduce an attention-based model for anime line drawing colorization, in which a channel-wise and spatial-wise Convolutional Attention module is used to improve the ability of the encoder for feature extraction and key area perception, and a Stop-Gradient Attention module with cross-attention and self-attention is used to tackle the cross-domain long-range dependency problem. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms other SOTA methods, with more accurate line structure and semantic color information.




Abstract:Software engineers working with the same programming language (PL) may speak different natural languages (NLs) and vice versa, erecting huge barriers to communication and working efficiency. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of generative pre-training in computer programs, yet they are always English-centric. In this work, we step towards bridging the gap between multilingual NLs and multilingual PLs for large language models (LLMs). We release ERNIE-Code, a unified pre-trained language model for 116 NLs and 6 PLs. We employ two methods for universal cross-lingual pre-training: span-corruption language modeling that learns patterns from monolingual NL or PL; and pivot-based translation language modeling that relies on parallel data of many NLs and PLs. Extensive results show that ERNIE-Code outperforms previous multilingual LLMs for PL or NL across a wide range of end tasks of code intelligence, including multilingual code-to-text, text-to-code, code-to-code, and text-to-text generation. We further show its advantage of zero-shot prompting on multilingual code summarization and text-to-text translation. We will make our code and pre-trained models publicly available.
Abstract:We present a novel bird's-eye-view (BEV) detector with perspective supervision, which converges faster and better suits modern image backbones. Existing state-of-the-art BEV detectors are often tied to certain depth pre-trained backbones like VoVNet, hindering the synergy between booming image backbones and BEV detectors. To address this limitation, we prioritize easing the optimization of BEV detectors by introducing perspective space supervision. To this end, we propose a two-stage BEV detector, where proposals from the perspective head are fed into the bird's-eye-view head for final predictions. To evaluate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct extensive ablation studies focusing on the form of supervision and the generality of the proposed detector. The proposed method is verified with a wide spectrum of traditional and modern image backbones and achieves new SoTA results on the large-scale nuScenes dataset. The code shall be released soon.
