A Survey on Evaluation of Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are gaining increasing popularity in both academia and industry, owing to their unprecedented performance in various applications. As LLMs continue to play a vital role in both research and daily use, their evaluation becomes increasingly critical, not only at the task level, but also at the society level for better understanding of their potential risks. Over the past years, significant efforts have been made to examine LLMs from various perspectives. This paper presents a comprehensive review of these evaluation methods for LLMs, focusing on three key dimensions: what to evaluate, where to evaluate, and how to evaluate. Firstly, we provide an overview from the perspective of evaluation tasks, encompassing general natural language processing tasks, reasoning, medical usage, ethics, educations, natural and social sciences, agent applications, and other areas. Secondly, we answer the `where' and `how' questions by diving into the evaluation methods and benchmarks, which serve as crucial components in assessing performance of LLMs. Then, we summarize the success and failure cases of LLMs in different tasks. Finally, we shed light on several future challenges that lie ahead in LLMs evaluation. Our aim is to offer invaluable insights to researchers in the realm of LLMs evaluation, thereby aiding the development of more proficient LLMs. Our key point is that evaluation should be treated as an essential discipline to better assist the development of LLMs. We consistently maintain the related open-source materials at: https://github.com/MLGroupJLU/LLM-eval-survey.

CSCLog: A Component Subsequence Correlation-Aware Log Anomaly Detection Method

Anomaly detection based on system logs plays an important role in intelligent operations, which is a challenging task due to the extremely complex log patterns. Existing methods detect anomalies by capturing the sequential dependencies in log sequences, which ignore the interactions of subsequences. To this end, we propose CSCLog, a Component Subsequence Correlation-Aware Log anomaly detection method, which not only captures the sequential dependencies in subsequences, but also models the implicit correlations of subsequences. Specifically, subsequences are extracted from log sequences based on components and the sequential dependencies in subsequences are captured by Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs). An implicit correlation encoder is introduced to model the implicit correlations of subsequences adaptively. In addition, Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs) are employed to accomplish the information interactions of subsequences. Finally, attention mechanisms are exploited to fuse the embeddings of all subsequences. Extensive experiments on four publicly available log datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of CSCLog, outperforming the best baseline by an average of 7.41% in Macro F1-Measure.

Automated 3D Pre-Training for Molecular Property Prediction

Molecular property prediction is an important problem in drug discovery and materials science. As geometric structures have been demonstrated necessary for molecular property prediction, 3D information has been combined with various graph learning methods to boost prediction performance. However, obtaining the geometric structure of molecules is not feasible in many real-world applications due to the high computational cost. In this work, we propose a novel 3D pre-training framework (dubbed 3D PGT), which pre-trains a model on 3D molecular graphs, and then fine-tunes it on molecular graphs without 3D structures. Based on fact that bond length, bond angle, and dihedral angle are three basic geometric descriptors corresponding to a complete molecular 3D conformer, we first develop a multi-task generative pre-train framework based on these three attributes. Next, to automatically fuse these three generative tasks, we design a surrogate metric using the \textit{total energy} to search for weight distribution of the three pretext task since total energy corresponding to the quality of 3D conformer.Extensive experiments on 2D molecular graphs are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and generalization ability of the proposed 3D PGT compared to various pre-training baselines.

Research on an improved Conformer end-to-end Speech Recognition Model with R-Drop Structure

To address the issue of poor generalization ability in end-to-end speech recognition models within deep learning, this study proposes a new Conformer-based speech recognition model called "Conformer-R" that incorporates the R-drop structure. This model combines the Conformer model, which has shown promising results in speech recognition, with the R-drop structure. By doing so, the model is able to effectively model both local and global speech information while also reducing overfitting through the use of the R-drop structure. This enhances the model's ability to generalize and improves overall recognition efficiency. The model was first pre-trained on the Aishell1 and Wenetspeech datasets for general domain adaptation, and subsequently fine-tuned on computer-related audio data. Comparison tests with classic models such as LAS and Wenet were performed on the same test set, demonstrating the Conformer-R model's ability to effectively improve generalization.

Research on Named Entity Recognition in Improved transformer with R-Drop structure

To enhance the generalization ability of the model and improve the effectiveness of the transformer for named entity recognition tasks, the XLNet-Transformer-R model is proposed in this paper. The XLNet pre-trained model and the Transformer encoder with relative positional encodings are combined to enhance the model's ability to process long text and learn contextual information to improve robustness. To prevent overfitting, the R-Drop structure is used to improve the generalization capability and enhance the accuracy of the model in named entity recognition tasks. The model in this paper performs ablation experiments on the MSRA dataset and comparison experiments with other models on four datasets with excellent performance, demonstrating the strategic effectiveness of the XLNet-Transformer-R model.

DialogVCS: Robust Natural Language Understanding in Dialogue System Upgrade

In the constant updates of the product dialogue systems, we need to retrain the natural language understanding (NLU) model as new data from the real users would be merged into the existent data accumulated in the last updates. Within the newly added data, new intents would emerge and might have semantic entanglement with the existing intents, e.g. new intents that are semantically too specific or generic are actually subset or superset of some existing intents in the semantic space, thus impairing the robustness of the NLU model. As the first attempt to solve this problem, we setup a new benchmark consisting of 4 Dialogue Version Control dataSets (DialogVCS). We formulate the intent detection with imperfect data in the system update as a multi-label classification task with positive but unlabeled intents, which asks the models to recognize all the proper intents, including the ones with semantic entanglement, in the inference. We also propose comprehensive baseline models and conduct in-depth analyses for the benchmark, showing that the semantically entangled intents can be effectively recognized with an automatic workflow.

Blockchained Federated Learning for Internet of Things: A Comprehensive Survey

The demand for intelligent industries and smart services based on big data is rising rapidly with the increasing digitization and intelligence of the modern world. This survey comprehensively reviews Blockchained Federated Learning (BlockFL) that joins the benefits of both Blockchain and Federated Learning to provide a secure and efficient solution for the demand. We compare the existing BlockFL models in four Internet-of-Things (IoT) application scenarios: Personal IoT (PIoT), Industrial IoT (IIoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and Internet of Health Things (IoHT), with a focus on security and privacy, trust and reliability, efficiency, and data heterogeneity. Our analysis shows that the features of decentralization and transparency make BlockFL a secure and effective solution for distributed model training, while the overhead and compatibility still need further study. It also reveals the unique challenges of each domain presents unique challenges, e.g., the requirement of accommodating dynamic environments in IoV and the high demands of identity and permission management in IoHT, in addition to some common challenges identified, such as privacy, resource constraints, and data heterogeneity. Furthermore, we examine the existing technologies that can benefit BlockFL, thereby helping researchers and practitioners to make informed decisions about the selection and development of BlockFL for various IoT application scenarios.

Point Transformer For Coronary Artery Labeling

Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) scans are widely used for diagnosis of coronary artery diseases. An accurate and automatic vessel labeling algorithm for CCTA analysis can significantly improve the diagnostic efficiency and reduce the clinicians'manual efforts. In this paper, we propose a simple vessel labeling method based on the Point Transformer, which only needs the coronary artery segmentation. Specifically, firstly, the coronary segmentation is transformed to point cloud. Then, these points are fed into the hierarchical transformer blocks to obtain the multi-level features, including local and global features. Finally, the network output the semantic classification points and map them to centerline labeling. This method is only based on the structure of coronary segmentation and need not other features, so it is easy to generalize to other vessel labeling tasks, e.g., head and neck vessel labeling. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, CCTA scans of 53 subjects are collected in our experiment. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.

Correspondence-Free Domain Alignment for Unsupervised Cross-Domain Image Retrieval

Cross-domain image retrieval aims at retrieving images across different domains to excavate cross-domain classificatory or correspondence relationships. This paper studies a less-touched problem of cross-domain image retrieval, i.e., unsupervised cross-domain image retrieval, considering the following practical assumptions: (i) no correspondence relationship, and (ii) no category annotations. It is challenging to align and bridge distinct domains without cross-domain correspondence. To tackle the challenge, we present a novel Correspondence-free Domain Alignment (CoDA) method to effectively eliminate the cross-domain gap through In-domain Self-matching Supervision (ISS) and Cross-domain Classifier Alignment (CCA). To be specific, ISS is presented to encapsulate discriminative information into the latent common space by elaborating a novel self-matching supervision mechanism. To alleviate the cross-domain discrepancy, CCA is proposed to align distinct domain-specific classifiers. Thanks to the ISS and CCA, our method could encode the discrimination into the domain-invariant embedding space for unsupervised cross-domain image retrieval. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted on four benchmark datasets compared with six state-of-the-art methods.
