How Multilingual is Multilingual LLM?

Large Language Models (LLMs), trained predominantly on extensive English data, often exhibit limitations when applied to other languages. Current research is primarily focused on enhancing the multilingual capabilities of these models by employing various tuning strategies. Despite their effectiveness in certain languages, the understanding of the multilingual abilities of LLMs remains incomplete. This study endeavors to evaluate the multilingual capacity of LLMs by conducting an exhaustive analysis across 101 languages, and classifies languages with similar characteristics into four distinct quadrants. By delving into each quadrant, we shed light on the rationale behind their categorization and offer actionable guidelines for tuning these languages. Extensive experiments reveal that existing LLMs possess multilingual capabilities that surpass our expectations, and we can significantly improve the multilingual performance of LLMs by focusing on these distinct attributes present in each quadrant.

Object-centric Cross-modal Feature Distillation for Event-based Object Detection

Event cameras are gaining popularity due to their unique properties, such as their low latency and high dynamic range. One task where these benefits can be crucial is real-time object detection. However, RGB detectors still outperform event-based detectors due to the sparsity of the event data and missing visual details. In this paper, we develop a novel knowledge distillation approach to shrink the performance gap between these two modalities. To this end, we propose a cross-modality object detection distillation method that by design can focus on regions where the knowledge distillation works best. We achieve this by using an object-centric slot attention mechanism that can iteratively decouple features maps into object-centric features and corresponding pixel-features used for distillation. We evaluate our novel distillation approach on a synthetic and a real event dataset with aligned grayscale images as a teacher modality. We show that object-centric distillation allows to significantly improve the performance of the event-based student object detector, nearly halving the performance gap with respect to the teacher.

FETV: A Benchmark for Fine-Grained Evaluation of Open-Domain Text-to-Video Generation

Recently, open-domain text-to-video (T2V) generation models have made remarkable progress. However, the promising results are mainly shown by the qualitative cases of generated videos, while the quantitative evaluation of T2V models still faces two critical problems. Firstly, existing studies lack fine-grained evaluation of T2V models on different categories of text prompts. Although some benchmarks have categorized the prompts, their categorization either only focuses on a single aspect or fails to consider the temporal information in video generation. Secondly, it is unclear whether the automatic evaluation metrics are consistent with human standards. To address these problems, we propose FETV, a benchmark for Fine-grained Evaluation of Text-to-Video generation. FETV is multi-aspect, categorizing the prompts based on three orthogonal aspects: the major content, the attributes to control and the prompt complexity. FETV is also temporal-aware, which introduces several temporal categories tailored for video generation. Based on FETV, we conduct comprehensive manual evaluations of four representative T2V models, revealing their pros and cons on different categories of prompts from different aspects. We also extend FETV as a testbed to evaluate the reliability of automatic T2V metrics. The multi-aspect categorization of FETV enables fine-grained analysis of the metrics' reliability in different scenarios. We find that existing automatic metrics (e.g., CLIPScore and FVD) correlate poorly with human evaluation. To address this problem, we explore several solutions to improve CLIPScore and FVD, and develop two automatic metrics that exhibit significant higher correlation with humans than existing metrics. RPCANet: Deep Unfolding RPCA Based Infrared Small Target Detection

Deep learning (DL) networks have achieved remarkable performance in infrared small target detection (ISTD). However, these structures exhibit a deficiency in interpretability and are widely regarded as black boxes, as they disregard domain knowledge in ISTD. To alleviate this issue, this work proposes an interpretable deep network for detecting infrared dim targets, dubbed RPCANet. Specifically, our approach formulates the ISTD task as sparse target extraction, low-rank background estimation, and image reconstruction in a relaxed Robust Principle Component Analysis (RPCA) model. By unfolding the iterative optimization updating steps into a deep-learning framework, time-consuming and complex matrix calculations are replaced by theory-guided neural networks. RPCANet detects targets with clear interpretability and preserves the intrinsic image feature, instead of directly transforming the detection task into a matrix decomposition problem. Extensive experiments substantiate the effectiveness of our deep unfolding framework and demonstrate its trustworthy results, surpassing baseline methods in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

CPSeg: Finer-grained Image Semantic Segmentation via Chain-of-Thought Language Prompting

Natural scene analysis and remote sensing imagery offer immense potential for advancements in large-scale language-guided context-aware data utilization. This potential is particularly significant for enhancing performance in downstream tasks such as object detection and segmentation with designed language prompting. In light of this, we introduce the CPSeg, Chain-of-Thought Language Prompting for Finer-grained Semantic Segmentation), an innovative framework designed to augment image segmentation performance by integrating a novel "Chain-of-Thought" process that harnesses textual information associated with images. This groundbreaking approach has been applied to a flood disaster scenario. CPSeg encodes prompt texts derived from various sentences to formulate a coherent chain-of-thought. We propose a new vision-language dataset, FloodPrompt, which includes images, semantic masks, and corresponding text information. This not only strengthens the semantic understanding of the scenario but also aids in the key task of semantic segmentation through an interplay of pixel and text matching maps. Our qualitative and quantitative analyses validate the effectiveness of CPSeg.

Segment Any Building For Remote Sensing

The task of identifying and segmenting buildings within remote sensing imagery has perennially stood at the forefront of scholarly investigations. This manuscript accentuates the potency of harnessing diversified datasets in tandem with cutting-edge representation learning paradigms for building segmentation in such images. Through the strategic amalgamation of disparate datasets, we have not only expanded the informational horizon accessible for model training but also manifested unparalleled performance metrics across multiple datasets. Our avant-garde joint training regimen underscores the merit of our approach, bearing significant implications in pivotal domains such as urban infrastructural development, disaster mitigation strategies, and ecological surveillance. Our methodology, predicated upon the fusion of datasets and gleaning insights from pre-trained models, carves a new benchmark in the annals of building segmentation endeavors. The outcomes of this research both fortify the foundations for ensuing scholarly pursuits and presage a horizon replete with innovative applications in the discipline of building segmentation.

Syntax Error-Free and Generalizable Tool Use for LLMs via Finite-State Decoding

Large language models (LLMs) have shown promising capabilities in using external tools to solve complex problems. However, existing approaches either involve fine-tuning on tool demonstrations, which do not generalize to new tools without additional training, or providing tool documentation in context, limiting the number of tools. Both approaches often generate syntactically invalid tool calls. In this paper, we propose ToolDec, a finite-state machine-guided decoding algorithm for tool-augmented LLMs. ToolDec eliminates tool-related errors for any tool-augmented LLMs by ensuring valid tool names and type-conforming arguments. Furthermore, ToolDec enables LLM to effectively select tools using only the information contained in their names, with no need for fine-tuning or in-context documentation. We evaluated multiple prior methods and their ToolDec-enhanced versions on a variety of tasks involving tools like math functions, knowledge graph relations, and complex real-world RESTful APIs. Our experiments show that ToolDec reduces syntactic errors to zero, consequently achieving significantly better performance and as much as a 2x speedup. We also show that ToolDec achieves superior generalization performance on unseen tools, performing up to 8x better than the baselines.

Learning Personalized Story Evaluation

While large language models (LLMs) have shown impressive results for more objective tasks such as QA and retrieval, it remains nontrivial to evaluate their performance on open-ended text generation for reasons including (1) data contamination; (2) multi-dimensional evaluation criteria; and (3) subjectiveness stemming from reviewers' personal preferences. To address such issues, we propose to model personalization in an uncontaminated open-ended generation assessment. We create two new datasets Per-MPST and Per-DOC for personalized story evaluation, by re-purposing existing datasets with proper anonymization and new personalized labels. We further develop a personalized story evaluation model PERSE to infer reviewer preferences and provide a personalized evaluation. Specifically, given a few exemplary reviews from a particular reviewer, PERSE predicts either a detailed review or fine-grained comparison in several aspects (such as interestingness and surprise) for that reviewer on a new text input. Experimental results show that PERSE outperforms GPT-4 by 15.8% on Kendall correlation of story ratings, and by 13.7% on pairwise preference prediction accuracy.
