Simultaneous machine translation (SimulMT) models start translation before the end of the source sentence, making the translation monotonically aligned with the source sentence. However, the general full-sentence translation test set is acquired by offline translation of the entire source sentence, which is not designed for SimulMT evaluation, making us rethink whether this will underestimate the performance of SimulMT models. In this paper, we manually annotate a monotonic test set based on the MuST-C English-Chinese test set, denoted as SiMuST-C. Our human evaluation confirms the acceptability of our annotated test set. Evaluations on three different SimulMT models verify that the underestimation problem can be alleviated on our test set. Further experiments show that finetuning on an automatically extracted monotonic training set improves SimulMT models by up to 3 BLEU points.
Previous works on emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) follow a two-step paradigm, which can be summarized as first producing context-independent features via fine-tuning pretrained language models (PLMs) and then analyzing contextual information and dialogue structure information among the extracted features. However, we discover that this paradigm has several limitations. Accordingly, we propose a novel paradigm, i.e., exploring contextual information and dialogue structure information in the fine-tuning step, and adapting the PLM to the ERC task in terms of input text, classification structure, and training strategy. Furthermore, we develop our model BERT-ERC according to the proposed paradigm, which improves ERC performance in three aspects, namely suggestive text, fine-grained classification module, and two-stage training. Compared to existing methods, BERT-ERC achieves substantial improvement on four datasets, indicating its effectiveness and generalization capability. Besides, we also set up the limited resources scenario and the online prediction scenario to approximate real-world scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed paradigm significantly outperforms the previous one and can be adapted to various scenes.
Morality in dialogue systems has raised great attention in research recently. A moral dialogue system could better connect users and enhance conversation engagement by gaining users' trust. In this paper, we propose a framework, MoralDial to train and evaluate moral dialogue systems. In our framework, we first explore the communication mechanisms of morality and resolve expressed morality into four sub-modules. The sub-modules indicate the roadmap for building a moral dialogue system. Based on that, we design a simple yet effective method: constructing moral discussions from Rules of Thumb (RoTs) between simulated specific users and the dialogue system. The constructed discussion consists of expressing, explaining, and revising the moral views in dialogue exchanges, which makes conversational models learn morality well in a natural manner. Furthermore, we propose a novel evaluation method in the framework. We evaluate the multiple aspects of morality by judging the relation between dialogue responses and RoTs in discussions, where the multifaceted nature of morality is particularly considered. Automatic and manual experiments demonstrate that our framework is promising to train and evaluate moral dialogue systems.
Though impressive success has been witnessed in computer vision, deep learning still suffers from the domain shift challenge when the target domain for testing and the source domain for training do not share an identical distribution. To address this, domain generalization approaches intend to extract domain invariant features that can lead to a more robust model. Hence, increasing the source domain diversity is a key component of domain generalization. Style augmentation takes advantage of instance-specific feature statistics containing informative style characteristics to synthetic novel domains. However, all previous works ignored the correlation between different feature channels or only limited the style augmentation through linear interpolation. In this work, we propose a novel augmentation method, called \textit{Correlated Style Uncertainty (CSU)}, to go beyond the linear interpolation of style statistic space while preserving the essential correlation information. We validate our method's effectiveness by extensive experiments on multiple cross-domain classification tasks, including widely used PACS, Office-Home, Camelyon17 datasets and the Duke-Market1501 instance retrieval task and obtained significant margin improvements over the state-of-the-art methods. We present Relational Sentence Embedding (RSE), a new paradigm to further discover the potential of sentence embeddings. Prior work mainly models the similarity between sentences based on their embedding distance. Because of the complex semantic meanings conveyed, sentence pairs can have various relation types, including but not limited to entailment, paraphrasing, and question-answer. It poses challenges to existing embedding methods to capture such relational information. We handle the problem by learning associated relational embeddings. Specifically, a relation-wise translation operation is applied to the source sentence to infer the corresponding target sentence with a pre-trained Siamese-based encoder. The fine-grained relational similarity scores can be computed from learned embeddings. We benchmark our method on 19 datasets covering a wide range of tasks, including semantic textual similarity, transfer, and domain-specific tasks. To balance the annotation labor and the granularity of supervision, single-frame annotation has been introduced in temporal action localization. It provides a rough temporal location for an action but implicitly overstates the supervision from the annotated-frame during training, leading to the confusion between actions and backgrounds, i.e., action incompleteness and background false positives. To tackle the two challenges, in this work, we present the Snippet Classification model and the Dilation-Erosion module. In the Dilation-Erosion module, we expand the potential action segments with a loose criterion to alleviate the problem of action incompleteness and then remove the background from the potential action segments to alleviate the problem of action incompleteness. Relying on the single-frame annotation and the output of the snippet classification, the Dilation-Erosion module mines pseudo snippet-level ground-truth, hard backgrounds and evident backgrounds, which in turn further trains the Snippet Classification model. It forms a cyclic dependency. Furthermore, we propose a new embedding loss to aggregate the features of action instances with the same label and separate the features of actions from backgrounds. Experiments on THUMOS14 and ActivityNet 1.2 validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Code has been made publicly available (https://github.com/LingJun123/single-frame-TAL).
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have constantly achieved better performance over years by introducing more complex topology, and enlarging the capacity towards deeper and wider CNNs. This makes the manual design of CNNs extremely difficult, so the automated design of CNNs has come into the research spotlight, which has obtained CNNs that outperform manually-designed CNNs. However, the computational cost is still the bottleneck of automatically designing CNNs. In this paper, inspired by transfer learning, a new evolutionary computation based framework is proposed to efficiently evolve CNNs without compromising the classification accuracy. The proposed framework leverages multi-source domains, which are smaller datasets than the target domain datasets, to evolve a generalised CNN block only once. And then, a new stacking method is proposed to both widen and deepen the evolved block, and a grid search method is proposed to find optimal stacking solutions. The experimental results show the proposed method acquires good CNNs faster than 15 peer competitors within less than 40 GPU-hours. Regarding the classification accuracy, the proposed method gains its strong competitiveness against the peer competitors, which achieves the best error rates of 3.46%, 18.36% and 1.76% for the CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and SVHN datasets, respectively.
Open Information Extraction (OpenIE) facilitates the open-domain discovery of textual facts. However, the prevailing solutions evaluate OpenIE models on in-domain test sets aside from the training corpus, which certainly violates the initial task principle of domain-independence. In this paper, we propose to advance OpenIE towards a more realistic scenario: generalizing over unseen target domains with different data distributions from the source training domains, termed Generalized OpenIE. For this purpose, we first introduce GLOBE, a large-scale human-annotated multi-domain OpenIE benchmark, to examine the robustness of recent OpenIE models to domain shifts, and the relative performance degradation of up to 70% implies the challenges of generalized OpenIE. Then, we propose DragonIE, which explores a minimalist graph expression of textual fact: directed acyclic graph, to improve the OpenIE generalization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DragonIE beats the previous methods in both in-domain and out-of-domain settings by as much as 6.0% in F1 score absolutely, but there is still ample room for improvement.
Deep convolutional neural networks have proven their effectiveness, and have been acknowledged as the most dominant method for image classification. However, a severe drawback of deep convolutional neural networks is poor explainability. Unfortunately, in many real-world applications, users need to understand the rationale behind the predictions of deep convolutional neural networks when determining whether they should trust the predictions or not. To resolve this issue, a novel genetic algorithm-based method is proposed for the first time to automatically evolve local explanations that can assist users to assess the rationality of the predictions. Furthermore, the proposed method is model-agnostic, i.e., it can be utilised to explain any deep convolutional neural network models. In the experiments, ResNet is used as an example model to be explained, and the ImageNet dataset is selected as the benchmark dataset. DenseNet and MobileNet are further explained to demonstrate the model-agnostic characteristic of the proposed method. The evolved local explanations on four images, randomly selected from ImageNet, are presented, which show that the evolved local explanations are straightforward to be recognised by humans. Moreover, the evolved explanations can explain the predictions of deep convolutional neural networks on all four images very well by successfully capturing meaningful interpretable features of the sample images. Further analysis based on the 30 runs of the experiments exhibits that the evolved local explanations can also improve the probabilities/confidences of the deep convolutional neural network models in making the predictions. The proposed method can obtain local explanations within one minute, which is more than ten times faster than LIME (the state-of-the-art method).
The latent world model provides a promising way to learn policies in a compact latent space for tasks with high-dimensional observations, however, its generalization across diverse environments with unseen dynamics remains challenging. Although the recurrent structure utilized in current advances helps to capture local dynamics, modeling only state transitions without an explicit understanding of environmental context limits the generalization ability of the dynamics model. To address this issue, we propose a Prototypical Context-Aware Dynamics (ProtoCAD) model, which captures the local dynamics by time consistent latent context and enables dynamics generalization in high-dimensional control tasks. ProtoCAD extracts useful contextual information with the help of the prototypes clustered over batch and benefits model-based RL in two folds: 1) It utilizes a temporally consistent prototypical regularizer that encourages the prototype assignments produced for different time parts of the same latent trajectory to be temporally consistent instead of comparing the features; 2) A context representation is designed which combines both the projection embedding of latent states and aggregated prototypes and can significantly improve the dynamics generalization ability. Extensive experiments show that ProtoCAD surpasses existing methods in terms of dynamics generalization. Compared with the recurrent-based model RSSM, ProtoCAD delivers 13.2% and 26.7% better mean and median performance across all dynamics generalization tasks.
