The Environmental Microorganism Image Dataset Seventh Version (EMDS-7) is a microscopic image data set, including the original Environmental Microorganism images (EMs) and the corresponding object labeling files in ".XML" format file. The EMDS-7 data set consists of 41 types of EMs, which has a total of 2365 images and 13216 labeled objects. The EMDS-7 database mainly focuses on the object detection. In order to prove the effectiveness of EMDS-7, we select the most commonly used deep learning methods (Faster-RCNN, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, SSD and RetinaNet) and evaluation indices for testing and evaluation. EMDS-7 is freely published for non-commercial purpose at: https://github.com/yanghechen/EMDS-7
In many applications, we have access to the complete dataset but are only interested in the prediction of a particular region of predictor variables. A standard approach is to find the globally best modeling method from a set of candidate methods. However, it is perhaps rare in reality that one candidate method is uniformly better than the others. A natural approach for this scenario is to apply a weighted $L_2$ loss in performance assessment to reflect the region-specific interest. We propose a targeted cross-validation (TCV) to select models or procedures based on a general weighted $L_2$ loss. We show that the TCV is consistent in selecting the best performing candidate under the weighted $L_2$ loss. Experimental studies are used to demonstrate the use of TCV and its potential advantage over the global CV or the approach of using only local data for modeling a local region. Previous investigations on CV have relied on the condition that when the sample size is large enough, the ranking of two candidates stays the same. However, in many applications with the setup of changing data-generating processes or highly adaptive modeling methods, the relative performance of the methods is not static as the sample size varies. Even with a fixed data-generating process, it is possible that the ranking of two methods switches infinitely many times. In this work, we broaden the concept of the selection consistency by allowing the best candidate to switch as the sample size varies, and then establish the consistency of the TCV. This flexible framework can be applied to high-dimensional and complex machine learning scenarios where the relative performances of modeling procedures are dynamic.
Type-B Aortic Dissection (TBAD) is one of the most serious cardiovascular events characterized by a growing yearly incidence, and the severity of disease prognosis. Currently, computed tomography angiography (CTA) has been widely adopted for the diagnosis and prognosis of TBAD. Accurate segmentation of true lumen (TL), false lumen (FL), and false lumen thrombus (FLT) in CTA are crucial for the precise quantification of anatomical features. However, existing works only focus on only TL and FL without considering FLT. In this paper, we propose ImageTBAD, the first 3D computed tomography angiography (CTA) image dataset of TBAD with annotation of TL, FL, and FLT. The proposed dataset contains 100 TBAD CTA images, which is of decent size compared with existing medical imaging datasets. As FLT can appear almost anywhere along the aorta with irregular shapes, segmentation of FLT presents a wide class of segmentation problems where targets exist in a variety of positions with irregular shapes. We further propose a baseline method for automatic segmentation of TBAD. Results show that the baseline method can achieve comparable results with existing works on aorta and TL segmentation. However, the segmentation accuracy of FLT is only 52%, which leaves large room for improvement and also shows the challenge of our dataset. To facilitate further research on this challenging problem, our dataset and codes are released to the public.
In order to model the evolution of user preference, we should learn user/item embeddings based on time-ordered item purchasing sequences, which is defined as Sequential Recommendation (SR) problem. Existing methods leverage sequential patterns to model item transitions. However, most of them ignore crucial temporal collaborative signals, which are latent in evolving user-item interactions and coexist with sequential patterns. Therefore, we propose to unify sequential patterns and temporal collaborative signals to improve the quality of recommendation, which is rather challenging. Firstly, it is hard to simultaneously encode sequential patterns and collaborative signals. Secondly, it is non-trivial to express the temporal effects of collaborative signals. Hence, we design a new framework Temporal Graph Sequential Recommender (TGSRec) upon our defined continuous-time bi-partite graph. We propose a novel Temporal Collaborative Trans-former (TCT) layer in TGSRec, which advances the self-attention mechanism by adopting a novel collaborative attention. TCT layer can simultaneously capture collaborative signals from both users and items, as well as considering temporal dynamics inside sequential patterns. We propagate the information learned fromTCTlayerover the temporal graph to unify sequential patterns and temporal collaborative signals. Empirical results on five datasets show that TGSRec significantly outperforms other baselines, in average up to 22.5% and 22.1%absolute improvements in Recall@10and MRR, respectively.
Learning RAW-to-sRGB mapping has drawn increasing attention in recent years, wherein an input raw image is trained to imitate the target sRGB image captured by another camera. However, the severe color inconsistency makes it very challenging to generate well-aligned training pairs of input raw and target sRGB images. While learning with inaccurately aligned supervision is prone to causing pixel shift and producing blurry results. In this paper, we circumvent such issue by presenting a joint learning model for image alignment and RAW-to-sRGB mapping. To diminish the effect of color inconsistency in image alignment, we introduce to use a global color mapping (GCM) module to generate an initial sRGB image given the input raw image, which can keep the spatial location of the pixels unchanged, and the target sRGB image is utilized to guide GCM for converting the color towards it. Then a pre-trained optical flow estimation network (e.g., PWC-Net) is deployed to warp the target sRGB image to align with the GCM output. To alleviate the effect of inaccurately aligned supervision, the warped target sRGB image is leveraged to learn RAW-to-sRGB mapping. When training is done, the GCM module and optical flow network can be detached, thereby bringing no extra computation cost for inference. Experiments show that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-arts on ZRR and SR-RAW datasets. With our joint learning model, a light-weight backbone can achieve better quantitative and qualitative performance on ZRR dataset. Codes are available at https://github.com/cszhilu1998/RAW-to-sRGB.
Boundary based blackbox attack has been recognized as practical and effective, given that an attacker only needs to access the final model prediction. However, the query efficiency of it is in general high especially for high dimensional image data. In this paper, we show that such efficiency highly depends on the scale at which the attack is applied, and attacking at the optimal scale significantly improves the efficiency. In particular, we propose a theoretical framework to analyze and show three key characteristics to improve the query efficiency. We prove that there exists an optimal scale for projective gradient estimation. Our framework also explains the satisfactory performance achieved by existing boundary black-box attacks. Based on our theoretical framework, we propose Progressive-Scale enabled projective Boundary Attack (PSBA) to improve the query efficiency via progressive scaling techniques. In particular, we employ Progressive-GAN to optimize the scale of projections, which we call PSBA-PGAN. We evaluate our approach on both spatial and frequency scales. Extensive experiments on MNIST, CIFAR-10, CelebA, and ImageNet against different models including a real-world face recognition API show that PSBA-PGAN significantly outperforms existing baseline attacks in terms of query efficiency and attack success rate. We also observe relatively stable optimal scales for different models and datasets. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/AI-secure/PSBA.
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a potential separation between the septum, primum and septum secundum located in the anterosuperior portion of the atrial septum. PFO is one of the main factors causing cryptogenic stroke which is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. For PFO diagnosis, contrast transthoracic echocardiography (cTTE) is preferred as being a more robust method compared with others. However, the current PFO diagnosis through cTTE is extremely slow as it is proceeded manually by sonographers on echocardiography videos. Currently there is no publicly available dataset for this important topic in the community. In this paper, we present EchoCP, as the first echocardiography dataset in cTTE targeting PFO diagnosis. EchoCP consists of 30 patients with both rest and Valsalva maneuver videos which covers various PFO grades. We further establish an automated baseline method for PFO diagnosis based on the state-of-the-art cardiac chamber segmentation technique, which achieves 0.89 average mean Dice score, but only 0.70/0.67 mean accuracies for PFO diagnosis, leaving large room for improvement. We hope that the challenging EchoCP dataset can stimulate further research and lead to innovative and generic solutions that would have an impact in multiple domains. Our dataset is released.
Deep learning has become the most powerful machine learning tool in the last decade. However, how to efficiently train deep neural networks remains to be thoroughly solved. The widely used minibatch stochastic gradient descent (SGD) still needs to be accelerated. As a promising tool to better understand the learning dynamic of minibatch SGD, the information bottleneck (IB) theory claims that the optimization process consists of an initial fitting phase and the following compression phase. Based on this principle, we further study typicality sampling, an efficient data selection method, and propose a new explanation of how it helps accelerate the training process of the deep networks. We show that the fitting phase depicted in the IB theory will be boosted with a high signal-to-noise ratio of gradient approximation if the typicality sampling is appropriately adopted. Furthermore, this finding also implies that the prior information of the training set is critical to the optimization process and the better use of the most important data can help the information flow through the bottleneck faster. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate our conclusions.
Microorganisms play a vital role in human life. Therefore, microorganism detection is of great significance to human beings. However, the traditional manual microscopic detection methods have the disadvantages of long detection cycle, low detection accuracy in large orders, and great difficulty in detecting uncommon microorganisms. Therefore, it is meaningful to apply computer image analysis technology to the field of microorganism detection. Computer image analysis can realize high-precision and high-efficiency detection of microorganisms. In this review, first,we analyse the existing microorganism detection methods in chronological order, from traditional image processing and traditional machine learning to deep learning methods. Then, we analyze and summarize these existing methods and introduce some potential methods, including visual transformers. In the end, the future development direction and challenges of microorganism detection are discussed. In general, we have summarized 137 related technical papers from 1985 to the present. This review will help researchers have a more comprehensive understanding of the development process, research status, and future trends in the field of microorganism detection and provide a reference for researchers in other fields.
