Collecting large clean-distorted training image pairs in real world is non-trivial, which seriously limits the practical applications of these supervised learning based image restoration (IR) methods. Previous works attempt to address this problem by leveraging unsupervised learning technologies to alleviate the dependency for paired training samples. However, these methods typically suffer from unsatisfactory textures synthesis due to the lack of clean image supervision. Compared with purely unsupervised solution, the under-explored scheme with Few-Shot clean images (FS-IR) is more feasible to tackle this challenging real Image Restoration task. In this paper, we are the first to investigate the few-shot real image restoration and propose a Distortion-Relation guided Transfer Learning (termed as DRTL) framework. DRTL assigns a knowledge graph to capture the distortion relation between auxiliary tasks (i.e., synthetic distortions) and target tasks (i.e., real distortions with few images), and then adopt a gradient weighting strategy to guide the knowledge transfer from auxiliary task to target task. In this way, DRTL could quickly learn the most relevant knowledge from the prior distortions for target distortion. We instantiate DRTL integrated with pre-training and meta-learning pipelines as an embodiment to realize a distortion-relation aware FS-IR. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of DRTL on few-shot real image restoration.
Recently, Vision Transformers (ViT), with the self-attention (SA) as the de facto ingredients, have demonstrated great potential in the computer vision community. For the sake of trade-off between efficiency and performance, a group of works merely perform SA operation within local patches, whereas the global contextual information is abandoned, which would be indispensable for visual recognition tasks. To solve the issue, the subsequent global-local ViTs take a stab at marrying local SA with global one in parallel or alternative way in the model. Nevertheless, the exhaustively combined local and global context may exist redundancy for various visual data, and the receptive field within each layer is fixed. Alternatively, a more graceful way is that global and local context can adaptively contribute per se to accommodate different visual data. To achieve this goal, we in this paper propose a novel ViT architecture, termed NomMer, which can dynamically Nominate the synergistic global-local context in vision transforMer. By investigating the working pattern of our proposed NomMer, we further explore what context information is focused. Beneficial from this "dynamic nomination" mechanism, without bells and whistles, the NomMer can not only achieve 84.5% Top-1 classification accuracy on ImageNet with only 73M parameters, but also show promising performance on dense prediction tasks, i.e., object detection and semantic segmentation. Social network alignment aims at aligning person identities across social networks. Embedding based models have been shown effective for the alignment where the structural proximity preserving objective is typically adopted for the model training. With the observation that ``overly-close'' user embeddings are unavoidable for such models causing alignment inaccuracy, we propose a novel learning framework which tries to enforce the resulting embeddings to be more widely apart among the users via the introduction of carefully implanted pseudo anchors. We further proposed a meta-learning algorithm to guide the updating of the pseudo anchor embeddings during the learning process. The proposed intervention via the use of pseudo anchors and meta-learning allows the learning framework to be applicable to a wide spectrum of network alignment methods. We have incorporated the proposed learning framework into several state-of-the-art models. Our experimental results demonstrate its efficacy where the methods with the pseudo anchors implanted can outperform their counterparts without pseudo anchors by a fairly large margin, especially when there only exist very few labeled anchors.
Knowledge enriched language representation learning has shown promising performance across various knowledge-intensive NLP tasks. However, existing knowledge based language models are all trained with monolingual knowledge graph data, which limits their application to more languages. In this work, we present a novel framework to pretrain knowledge based multilingual language models (KMLMs). We first generate a large amount of code-switched synthetic sentences and reasoning-based multilingual training data using the Wikidata knowledge graphs. Then based on the intra- and inter-sentence structures of the generated data, we design pretraining tasks to facilitate knowledge learning, which allows the language models to not only memorize the factual knowledge but also learn useful logical patterns. Our pretrained KMLMs demonstrate significant performance improvements on a wide range of knowledge-intensive cross-lingual NLP tasks, including named entity recognition, factual knowledge retrieval, relation classification, and a new task designed by us, namely, logic reasoning. Our code and pretrained language models will be made publicly available.
International collaboration has become imperative in the field of AI. However, few studies exist concerning how distance factors have affected the international collaboration in AI research. In this study, we investigate this problem by using 1,294,644 AI related collaborative papers harvested from the Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG) dataset. A framework including 13 indicators to quantify the distance factors between countries from 5 perspectives (i.e., geographic distance, economic distance, cultural distance, academic distance, and industrial distance) is proposed. The relationships were conducted by the methods of descriptive analysis and regression analysis. The results show that international collaboration in the field of AI today is not prevalent (only 15.7%). All the separations in international collaborations have increased over years, except for the cultural distance in masculinity/felinity dimension and the industrial distance. The geographic distance, economic distance and academic distances have shown significantly negative relationships with the degree of international collaborations in the field of AI. The industrial distance has a significant positive relationship with the degree of international collaboration in the field of AI. Also, the results demonstrate that the participation of the United States and China have promoted the international collaboration in the field of AI. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of internationalizing AI research in geographic, economic, cultural, academic, and industrial aspects.
The main goal of point cloud registration in Multi-View Partial (MVP) Challenge 2021 is to estimate a rigid transformation to align a point cloud pair. The pairs in this competition have the characteristics of low overlap, non-uniform density, unrestricted rotations and ambiguity, which pose a huge challenge to the registration task. In this report, we introduce our solution to the registration task, which fuses two deep learning models: ROPNet and PREDATOR, with customized ensemble strategies. Finally, we achieved the second place in the registration track with 2.96546, 0.02632 and 0.07808 under the the metrics of Rot\_Error, Trans\_Error and MSE, respectively.
We study multilingual AMR parsing from the perspective of knowledge distillation, where the aim is to learn and improve a multilingual AMR parser by using an existing English parser as its teacher. We constrain our exploration in a strict multilingual setting: there is but one model to parse all different languages including English. We identify that noisy input and precise output are the key to successful distillation. Together with extensive pre-training, we obtain an AMR parser whose performances surpass all previously published results on four different foreign languages, including German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese, by large margins (up to 18.8 \textsc{Smatch} points on Chinese and on average 11.3 \textsc{Smatch} points). Our parser also achieves comparable performance on English to the latest state-of-the-art English-only parser.
Pretraining language models with next-token prediction on massive text corpora has delivered phenomenal zero-shot, few-shot, transfer learning and multi-tasking capabilities on both generative and discriminative language tasks. Motivated by this success, we explore a Vector-quantized Image Modeling (VIM) approach that involves pretraining a Transformer to predict rasterized image tokens autoregressively. The discrete image tokens are encoded from a learned Vision-Transformer-based VQGAN (ViT-VQGAN). We first propose multiple improvements over vanilla VQGAN from architecture to codebook learning, yielding better efficiency and reconstruction fidelity. The improved ViT-VQGAN further improves vector-quantized image modeling tasks, including unconditional, class-conditioned image generation and unsupervised representation learning. When trained on ImageNet at 256x256 resolution, we achieve Inception Score (IS) of 175.1 and Fr'echet Inception Distance (FID) of 4.17, a dramatic improvement over the vanilla VQGAN, which obtains 70.6 and 17.04 for IS and FID, respectively. Based on ViT-VQGAN and unsupervised pretraining, we further evaluate the pretrained Transformer by averaging intermediate features, similar to Image GPT (iGPT). This ImageNet-pretrained VIM-L significantly beats iGPT-L on linear-probe accuracy from 60.3% to 72.2% for a similar model size. ViM-L also outperforms iGPT-XL which is trained with extra web image data and larger model size.
The real-time motion prediction of a floating offshore platform refers to forecasting its motions in the following one- or two-wave cycles, which helps improve the performance of a motion compensation system and provides useful early warning information. In this study, we extend a deep learning (DL) model, which could predict the heave and surge motions of a floating semi-submersible 20 to 50 seconds ahead with good accuracy, to quantify its uncertainty of the predictive time series with the help of the dropout technique. By repeating the inference several times, it is found that the collection of the predictive time series is a Gaussian process (GP). The DL model with dropout learned a kernel inside, and the learning procedure was similar to GP regression. Adding noise into training data could help the model to learn more robust features from the training data, thereby leading to a better performance on test data with a wide noise level range. This study extends the understanding of the DL model to predict the wave excited motions of an offshore platform.
Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has been extensively studied in recent years, which typically involves four fundamental sentiment elements, including the aspect category, aspect term, opinion term, and sentiment polarity. Existing studies usually consider the detection of partial sentiment elements, instead of predicting the four elements in one shot. In this work, we introduce the Aspect Sentiment Quad Prediction (ASQP) task, aiming to jointly detect all sentiment elements in quads for a given opinionated sentence, which can reveal a more comprehensive and complete aspect-level sentiment structure. We further propose a novel \textsc{Paraphrase} modeling paradigm to cast the ASQP task to a paraphrase generation process. On one hand, the generation formulation allows solving ASQP in an end-to-end manner, alleviating the potential error propagation in the pipeline solution. On the other hand, the semantics of the sentiment elements can be fully exploited by learning to generate them in the natural language form. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show the superiority of our proposed method and the capacity of cross-task transfer with the proposed unified \textsc{Paraphrase} modeling framework.
