The quality of vocal delivery is one of the key indicators for evaluating teacher enthusiasm, which has been widely accepted to be connected to the overall course qualities. However, existing evaluation for vocal delivery is mainly conducted with manual ratings, which faces two core challenges: subjectivity and time-consuming. In this paper, we present a novel machine learning approach that utilizes pairwise comparisons and a multimodal orthogonal fusing algorithm to generate large-scale objective evaluation results of the teacher vocal delivery in terms of fluency and passion. We collect two datasets from real-world education scenarios and the experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective solution to build practical teacher recommender systems for online one-on-one classes. Our system consists of (1) a pseudo matching score module that provides reliable training labels; (2) a ranking model that scores every candidate teacher; (3) a novelty boosting module that gives additional opportunities to new teachers; and (4) a diversity metric that guardrails the recommended results to reduce the chance of collision. Offline experimental results show that our approach outperforms a wide range of baselines. Furthermore, we show that our approach is able to reduce the number of student-teacher matching attempts from 7.22 to 3.09 in a five-month observation on a third-party online education platform.
In this work, we study computational approaches to detect online dialogic instructions, which are widely used to help students understand learning materials, and build effective study habits. This task is rather challenging due to the widely-varying quality and pedagogical styles of dialogic instructions. To address these challenges, we utilize pre-trained language models, and propose a multi-task paradigm which enhances the ability to distinguish instances of different classes by enlarging the margin between categories via contrastive loss. Furthermore, we design a strategy to fully exploit the misclassified examples during the training stage. Extensive experiments on a real-world online educational data set demonstrate that our approach achieves superior performance compared to representative baselines. Visual Question Answering (VQA) is concerned with answering free-form questions about an image. Since it requires a deep semantic and linguistic understanding of the question and the ability to associate it with various objects that are present in the image, it is an ambitious task and requires multi-modal reasoning from both computer vision and natural language processing. We propose Graphhopper, a novel method that approaches the task by integrating knowledge graph reasoning, computer vision, and natural language processing techniques. Concretely, our method is based on performing context-driven, sequential reasoning based on the scene entities and their semantic and spatial relationships. As a first step, we derive a scene graph that describes the objects in the image, as well as their attributes and their mutual relationships. Subsequently, a reinforcement learning agent is trained to autonomously navigate in a multi-hop manner over the extracted scene graph to generate reasoning paths, which are the basis for deriving answers. We conduct an experimental study on the challenging dataset GQA, based on both manually curated and automatically generated scene graphs. Our results show that we keep up with a human performance on manually curated scene graphs. Moreover, we find that Graphhopper outperforms another state-of-the-art scene graph reasoning model on both manually curated and automatically generated scene graphs by a significant margin.
The amount of medical images for training deep classification models is typically very scarce, making these deep models prone to overfit the training data. Studies showed that knowledge distillation (KD), especially the mean-teacher framework which is more robust to perturbations, can help mitigate the over-fitting effect. However, directly transferring KD from computer vision to medical image classification yields inferior performance as medical images suffer from higher intra-class variance and class imbalance. To address these issues, we propose a novel Categorical Relation-preserving Contrastive Knowledge Distillation (CRCKD) algorithm, which takes the commonly used mean-teacher model as the supervisor. Specifically, we propose a novel Class-guided Contrastive Distillation (CCD) module to pull closer positive image pairs from the same class in the teacher and student models, while pushing apart negative image pairs from different classes. With this regularization, the feature distribution of the student model shows higher intra-class similarity and inter-class variance. Besides, we propose a Categorical Relation Preserving (CRP) loss to distill the teacher's relational knowledge in a robust and class-balanced manner. With the contribution of the CCD and CRP, our CRCKD algorithm can distill the relational knowledge more comprehensively. Extensive experiments on the HAM10000 and APTOS datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed CRCKD method.
While pretrained language models ("LM") have driven impressive gains over morpho-syntactic and semantic tasks, their ability to model discourse and pragmatic phenomena is less clear. As a step towards a better understanding of their discourse modelling capabilities, we propose a sentence intrusion detection task. We examine the performance of a broad range of pretrained LMs on this detection task for English. Lacking a dataset for the task, we introduce INSteD, a novel intruder sentence detection dataset, containing 170,000+ documents constructed from English Wikipedia and CNN news articles. Our experiments show that pretrained LMs perform impressively in in-domain evaluation, but experience a substantial drop in the cross-domain setting, indicating limited generalisation capacity. Further results over a novel linguistic probe dataset show that there is substantial room for improvement, especially in the cross-domain setting.
Metasurfaces have provided a novel and promising platform for the realization of compact and large-scale optical devices. The conventional metasurface design approach assumes periodic boundary conditions for each element, which is inaccurate in most cases since the near-field coupling effects between elements will change when surrounded by non-identical structures. In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach to predict the actual electromagnetic (EM) responses of each target meta-atom placed in a large array with near-field coupling effects taken into account. The predicting neural network takes the physical specifications of the target meta-atom and its neighbors as input, and calculates its phase and amplitude in milliseconds. This approach can be applied to explain metasurfaces' performance deterioration caused by mutual coupling and further used to optimize their efficiencies once combined with optimization algorithms. To demonstrate the efficacy of this methodology, we obtain large improvements in efficiency for a beam deflector and a metalens over the conventional design approach. Moreover, we show the correlations between a metasurface's performance and its design errors caused by mutual coupling are not bound to certain specifications (materials, shapes, etc.). As such, we envision that this approach can be readily applied to explore the mutual coupling effects and improve the performance of various metasurface designs.
This paper is concerned with dialogue state tracking (DST) in a task-oriented dialogue system. Significant progress has been achieved recently on the development of DST technologies. However, building a DST module that is scalable and effective is still a challenging issue. This paper proposes a new approach to dialogue state tracking, referred to as Seq2Seq-DU, which formalizes DST as a sequence-to-sequence problem. It employs two BERT-based encoders to respectively encode the utterances in the dialogue and the descriptions of schemas, an attender to calculate attentions between the utterance embeddings and the schema embeddings, and a decoder to generate pointers to represent the current state of dialogue. Seq2Seq-DU has the following advantages. It can jointly model the relations between intents, slots, and slot values; it can utilize rich language representations of utterances and schemas; it can effectively deal with categorical slots, non-categorical slots, and unseen schemas. In addition, Seq2Seq-DU can also be used in the NLU (natural language understanding) module of a dialogue system. Experimental results on benchmark datasets in different settings (SGD, MultiWOZ2.2, WOZ2.0, DSTC2, M2M, SNIPS, and ATIS) show that Seq2Seq-DU outperforms the existing methods.
Pre-trained language models such as BERT have exhibited remarkable performances in many tasks in natural language understanding (NLU). The tokens in the models are usually fine-grained in the sense that for languages like English they are words or sub-words and for languages like Chinese they are characters. In English, for example, there are multi-word expressions which form natural lexical units and thus the use of coarse-grained tokenization also appears to be reasonable. In fact, both fine-grained and coarse-grained tokenizations have advantages and disadvantages for learning of pre-trained language models. In this paper, we propose a novel pre-trained language model, referred to as AMBERT (A Multi-grained BERT), on the basis of both fine-grained and coarse-grained tokenizations. For English, AMBERT takes both the sequence of words (fine-grained tokens) and the sequence of phrases (coarse-grained tokens) as input after tokenization, employs one encoder for processing the sequence of words and the other encoder for processing the sequence of the phrases, utilizes shared parameters between the two encoders, and finally creates a sequence of contextualized representations of the words and a sequence of contextualized representations of the phrases. Experiments have been conducted on benchmark datasets for Chinese and English, including CLUE, GLUE, SQuAD and RACE. The results show that AMBERT outperforms the existing best performing models in almost all cases, particularly the improvements are significant for Chinese.
