Although significant progress has been made in the field of 2D-based interactive editing, fine-grained 3D-based interactive editing remains relatively unexplored. This limitation can be attributed to two main challenges: the lack of an efficient 3D representation robust to different modifications and the absence of an effective 3D interactive segmentation method. In this paper, we introduce a novel fine-grained interactive 3D segmentation and editing algorithm with radiance fields, which we refer to as SERF. Our method entails creating a neural mesh representation by integrating multi-view algorithms with pre-trained 2D models. Building upon this representation, we introduce a novel surface rendering technique that preserves local information and is robust to deformation. Moreover, this representation forms the basis for achieving accurate and interactive 3D segmentation without requiring 3D supervision. Harnessing this representation facilitates a range of interactive 3D editing operations, encompassing tasks such as interactive geometry editing and texture painting. Extensive experiments and visualization examples of editing on both real and synthetic data demonstrate the superiority of our method on representation quality and editing ability.
Combining complementary sensor modalities is crucial to providing robust perception for safety-critical robotics applications such as autonomous driving (AD). Recent state-of-the-art camera-lidar fusion methods for AD rely on monocular depth estimation which is a notoriously difficult task compared to using depth information from the lidar directly. Here, we find that this approach does not leverage depth as expected and show that naively improving depth estimation does not lead to improvements in object detection performance and that, strikingly, removing depth estimation altogether does not degrade object detection performance. This suggests that relying on monocular depth could be an unnecessary architectural bottleneck during camera-lidar fusion. In this work, we introduce a novel fusion method that bypasses monocular depth estimation altogether and instead selects and fuses camera and lidar features in a bird's-eye-view grid using a simple attention mechanism. We show that our model can modulate its use of camera features based on the availability of lidar features and that it yields better 3D object detection on the nuScenes dataset than baselines relying on monocular depth estimation.
Video Question Answering (VideoQA) is a very attractive and challenging research direction aiming to understand complex semantics of heterogeneous data from two domains, i.e., the spatio-temporal video content and the word sequence in question. Although various attention mechanisms have been utilized to manage contextualized representations by modeling intra- and inter-modal relationships of the two modalities, one limitation of the predominant VideoQA methods is the lack of reasoning with event correlation, that is, sensing and analyzing relationships among abundant and informative events contained in the video. In this paper, we introduce the dense caption modality as a new auxiliary and distill event-correlated information from it to infer the correct answer. To this end, we propose a novel end-to-end trainable model, Event-Correlated Graph Neural Networks (EC-GNNs), to perform cross-modal reasoning over information from the three modalities (i.e., caption, video, and question). Besides the exploitation of a brand new modality, we employ cross-modal reasoning modules for explicitly modeling inter-modal relationships and aggregating relevant information across different modalities, and we propose a question-guided self-adaptive multi-modal fusion module to collect the question-oriented and event-correlated evidence through multi-step reasoning. We evaluate our model on two widely-used benchmark datasets and conduct an ablation study to justify the effectiveness of each proposed component.
This paper introduces a deep learning approach to dynamic spectrum access, leveraging the synergy of multi-modal image and spectrum data for the identification of potential transmitters. We consider an edge device equipped with a camera that is taking images of potential objects such as vehicles that may harbor transmitters. Recognizing the computational constraints and trust issues associated with on-device computation, we propose a collaborative system wherein the edge device communicates selectively processed information to a trusted receiver acting as a fusion center, where a decision is made to identify whether a potential transmitter is present, or not. To achieve this, we employ task-oriented communications, utilizing an encoder at the transmitter for joint source coding, channel coding, and modulation. This architecture efficiently transmits essential information of reduced dimension for object classification. Simultaneously, the transmitted signals may reflect off objects and return to the transmitter, allowing for the collection of target sensing data. Then the collected sensing data undergoes a second round of encoding at the transmitter, with the reduced-dimensional information communicated back to the fusion center through task-oriented communications. On the receiver side, a decoder performs the task of identifying a transmitter by fusing data received through joint sensing and task-oriented communications. The two encoders at the transmitter and the decoder at the receiver are jointly trained, enabling a seamless integration of image classification and wireless signal detection. Using AWGN and Rayleigh channel models, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, showcasing high accuracy in transmitter identification across diverse channel conditions while sustaining low latency in decision making.
The visual feature pyramid has proven its effectiveness and efficiency in target detection tasks. Yet, current methodologies tend to overly emphasize inter-layer feature interaction, neglecting the crucial aspect of intra-layer feature adjustment. Experience underscores the significant advantages of intra-layer feature interaction in enhancing target detection tasks. While some approaches endeavor to learn condensed intra-layer feature representations using attention mechanisms or visual transformers, they overlook the incorporation of global information interaction. This oversight results in increased false detections and missed targets.To address this critical issue, this paper introduces the Global Feature Pyramid Network (GFPNet), an augmented version of PAFPN that integrates global information for enhanced target detection. Specifically, we leverage a lightweight MLP to capture global feature information, utilize the VNC encoder to process these features, and employ a parallel learnable mechanism to extract intra-layer features from the input image. Building on this foundation, we retain the PAFPN method to facilitate inter-layer feature interaction, extracting rich feature details across various levels.Compared to conventional feature pyramids, GFPN not only effectively focuses on inter-layer feature information but also captures global feature details, fostering intra-layer feature interaction and generating a more comprehensive and impactful feature representation. GFPN consistently demonstrates performance improvements over object detection baselines.
Image harmonization is a crucial technique in image composition that aims to seamlessly match the background by adjusting the foreground of composite images. Current methods adopt either global-level or pixel-level feature matching. Global-level feature matching ignores the proximity prior, treating foreground and background as separate entities. On the other hand, pixel-level feature matching loses contextual information. Therefore, it is necessary to use the information from semantic maps that describe different objects to guide harmonization. In this paper, we propose Semantic-guided Region-aware Instance Normalization (SRIN) that can utilize the semantic segmentation maps output by a pre-trained Segment Anything Model (SAM) to guide the visual consistency learning of foreground and background features. Abundant experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method for image harmonization over state-of-the-art methods.
Recent research has shown that transformer networks can be used as differentiable search indexes by representing each document as a sequences of document ID tokens. These generative retrieval models cast the retrieval problem to a document ID generation problem for each given query. Despite their elegant design, existing generative retrieval models only perform well on artificially-constructed and small-scale collections. This has led to serious skepticism in the research community on their real-world impact. This paper represents an important milestone in generative retrieval research by showing, for the first time, that generative retrieval models can be trained to perform effectively on large-scale standard retrieval benchmarks. For doing so, we propose RIPOR- an optimization framework for generative retrieval that can be adopted by any encoder-decoder architecture. RIPOR is designed based on two often-overlooked fundamental design considerations in generative retrieval. First, given the sequential decoding nature of document ID generation, assigning accurate relevance scores to documents based on the whole document ID sequence is not sufficient. To address this issue, RIPOR introduces a novel prefix-oriented ranking optimization algorithm. Second, initial document IDs should be constructed based on relevance associations between queries and documents, instead of the syntactic and semantic information in the documents. RIPOR addresses this issue using a relevance-based document ID construction approach that quantizes relevance-based representations learned for documents. Evaluation on MSMARCO and TREC Deep Learning Track reveals that RIPOR surpasses state-of-the-art generative retrieval models by a large margin (e.g., 30.5% MRR improvements on MS MARCO Dev Set), and perform better on par with popular dense retrieval models.
The Spiking Neural Network (SNN), as one of the biologically inspired neural network infrastructures, has drawn increasing attention recently. It adopts binary spike activations to transmit information, thus the multiplications of activations and weights can be substituted by additions, which brings high energy efficiency. However, in the paper, we theoretically and experimentally prove that the binary spike activation map cannot carry enough information, thus causing information loss and resulting in accuracy decreasing. To handle the problem, we propose a ternary spike neuron to transmit information. The ternary spike neuron can also enjoy the event-driven and multiplication-free operation advantages of the binary spike neuron but will boost the information capacity. Furthermore, we also embed a trainable factor in the ternary spike neuron to learn the suitable spike amplitude, thus our SNN will adopt different spike amplitudes along layers, which can better suit the phenomenon that the membrane potential distributions are different along layers. To retain the efficiency of the vanilla ternary spike, the trainable ternary spike SNN will be converted to a standard one again via a re-parameterization technique in the inference. Extensive experiments with several popular network structures over static and dynamic datasets show that the ternary spike can consistently outperform state-of-the-art methods. The pooled data problem asks to identify the unknown labels of a set of items from condensed measurements. More precisely, given $n$ items, assume that each item has a label in $\cbc{0,1,\ldots, d}$, encoded via the ground-truth $\SIGMA$. We call the pooled data problem sparse if the number of non-zero entries of $\SIGMA$ scales as $k \sim n^{\theta}$ for $\theta \in (0,1)$. The information that is revealed about $\SIGMA$ comes from pooled measurements, each indicating how many items of each label are contained in the pool. The most basic question is to design a pooling scheme that uses as few pools as possible, while reconstructing $\SIGMA$ with high probability. Variants of the problem and its combinatorial ramifications have been studied for at least 35 years. However, the study of the modern question of \emph{efficient} inference of the labels has suggested a statistical-to-computational gap of order $\log n$ in the minimum number of pools needed for theoretically possible versus efficient inference. In this article, we resolve the question whether this $\log n$-gap is artificial or of a fundamental nature by the design of an efficient algorithm, called \algoname, based upon a novel pooling scheme on a number of pools very close to the information-theoretic threshold.
As deep neural networks are increasingly deployed in sensitive application domains, such as healthcare and security, it's necessary to understand what kind of sensitive information can be inferred from these models. Existing model-targeted attacks all assume the attacker has known the application domain or training data distribution, which plays an essential role in successful attacks. Can removing the domain information from model APIs protect models from these attacks? This paper studies this critical problem. Unfortunately, even with minimal knowledge, i.e., accessing the model as an unnamed function without leaking the meaning of input and output, the proposed adaptive domain inference attack (ADI) can still successfully estimate relevant subsets of training data. We show that the extracted relevant data can significantly improve, for instance, the performance of model-inversion attacks. Specifically, the ADI method utilizes a concept hierarchy built on top of a large collection of available public and private datasets and a novel algorithm to adaptively tune the likelihood of leaf concepts showing up in the unseen training data. The ADI attack not only extracts partial training data at the concept level, but also converges fast and requires much fewer target-model accesses than another domain inference attack, GDI.
