Joint Semantic-Native Communication and Inference via Minimal Simplicial Structures

In this work, we study the problem of semantic communication and inference, in which a student agent (i.e. mobile device) queries a teacher agent (i.e. cloud sever) to generate higher-order data semantics living in a simplicial complex. Specifically, the teacher first maps its data into a k-order simplicial complex and learns its high-order correlations. For effective communication and inference, the teacher seeks minimally sufficient and invariant semantic structures prior to conveying information. These minimal simplicial structures are found via judiciously removing simplices selected by the Hodge Laplacians without compromising the inference query accuracy. Subsequently, the student locally runs its own set of queries based on a masked simplicial convolutional autoencoder (SCAE) leveraging both local and remote teacher's knowledge. Numerical results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of improving inference query accuracy under different channel conditions and simplicial structures. Experiments on a coauthorship dataset show that removing simplices by ranking the Laplacian values yields a 85% reduction in payload size without sacrificing accuracy. Joint semantic communication and inference by masked SCAE improves query accuracy by 25% compared to local student based query and 15% compared to remote teacher based query. Finally, incorporating channel semantics is shown to effectively improve inference accuracy, notably at low SNR values.

On the Degrees of Freedom and Eigenfunctions of Line-of-Sight Holographic MIMO Communications

We consider a line-of-sight communication link between two holographic surfaces (HoloSs). We provide a closed-form expression for the number of effective degrees of freedom (eDoF), i.e., the number of orthogonal communication modes that can be established between the HoloSs. The framework can be applied to general network deployments beyond the widely studied paraxial setting. This is obtained by utilizing a quartic approximation for the wavefront of the electromagnetic waves, and by proving that the number of eDoF corresponds to an instance of Landau's eigenvalue problem applied to a bandlimited kernel determined by the quartic approximation of the wavefront. The proposed approach overcomes the limitations of the widely utilized parabolic approximation for the wavefront, which provides inaccurate estimates in non-paraxial deployments. We specialize the framework to typical network deployments, and provide analytical expressions for the optimal, according to Kolmogorov's $N$-width criterion, basis functions (communication waveforms) for optimal data encoding and decoding. With the aid of numerical analysis, we validate the accuracy of the closed-form expressions for the number of eDoF and waveforms.

Lip2Vec: Efficient and Robust Visual Speech Recognition via Latent-to-Latent Visual to Audio Representation Mapping

Visual Speech Recognition (VSR) differs from the common perception tasks as it requires deeper reasoning over the video sequence, even by human experts. Despite the recent advances in VSR, current approaches rely on labeled data to fully train or finetune their models predicting the target speech. This hinders their ability to generalize well beyond the training set and leads to performance degeneration under out-of-distribution challenging scenarios. Unlike previous works that involve auxiliary losses or complex training procedures and architectures, we propose a simple approach, named Lip2Vec that is based on learning a prior model. Given a robust visual speech encoder, this network maps the encoded latent representations of the lip sequence to their corresponding latents from the audio pair, which are sufficiently invariant for effective text decoding. The generated audio representation is then decoded to text using an off-the-shelf Audio Speech Recognition (ASR) model. The proposed model compares favorably with fully-supervised learning methods on the LRS3 dataset achieving 26 WER. Unlike SoTA approaches, our model keeps a reasonable performance on the VoxCeleb test set. We believe that reprogramming the VSR as an ASR task narrows the performance gap between the two and paves the way for more flexible formulations of lip reading.

Large Language Models for Telecom: Forthcoming Impact on the Industry

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as a transformative force, revolutionizing numerous fields well beyond the conventional domain of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and garnering unprecedented attention. As LLM technology continues to progress, the telecom industry is facing the prospect of its potential impact on its landscape. To elucidate these implications, we delve into the inner workings of LLMs, providing insights into their current capabilities and limitations. We also examine the use cases that can be readily implemented in the telecom industry, streamlining numerous tasks that currently hinder operational efficiency and demand significant manpower and engineering expertise. Furthermore, we uncover essential research directions that deal with the distinctive challenges of utilizing the LLMs within the telecom domain. Addressing these challenges represents a significant stride towards fully harnessing the potential of LLMs and unlocking their capabilities to the fullest extent within the telecom domain.

Terahertz Communications and Sensing for 6G and Beyond: A Comprehensive View

The next-generation wireless technologies, commonly referred to as the sixth generation (6G), are envisioned to support extreme communications capacity and in particular disruption in the network sensing capabilities. The terahertz (THz) band is one potential enabler for those due to the enormous unused frequency bands and the high spatial resolution enabled by both short wavelengths and bandwidths. Different from earlier surveys, this paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of the advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. Starting from the motivation and use cases, we survey the development and historical perspective of THz communications and sensing with the anticipated 6G requirements. We explore the radio propagation, channel modeling, and measurements for THz band. The transceiver requirements, architectures, technological challenges, and approaches together with means to compensate for the high propagation losses by appropriate antenna and beamforming solutions. We survey also several system technologies required by or beneficial for THz systems. The synergistic design of sensing and communications is explored with depth. Practical trials, demonstrations, and experiments are also summarized. The paper gives a holistic view of the current state of the art and highlights the issues and challenges that are open for further research towards 6G.

SecureFalcon: The Next Cyber Reasoning System for Cyber Security

Software vulnerabilities leading to various detriments such as crashes, data loss, and security breaches, significantly hinder the quality, affecting the market adoption of software applications and systems. Although traditional methods such as automated software testing, fault localization, and repair have been intensively studied, static analysis tools are most commonly used and have an inherent false positives rate, posing a solid challenge to developer productivity. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a promising solution to these persistent issues. Among these, FalconLLM has shown substantial potential in identifying intricate patterns and complex vulnerabilities, hence crucial in software vulnerability detection. In this paper, for the first time, FalconLLM is being fine-tuned for cybersecurity applications, thus introducing SecureFalcon, an innovative model architecture built upon FalconLLM. SecureFalcon is trained to differentiate between vulnerable and non-vulnerable C code samples. We build a new training dataset, FormAI, constructed thanks to Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and formal verification to evaluate its performance. SecureFalcon achieved an impressive 94% accuracy rate in detecting software vulnerabilities, emphasizing its significant potential to redefine software vulnerability detection methods in cybersecurity.

Revolutionizing Cyber Threat Detection with Large Language Models

Natural Language Processing (NLP) domain is experiencing a revolution due to the capabilities of Pre-trained Large Language Models ( LLMs), fueled by ground-breaking Transformers architecture, resulting into unprecedented advancements. Their exceptional aptitude for assessing probability distributions of text sequences is the primary catalyst for outstanding improvement of both the precision and efficiency of NLP models. This paper introduces for the first time SecurityLLM, a pre-trained language model designed for cybersecurity threats detection. The SecurityLLM model is articulated around two key generative elements: SecurityBERT and FalconLLM. SecurityBERT operates as a cyber threat detection mechanism, while FalconLLM is an incident response and recovery system. To the best of our knowledge, SecurityBERT represents the inaugural application of BERT in cyber threat detection. Despite the unique nature of the input data and features, such as the reduced significance of syntactic structures in content classification, the suitability of BERT for this duty demonstrates unexpected potential, thanks to our pioneering study. We reveal that a simple classification model, created from scratch, and consolidated with LLMs, exceeds the performance of established traditional Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methods in cyber threat detection, like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) or Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN). The experimental analysis, conducted using a collected cybersecurity dataset, proves that our SecurityLLM model can identify fourteen (14) different types of attacks with an overall accuracy of 98%

Reasoning over the Air: A Reasoning-based Implicit Semantic-Aware Communication Framework

Semantic-aware communication is a novel paradigm that draws inspiration from human communication focusing on the delivery of the meaning of messages. It has attracted significant interest recently due to its potential to improve the efficiency and reliability of communication and enhance users' QoE. Most existing works focus on transmitting and delivering the explicit semantic meaning that can be directly identified from the source signal. This paper investigates the implicit semantic-aware communication in which the hidden information that cannot be directly observed from the source signal must be recognized and interpreted by the intended users. To this end, a novel implicit semantic-aware communication (iSAC) architecture is proposed for representing, communicating, and interpreting the implicit semantic meaning between source and destination users. A projection-based semantic encoder is proposed to convert the high-dimensional graphical representation of explicit semantics into a low-dimensional semantic constellation space for efficient physical channel transmission. To enable the destination user to learn and imitate the implicit semantic reasoning process of source user, a generative adversarial imitation learning-based solution, called G-RML, is proposed. Different from existing communication solutions, the source user in G-RML does not focus only on sending as much of the useful messages as possible; but, instead, it tries to guide the destination user to learn a reasoning mechanism to map any observed explicit semantics to the corresponding implicit semantics that are most relevant to the semantic meaning. Compared to the existing solutions, our proposed G-RML requires much less communication and computational resources and scales well to the scenarios involving the communication of rich semantic meanings consisting of a large number of concepts and relations.

Large Language Models for Telecom: The Next Big Thing?

The evolution of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) constitutes a turning point in reshaping the future of technology in different aspects. Wireless networks in particular, with the blooming of self-evolving networks, represent a rich field for exploiting GenAI and reaping several benefits that can fundamentally change the way how wireless networks are designed and operated nowadays. To be specific, large language models (LLMs), a subfield of GenAI, are envisioned to open up a new era of autonomous wireless networks, in which a multimodal large model trained over various Telecom data, can be fine-tuned to perform several downstream tasks, eliminating the need for dedicated AI models for each task and paving the way for the realization of artificial general intelligence (AGI)-empowered wireless networks. In this article, we aim to unfold the opportunities that can be reaped from integrating LLMs into the Telecom domain. In particular, we aim to put a forward-looking vision on a new realm of possibilities and applications of LLMs in future wireless networks, defining directions for designing, training, testing, and deploying Telecom LLMs, and reveal insights on the associated theoretical and practical challenges.

Understanding Telecom Language Through Large Language Models

The recent progress of artificial intelligence (AI) opens up new frontiers in the possibility of automating many tasks involved in Telecom networks design, implementation, and deployment. This has been further pushed forward with the evolution of generative artificial intelligence (AI), including the emergence of large language models (LLMs), which is believed to be the cornerstone toward realizing self-governed, interactive AI agents. Motivated by this, in this paper, we aim to adapt the paradigm of LLMs to the Telecom domain. In particular, we fine-tune several LLMs including BERT, distilled BERT, RoBERTa and GPT-2, to the Telecom domain languages, and demonstrate a use case for identifying the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard working groups. We consider training the selected models on 3GPP technical documents (Tdoc) pertinent to years 2009-2019 and predict the Tdoc categories in years 2020-2023. The results demonstrate that fine-tuning BERT and RoBERTa model achieves 84.6% accuracy, while GPT-2 model achieves 83% in identifying 3GPP working groups. The distilled BERT model with around 50% less parameters achieves similar performance as others. This corroborates that fine-tuning pretrained LLM can effectively identify the categories of Telecom language. The developed framework shows a stepping stone towards realizing intent-driven and self-evolving wireless networks from Telecom languages, and paves the way for the implementation of generative AI in the Telecom domain.
