Creating visually pleasing stylized ink paintings from 3D models is a challenge in robotic manipulation. We propose a semi-automatic framework that can extract expressive strokes from 3D models and draw them in oriental ink painting styles by using a robotic arm. The framework consists of a simulation stage and a robotic drawing stage. In the simulation stage, geometrical contours were automatically extracted from a certain viewpoint and a neural network was employed to create simplified contours. Then, expressive digital strokes were generated after interactive editing according to user's aesthetic understanding. In the robotic drawing stage, an optimization method was presented for drawing smooth and physically consistent strokes to the digital strokes, and two oriental ink painting styles termed as Noutan (shade) and Kasure (scratchiness) were applied to the strokes by robotic control of a brush's translation, dipping and scraping. Unlike existing methods that concentrate on generating paintings from 2D images, our framework has the advantage of rendering stylized ink paintings from 3D models by using a consumer-grade robotic arm. We evaluate the proposed framework by taking 3 standard models and a user-defined model as examples. The results show that our framework is able to draw visually pleasing oriental ink paintings with expressive strokes.
Vision Transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated powerful representation ability in various visual tasks thanks to their intrinsic data-hungry nature. However, we unexpectedly find that ViTs perform vulnerably when applied to face recognition (FR) scenarios with extremely large datasets. We investigate the reasons for this phenomenon and discover that the existing data augmentation approach and hard sample mining strategy are incompatible with ViTs-based FR backbone due to the lack of tailored consideration on preserving face structural information and leveraging each local token information. To remedy these problems, this paper proposes a superior FR model called TransFace, which employs a patch-level data augmentation strategy named DPAP and a hard sample mining strategy named EHSM. Specially, DPAP randomly perturbs the amplitude information of dominant patches to expand sample diversity, which effectively alleviates the overfitting problem in ViTs. EHSM utilizes the information entropy in the local tokens to dynamically adjust the importance weight of easy and hard samples during training, leading to a more stable prediction. Multimodal medical data fusion has emerged as a transformative approach in smart healthcare, enabling a comprehensive understanding of patient health and personalized treatment plans. In this paper, a journey from data, information, and knowledge to wisdom (DIKW) is explored through multimodal fusion for smart healthcare. A comprehensive review of multimodal medical data fusion focuses on the integration of various data modalities are presented. It explores different approaches such as Feature selection, Rule-based systems, Machine learning, Deep learning, and Natural Language Processing for fusing and analyzing multimodal data. The paper also highlights the challenges associated with multimodal fusion in healthcare. By synthesizing the reviewed frameworks and insights, a generic framework for multimodal medical data fusion is proposed while aligning with the DIKW mechanism. Moreover, it discusses future directions aligned with the four pillars of healthcare: Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, and Participatory approaches based on the DIKW and the generic framework. The components from this comprehensive survey form the foundation for the successful implementation of multimodal fusion in smart healthcare. The findings of this survey can guide researchers and practitioners in leveraging the power of multimodal fusion with the approaches to revolutionize healthcare and improve patient outcomes.
In this paper, we focus on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to assist users in the creation of anime portraits, that is, converting rough sketches into anime portraits during their sketching process. The input is a sequence of incomplete freehand sketches that are gradually refined stroke by stroke, while the output is a sequence of high-quality anime portraits that correspond to the input sketches as guidance. Although recent GANs can generate high quality images, it is a challenging problem to maintain the high quality of generated images from sketches with a low degree of completion due to ill-posed problems in conditional image generation. Even with the latest sketch-to-image (S2I) technology, it is still difficult to create high-quality images from incomplete rough sketches for anime portraits since anime style tend to be more abstract than in realistic style. To address this issue, we adopt a latent space exploration of StyleGAN with a two-stage training strategy. We consider the input strokes of a freehand sketch to correspond to edge information-related attributes in the latent structural code of StyleGAN, and term the matching between strokes and these attributes stroke-level disentanglement. In the first stage, we trained an image encoder with the pre-trained StyleGAN model as a teacher encoder. In the second stage, we simulated the drawing process of the generated images without any additional data (labels) and trained the sketch encoder for incomplete progressive sketches to generate high-quality portrait images with feature alignment to the disentangled representations in the teacher encoder. We verified the proposed progressive S2I system with both qualitative and quantitative evaluations and achieved high-quality anime portraits from incomplete progressive sketches. Our user study proved its effectiveness in art creation assistance for the anime style.
Self-attention-based models have achieved remarkable progress in short-text mining. However, the quadratic computational complexities restrict their application in long text processing. Prior works have adopted the chunking strategy to divide long documents into chunks and stack a self-attention backbone with the recurrent structure to extract semantic representation. Such an approach disables parallelization of the attention mechanism, significantly increasing the training cost and raising hardware requirements. Revisiting the self-attention mechanism and the recurrent structure, this paper proposes a novel long-document encoding model, Recurrent Attention Network (RAN), to enable the recurrent operation of self-attention. Combining the advantages from both sides, the well-designed RAN is capable of extracting global semantics in both token-level and document-level representations, making it inherently compatible with both sequential and classification tasks, respectively. Furthermore, RAN is computationally scalable as it supports parallelization on long document processing. Extensive experiments demonstrate the long-text encoding ability of the proposed RAN model on both classification and sequential tasks, showing its potential for a wide range of applications.
Machine unlearning (MU) is gaining increasing attention due to the need to remove or modify predictions made by machine learning (ML) models. While training models have become more efficient and accurate, the importance of unlearning previously learned information has become increasingly significant in fields such as privacy, security, and fairness. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of MU, covering current state-of-the-art techniques and approaches, including data deletion, perturbation, and model updates. In addition, commonly used metrics and datasets are also presented. The paper also highlights the challenges that need to be addressed, including attack sophistication, standardization, transferability, interpretability, training data, and resource constraints. The contributions of this paper include discussions about the potential benefits of MU and its future directions. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the need for researchers and practitioners to continue exploring and refining unlearning techniques to ensure that ML models can adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining user trust. The importance of unlearning is further highlighted in making Artificial Intelligence (AI) more trustworthy and transparent, especially with the increasing importance of AI in various domains that involve large amounts of personal user data.
Searching by image is popular yet still challenging due to the extensive interference arose from i) data variations (e.g., background, pose, visual angle, brightness) of real-world captured images and ii) similar images in the query dataset. This paper studies a practically meaningful problem of beauty product retrieval (BPR) by neural networks. We broadly extract different types of image features, and raise an intriguing question that whether these features are beneficial to i) suppress data variations of real-world captured images, and ii) distinguish one image from others which look very similar but are intrinsically different beauty products in the dataset, therefore leading to an enhanced capability of BPR. To answer it, we present a novel variable-attention neural network to understand the combination of multiple features (termed VM-Net) of beauty product images. Considering that there are few publicly released training datasets for BPR, we establish a new dataset with more than one million images classified into more than 20K categories to improve both the generalization and anti-interference abilities of VM-Net and other methods. We verify the performance of VM-Net and its competitors on the benchmark dataset Perfect-500K, where VM-Net shows clear improvements over the competitors in terms of MAP@7. The source code and dataset will be released upon publication.
3D model reconstruction from a single image has achieved great progress with the recent deep generative models. However, the conventional reconstruction approaches with template mesh deformation and implicit fields have difficulty in reconstructing non-watertight 3D mesh models, such as garments. In contrast to image-based modeling, the sketch-based approach can help users generate 3D models to meet the design intentions from hand-drawn sketches. In this study, we propose Sketch2Cloth, a sketch-based 3D garment generation system using the unsigned distance fields from the user's sketch input. Sketch2Cloth first estimates the unsigned distance function of the target 3D model from the sketch input, and extracts the mesh from the estimated field with Marching Cubes. We also provide the model editing function to modify the generated mesh. We verified the proposed Sketch2Cloth with quantitative evaluations on garment generation and editing with a state-of-the-art approach.
