Facial super-resolution/hallucination is an important area of research that seeks to enhance low-resolution facial images for a variety of applications. While Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown promise in this area, their ability to adapt to new, unseen data remains a challenge. This paper addresses this problem by proposing an incremental super-resolution using GANs with knowledge distillation (ISR-KD) for face to cartoon. Previous research in this area has not investigated incremental learning, which is critical for real-world applications where new data is continually being generated. The proposed ISR-KD aims to develop a novel unified framework for facial super-resolution that can handle different settings, including different types of faces such as cartoon face and various levels of detail. To achieve this, a GAN-based super-resolution network was pre-trained on the CelebA dataset and then incrementally trained on the iCartoonFace dataset, using knowledge distillation to retain performance on the CelebA test set while improving the performance on iCartoonFace test set. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of knowledge distillation in incrementally adding capability to the model for cartoon face super-resolution while retaining the learned knowledge for facial hallucination tasks in GANs.
Head-mounted displays (HMDs) serve as indispensable devices for observing extended reality (XR) environments and virtual content. However, HMDs present an obstacle to external recording techniques as they block the upper face of the user. This limitation significantly affects social XR applications, specifically teleconferencing, where facial features and eye gaze information play a vital role in creating an immersive user experience. In this study, we propose a new network for expression-aware video inpainting for HMD removal (EVI-HRnet) based on generative adversarial networks (GANs). Our model effectively fills in missing information with regard to facial landmarks and a single occlusion-free reference image of the user. The framework and its components ensure the preservation of the user's identity across frames using the reference frame. To further improve the level of realism of the inpainted output, we introduce a novel facial expression recognition (FER) loss function for emotion preservation. Our results demonstrate the remarkable capability of the proposed framework to remove HMDs from facial videos while maintaining the subject's facial expression and identity. Moreover, the outputs exhibit temporal consistency along the inpainted frames. This lightweight framework presents a practical approach for HMD occlusion removal, with the potential to enhance various collaborative XR applications without the need for additional hardware.
Face swapping has gained significant attention for its varied applications. The majority of previous face swapping approaches have relied on the seesaw game training scheme, which often leads to the instability of the model training and results in undesired samples with blended identities due to the target identity leakage problem. This paper introduces the Shape Agnostic Masked AutoEncoder (SAMAE) training scheme, a novel self-supervised approach designed to enhance face swapping model training. Our training scheme addresses the limitations of traditional training methods by circumventing the conventional seesaw game and introducing clear ground truth through its self-reconstruction training regime. It effectively mitigates identity leakage by masking facial regions of the input images and utilizing learned disentangled identity and non-identity features. Additionally, we tackle the shape misalignment problem with new techniques including perforation confusion and random mesh scaling, and establishes a new state-of-the-art, surpassing other baseline methods, preserving both identity and non-identity attributes, without sacrificing on either aspect.
In this work, we focus on exploring explicit fine-grained control of generative facial image editing, all while generating faithful and consistent personalized facial appearances. We identify the key challenge of this task as the exploration of disentangled conditional control in the generation process, and accordingly propose a novel diffusion-based framework, named DisControlFace, comprising two decoupled components. Specifically, we leverage an off-the-shelf diffusion reconstruction model as the backbone and freeze its pre-trained weights, which helps to reduce identity shift and recover editing-unrelated details of the input image. Furthermore, we construct a parallel control network that is compatible with the reconstruction backbone to generate spatial control conditions based on estimated explicit face parameters. Finally, we further reformulate the training pipeline into a masked-autoencoding form to effectively achieve disentangled training of our DisControlFace. Our DisControlNet can perform robust editing on any facial image through training on large-scale 2D in-the-wild portraits and also supports low-cost fine-tuning with few additional images to further learn diverse personalized priors of a specific person. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DisControlFace can generate realistic facial images corresponding to various face control conditions, while significantly improving the preservation of the personalized facial details.
3D facial animation is often produced by manipulating facial deformation models (or rigs), that are traditionally parameterized by expression controls. A key component that is usually overlooked is expression 'style', as in, how a particular expression is performed. Although it is common to define a semantic basis of expressions that characters can perform, most characters perform each expression in their own style. To date, style is usually entangled with the expression, and it is not possible to transfer the style of one character to another when considering facial animation. We present a new face model, based on a data-driven implicit neural physics model, that can be driven by both expression and style separately. At the core, we present a framework for learning implicit physics-based actuations for multiple subjects simultaneously, trained on a few arbitrary performance capture sequences from a small set of identities. Once trained, our method allows generalized physics-based facial animation for any of the trained identities, extending to unseen performances. Furthermore, it grants control over the animation style, enabling style transfer from one character to another or blending styles of different characters. Lastly, as a physics-based model, it is capable of synthesizing physical effects, such as collision handling, setting our method apart from conventional approaches.
We concentrate on a novel human-centric image synthesis task, that is, given only one reference facial photograph, it is expected to generate specific individual images with diverse head positions, poses, and facial expressions in different contexts. To accomplish this goal, we argue that our generative model should be capable of the following favorable characteristics: (1) a strong visual and semantic understanding of our world and human society for basic object and human image generation. (2) generalizable identity preservation ability. (3) flexible and fine-grained head control. Recently, large pre-trained text-to-image diffusion models have shown remarkable results, serving as a powerful generative foundation. As a basis, we aim to unleash the above two capabilities of the pre-trained model. In this work, we present a new framework named CapHuman. We embrace the ``encode then learn to align" paradigm, which enables generalizable identity preservation for new individuals without cumbersome tuning at inference. CapHuman encodes identity features and then learns to align them into the latent space. Moreover, we introduce the 3D facial prior to equip our model with control over the human head in a flexible and 3D-consistent manner. Extensive qualitative and quantitative analyses demonstrate our CapHuman can produce well-identity-preserved, photo-realistic, and high-fidelity portraits with content-rich representations and various head renditions, superior to established baselines. Recent generative-prior-based methods have shown promising blind face restoration performance. They usually project the degraded images to the latent space and then decode high-quality faces either by single-stage latent optimization or directly from the encoding. Generating fine-grained facial details faithful to inputs remains a challenging problem. Most existing methods produce either overly smooth outputs or alter the identity as they attempt to balance between generation and reconstruction. This may be attributed to the typical trade-off between quality and resolution in the latent space. If the latent space is highly compressed, the decoded output is more robust to degradations but shows worse fidelity. On the other hand, a more flexible latent space can capture intricate facial details better, but is extremely difficult to optimize for highly degraded faces using existing techniques. To address these issues, we introduce a diffusion-based-prior inside a VQGAN architecture that focuses on learning the distribution over uncorrupted latent embeddings. With such knowledge, we iteratively recover the clean embedding conditioning on the degraded counterpart. Furthermore, to ensure the reverse diffusion trajectory does not deviate from the underlying identity, we train a separate Identity Recovery Network and use its output to constrain the reverse diffusion process. Specifically, using a learnable latent mask, we add gradients from a face-recognition network to a subset of latent features that correlates with the finer identity-related details in the pixel space, leaving the other features untouched. Disentanglement between perception and fidelity in the latent space allows us to achieve the best of both worlds. We perform extensive evaluations on multiple real and synthetic datasets to validate the superiority of our approach.
With the increased capabilities at the edge (e.g., mobile device) and more stringent privacy requirement, it becomes a recent trend for deep learning-enabled applications to pre-process sensitive raw data at the edge and transmit the features to the backend cloud for further processing. A typical application is to run machine learning (ML) services on facial images collected from different individuals. To prevent identity theft, conventional methods commonly rely on an adversarial game-based approach to shed the identity information from the feature. However, such methods can not defend against adaptive attacks, in which an attacker takes a countermove against a known defence strategy. We propose Crafter, a feature crafting mechanism deployed at the edge, to protect the identity information from adaptive model inversion attacks while ensuring the ML tasks are properly carried out in the cloud. The key defence strategy is to mislead the attacker to a non-private prior from which the attacker gains little about the private identity. In this case, the crafted features act like poison training samples for attackers with adaptive model updates. Experimental results indicate that Crafter successfully defends both basic and possible adaptive attacks, which can not be achieved by state-of-the-art adversarial game-based methods.
Human health can be critically affected by cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, arrhythmias, and stroke. Heart rate and blood pressure are important biometric information for the monitoring of cardiovascular system and early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Existing methods for estimating the heart rate are based on electrocardiography and photoplethyomography, which require contacting the sensor to the skin surface. Moreover, catheter and cuff-based methods for measuring blood pressure cause inconvenience and have limited applicability. Therefore, in this thesis, we propose a vision-based method for estimating the heart rate and blood pressure. This thesis proposes a 2-stage deep learning framework consisting of a dual remote photoplethysmography network (DRP-Net) and bounded blood pressure network (BBP-Net). In the first stage, DRP-Net infers remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) signals for the acral and facial regions, and these phase-shifted rPPG signals are utilized to estimate the heart rate. In the second stage, BBP-Net integrates temporal features and analyzes phase discrepancy between the acral and facial rPPG signals to estimate SBP and DBP values. To improve the accuracy of estimating the heart rate, we employed a data augmentation method based on a frame interpolation model. Moreover, we designed BBP-Net to infer blood pressure within a predefined range by incorporating a scaled sigmoid function. Our method resulted in estimating the heart rate with the mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.78 BPM, reducing the MAE by 34.31 % compared to the recent method, on the MMSE-HR dataset. The MAE for estimating the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were 10.19 mmHg and 7.09 mmHg. On the V4V dataset, the MAE for the heart rate, SBP, and DBP were 3.83 BPM, 13.64 mmHg, and 9.4 mmHg, respectively.
Over recent years, diffusion models have facilitated significant advancements in video generation. Yet, the creation of face-related videos still confronts issues such as low facial fidelity, lack of frame consistency, limited editability and uncontrollable human poses. To address these challenges, we introduce a facial animation generation method that enhances both face identity fidelity and editing capabilities while ensuring frame consistency. This approach incorporates the concept of an anchor frame to counteract the degradation of generative ability in original text-to-image models when incorporating a motion module. We propose two strategies towards this objective: training-free and training-based anchor frame methods. Our method's efficacy has been validated on multiple representative DreamBooth and LoRA models, delivering substantial improvements over the original outcomes in terms of facial fidelity, text-to-image editability, and video motion. Moreover, we introduce conditional control using a 3D parametric face model to capture accurate facial movements and expressions. This solution augments the creative possibilities for facial animation generation through the integration of multiple control signals.
