Wrap-Up: a Trainable Discourse Module for Information Extraction

The vast amounts of on-line text now available have led to renewed interest in information extraction (IE) systems that analyze unrestricted text, producing a structured representation of selected information from the text. This paper presents a novel approach that uses machine learning to acquire knowledge for some of the higher level IE processing. Wrap-Up is a trainable IE discourse component that makes intersentential inferences and identifies logical relations among information extracted from the text. Previous corpus-based approaches were limited to lower level processing such as part-of-speech tagging, lexical disambiguation, and dictionary construction. Wrap-Up is fully trainable, and not only automatically decides what classifiers are needed, but even derives the feature set for each classifier automatically. Performance equals that of a partially trainable discourse module requiring manual customization for each domain.

Entity Recognition and Relation Extraction from Scientific and Technical Texts in Russian

This paper is devoted to the study of methods for information extraction (entity recognition and relation classification) from scientific texts on information technology. Scientific publications provide valuable information into cutting-edge scientific advances, but efficient processing of increasing amounts of data is a time-consuming task. In this paper, several modifications of methods for the Russian language are proposed. It also includes the results of experiments comparing a keyword extraction method, vocabulary method, and some methods based on neural networks. Text collections for these tasks exist for the English language and are actively used by the scientific community, but at present, such datasets in Russian are not publicly available. In this paper, we present a corpus of scientific texts in Russian, RuSERRC. This dataset consists of 1600 unlabeled documents and 80 labeled with entities and semantic relations (6 relation types were considered). The dataset and models are available at We hope they can be useful for research purposes and development of information extraction systems.

A Text Extraction-Based Smart Knowledge Graph Composition for Integrating Lessons Learned during the Microchip Design

The production of microchips is a complex and thus well documented process. Therefore, available textual data about the production can be overwhelming in terms of quantity. This affects the visibility and retrieval of a certain piece of information when it is most needed. In this paper, we propose a dynamic approach to interlink the information extracted from multisource production-relevant documents through the creation of a knowledge graph. This graph is constructed in order to support searchability and enhance user's access to large-scale production information. Text mining methods are firstly utilized to extract data from multiple documentation sources. Document relations are then mined and extracted for the composition of the knowledge graph. Graph search functionality is then supported with a recommendation use-case to enhance users' access to information that is related to the initial documents. The proposed approach is tailored to and tested on microchip design-relevant documents. It enhances the visibility and findability of previous design-failure-cases during the process of a new chip design.

CasEE: A Joint Learning Framework with Cascade Decoding for Overlapping Event Extraction

Event extraction (EE) is a crucial information extraction task that aims to extract event information in texts. Most existing methods assume that events appear in sentences without overlaps, which are not applicable to the complicated overlapping event extraction. This work systematically studies the realistic event overlapping problem, where a word may serve as triggers with several types or arguments with different roles. To tackle the above problem, we propose a novel joint learning framework with cascade decoding for overlapping event extraction, termed as CasEE. Particularly, CasEE sequentially performs type detection, trigger extraction and argument extraction, where the overlapped targets are extracted separately conditioned on the specific former prediction. All the subtasks are jointly learned in a framework to capture dependencies among the subtasks. The evaluation on a public event extraction benchmark FewFC demonstrates that CasEE achieves significant improvements on overlapping event extraction over previous competitive methods.

Supervised Opinion Aspect Extraction by Exploiting Past Extraction Results

One of the key tasks of sentiment analysis of product reviews is to extract product aspects or features that users have expressed opinions on. In this work, we focus on using supervised sequence labeling as the base approach to performing the task. Although several extraction methods using sequence labeling methods such as Conditional Random Fields (CRF) and Hidden Markov Models (HMM) have been proposed, we show that this supervised approach can be significantly improved by exploiting the idea of concept sharing across multiple domains. For example, "screen" is an aspect in iPhone, but not only iPhone has a screen, many electronic devices have screens too. When "screen" appears in a review of a new domain (or product), it is likely to be an aspect too. Knowing this information enables us to do much better extraction in the new domain. This paper proposes a novel extraction method exploiting this idea in the context of supervised sequence labeling. Experimental results show that it produces markedly better results than without using the past information.

MedFilter: Improving Extraction of Task-relevant Utterances through Integration of Discourse Structure and Ontological Knowledge

Information extraction from conversational data is particularly challenging because the task-centric nature of conversation allows for effective communication of implicit information by humans, but is challenging for machines. The challenges may differ between utterances depending on the role of the speaker within the conversation, especially when relevant expertise is distributed asymmetrically across roles. Further, the challenges may also increase over the conversation as more shared context is built up through information communicated implicitly earlier in the dialogue. In this paper, we propose the novel modeling approach MedFilter, which addresses these insights in order to increase performance at identifying and categorizing task-relevant utterances, and in so doing, positively impacts performance at a downstream information extraction task. We evaluate this approach on a corpus of nearly 7,000 doctor-patient conversations where MedFilter is used to identify medically relevant contributions to the discussion (achieving a 10% improvement over SOTA baselines in terms of area under the PR curve). Identifying task-relevant utterances benefits downstream medical processing, achieving improvements of 15%, 105%, and 23% respectively for the extraction of symptoms, medications, and complaints.

Event Arguments Extraction via Dilate Gated Convolutional Neural Network with Enhanced Local Features

Event Extraction plays an important role in information-extraction to understand the world. Event extraction could be split into two subtasks: one is event trigger extraction, the other is event arguments extraction. However, the F-Score of event arguments extraction is much lower than that of event trigger extraction, i.e. in the most recent work, event trigger extraction achieves 80.7%, while event arguments extraction achieves only 58%. In pipelined structures, the difficulty of event arguments extraction lies in its lack of classification feature, and the much higher computation consumption. In this work, we proposed a novel Event Extraction approach based on multi-layer Dilate Gated Convolutional Neural Network (EE-DGCNN) which has fewer parameters. In addition, enhanced local information is incorporated into word features, to assign event arguments roles for triggers predicted by the first subtask. The numerical experiments demonstrated significant performance improvement beyond state-of-art event extraction approaches on real-world datasets. Further analysis of extraction procedure is presented, as well as experiments are conducted to analyze impact factors related to the performance improvement.

Bilingual Terminology Extraction Using Multi-level Termhood

Purpose: Terminology is the set of technical words or expressions used in specific contexts, which denotes the core concept in a formal discipline and is usually applied in the fields of machine translation, information retrieval, information extraction and text categorization, etc. Bilingual terminology extraction plays an important role in the application of bilingual dictionary compilation, bilingual Ontology construction, machine translation and cross-language information retrieval etc. This paper addresses the issues of monolingual terminology extraction and bilingual term alignment based on multi-level termhood. Design/methodology/approach: A method based on multi-level termhood is proposed. The new method computes the termhood of the terminology candidate as well as the sentence that includes the terminology by the comparison of the corpus. Since terminologies and general words usually have differently distribution in the corpus, termhood can also be used to constrain and enhance the performance of term alignment when aligning bilingual terms on the parallel corpus. In this paper, bilingual term alignment based on termhood constraints is presented. Findings: Experiment results show multi-level termhood can get better performance than existing method for terminology extraction. If termhood is used as constrain factor, the performance of bilingual term alignment can be improved.

WASE: Learning When to Attend for Speaker Extraction in Cocktail Party Environments

In the speaker extraction problem, it is found that additional information from the target speaker contributes to the tracking and extraction of the target speaker, which includes voiceprint, lip movement, facial expression, and spatial information. However, no one cares for the cue of sound onset, which has been emphasized in the auditory scene analysis and psychology. Inspired by it, we explicitly modeled the onset cue and verified the effectiveness in the speaker extraction task. We further extended to the onset/offset cues and got performance improvement. From the perspective of tasks, our onset/offset-based model completes the composite task, a complementary combination of speaker extraction and speaker-dependent voice activity detection. We also combined voiceprint with onset/offset cues. Voiceprint models voice characteristics of the target while onset/offset models the start/end information of the speech. From the perspective of auditory scene analysis, the combination of two perception cues can promote the integrity of the auditory object. The experiment results are also close to state-of-the-art performance, using nearly half of the parameters.
