Crowd localization is to predict each instance head position in crowd scenarios. Since the distance of instances being to the camera are variant, there exists tremendous gaps among scales of instances within an image, which is called the intrinsic scale shift. The core reason of intrinsic scale shift being one of the most essential issues in crowd localization is that it is ubiquitous in crowd scenes and makes scale distribution chaotic. To this end, the paper concentrates on access to tackle the chaos of the scale distribution incurred by intrinsic scale shift. We propose Gaussian Mixture Scope (GMS) to regularize the chaotic scale distribution. Concretely, the GMS utilizes a Gaussian mixture distribution to adapt to scale distribution and decouples the mixture model into sub-normal distributions to regularize the chaos within the sub-distributions. Then, an alignment is introduced to regularize the chaos among sub-distributions. However, despite that GMS is effective in regularizing the data distribution, it amounts to dislodging the hard samples in training set, which incurs overfitting. We assert that it is blamed on the block of transferring the latent knowledge exploited by GMS from data to model. Therefore, a Scoped Teacher playing a role of bridge in knowledge transform is proposed. What' s more, the consistency regularization is also introduced to implement knowledge transform. To that effect, the further constraints are deployed on Scoped Teacher to derive feature consistence between teacher and student end. With proposed GMS and Scoped Teacher implemented on five mainstream datasets of crowd localization, the extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our work. Moreover, comparing with existing crowd locators, our work achieves state-of-the-art via F1-meansure comprehensively on five datasets.
Hyperspectral image produces high spectral resolution at the sacrifice of spatial resolution. Without reducing the spectral resolution, improving the resolution in the spatial domain is a very challenging problem. Motivated by the discovery that hyperspectral image exhibits high similarity between adjacent bands in a large spectral range, in this paper, we explore a new structure for hyperspectral image super-resolution (DualSR), leading to a dual-stage design, i.e., coarse stage and fine stage. In coarse stage, five bands with high similarity in a certain spectral range are divided into three groups, and the current band is guided to study the potential knowledge. Under the action of alternative spectral fusion mechanism, the coarse SR image is super-resolved in band-by-band. In order to build model from a global perspective, an enhanced back-projection method via spectral angle constraint is developed in fine stage to learn the content of spatial-spectral consistency, dramatically improving the performance gain. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed coarse stage and fine stage. Besides, our network produces state-of-the-art results against existing works in terms of spatial reconstruction and spectral fidelity.
Transformers trained with self-supervised learning using self-distillation loss (DINO) have been shown to produce attention maps that highlight salient foreground objects. In this paper, we demonstrate a graph-based approach that uses the self-supervised transformer features to discover an object from an image. Visual tokens are viewed as nodes in a weighted graph with edges representing a connectivity score based on the similarity of tokens. Foreground objects can then be segmented using a normalized graph-cut to group self-similar regions. We solve the graph-cut problem using spectral clustering with generalized eigen-decomposition and show that the second smallest eigenvector provides a cutting solution since its absolute value indicates the likelihood that a token belongs to a foreground object. Despite its simplicity, this approach significantly boosts the performance of unsupervised object discovery: we improve over the recent state of the art LOST by a margin of 6.9%, 8.1%, and 8.1% respectively on the VOC07, VOC12, and COCO20K. The performance can be further improved by adding a second stage class-agnostic detector (CAD). Our proposed method can be easily extended to unsupervised saliency detection and weakly supervised object detection. For unsupervised saliency detection, we improve IoU for 4.9%, 5.2%, 12.9% on ECSSD, DUTS, DUT-OMRON respectively compared to previous state of the art. For weakly supervised object detection, we achieve competitive performance on CUB and ImageNet.
Program synthesis aims to {\it automatically} find programs from an underlying programming language that satisfy a given specification. While this has the potential to revolutionize computing, how to search over the vast space of programs efficiently is an unsolved challenge in program synthesis. In cases where large programs are required for a solution, it is generally believed that {\it stochastic} search has advantages over other classes of search techniques. Unfortunately, existing stochastic program synthesizers do not meet this expectation very well, suffering from the scalability issue. Here we propose a new framework for stochastic program synthesis, called iterative genetic improvement to overcome this problem, a technique inspired by the practice of the software development process. The key idea of iterative genetic improvement is to apply genetic improvement to improve a current reference program, and then iteratively replace the reference program by the best program found. Compared to traditional stochastic synthesis approaches, iterative genetic improvement can build up the complexity of programs incrementally in a more robust way. We evaluate the approach on two program synthesis domains: list manipulation and string transformation. Our empirical results indicate that this method has considerable advantages over several representative stochastic program synthesizer techniques, both in terms of scalability and of solution quality.
In this paper we introduce Shackleton as a generalized framework enabling the application of linear genetic programming -- a technique under the umbrella of evolutionary algorithms -- to a variety of use cases. We also explore here a novel application for this class of methods: optimizing sequences of LLVM optimization passes. The algorithm underpinning Shackleton is discussed, with an emphasis on the effects of different features unique to the framework when applied to LLVM pass sequences. Combined with analysis of different hyperparameter settings, we report the results on automatically optimizing pass sequences using Shackleton for two software applications at differing complexity levels. Finally, we reflect on the advantages and limitations of our current implementation and lay out a path for further improvements. These improvements aim to surpass hand-crafted solutions with an automatic discovery method for an optimal pass sequence.
Real-world data often exhibits long tail distributions with heavy class imbalance, where the majority classes can dominate the training process and alter the decision boundaries of the minority classes. Recently, researchers have investigated the potential of supervised contrastive learning for long-tailed recognition, and demonstrated that it provides a strong performance gain. In this paper, we show that while supervised contrastive learning can help improve performance, past baselines suffer from poor uniformity brought in by imbalanced data distribution. This poor uniformity manifests in samples from the minority class having poor separability in the feature space. To address this problem, we propose targeted supervised contrastive learning (TSC), which improves the uniformity of the feature distribution on the hypersphere. TSC first generates a set of targets uniformly distributed on a hypersphere. It then makes the features of different classes converge to these distinct and uniformly distributed targets during training. This forces all classes, including minority classes, to maintain a uniform distribution in the feature space, improves class boundaries, and provides better generalization even in the presence of long-tail data. Experiments on multiple datasets show that TSC achieves state-of-the-art performance on long-tailed recognition tasks.
Existing real-time text detectors reconstruct text contours by shrink-masks directly, which simplifies the framework and can make the model run fast. However, the strong dependence on predicted shrink-masks leads to unstable detection results. Moreover, the discrimination of shrink-masks is a pixelwise prediction task. Supervising the network by shrink-masks only will lose much semantic context, which leads to the false detection of shrink-masks. To address these problems, we construct an efficient text detection network, Adaptive Shrink-Mask for Text Detection (ASMTD), which improves the accuracy during training and reduces the complexity of the inference process. At first, the Adaptive Shrink-Mask (ASM) is proposed to represent texts by shrink-masks and independent adaptive offsets. It weakens the coupling of texts to shrink-masks, which improves the robustness of detection results. Then, the Super-pixel Window (SPW) is designed to supervise the network. It utilizes the surroundings of each pixel to improve the reliability of predicted shrink-masks and does not appear during testing. In the end, a lightweight feature merging branch is constructed to reduce the computational cost. As demonstrated in the experiments, our method is superior to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in both detection accuracy and speed on multiple benchmarks.
Indoor scene images usually contain scattered objects and various scene layouts, which make RGB-D scene classification a challenging task. Existing methods still have limitations for classifying scene images with great spatial variability. Thus, how to extract local patch-level features effectively using only image labels is still an open problem for RGB-D scene recognition. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework for RGB-D scene recognition, which adaptively selects important local features to capture the great spatial variability of scene images. Specifically, we design a differentiable local feature selection (DLFS) module, which can extract the appropriate number of key local scenerelated features. Discriminative local theme-level and object-level representations can be selected with the DLFS module from the spatially-correlated multi-modal RGB-D features. We take advantage of the correlation between RGB and depth modalities to provide more cues for selecting local features. To ensure that discriminative local features are selected, the variational mutual information maximization loss is proposed. Additionally, the DLFS module can be easily extended to select local features of different scales. By concatenating the local-orderless and global structured multi-modal features, the proposed framework can achieve state-of-the-art performance on public RGB-D scene recognition datasets.
The rapid development in visual crowd analysis shows a trend to count people by positioning or even detecting, rather than simply summing a density map. It also enlightens us back to the essence of the field, detection to count, which can give more abundant crowd information and has more practical applications. However, some recent work on crowd localization and detection has two limitations: 1) The typical detection methods can not handle the dense crowds and a large variation in scale; 2) The density map heuristic methods suffer from performance deficiency in position and box prediction, especially in high density or large-size crowds. In this paper, we devise a tailored baseline for dense crowds location, detection, and counting from a new perspective, named as LDC-Net for convenience, which has the following features: 1) A strong but minimalist paradigm to detect objects by only predicting a location map and a size map, which endows an ability to detect in a scene with any capacity ($0 \sim 10,000+$ persons); 2) Excellent cross-scale ability in facing a large variation, such as the head ranging in $0 \sim 100,000+$ pixels; 3) Achieve superior performance in location and box prediction tasks, as well as a competitive counting performance compared with the density-based methods. Finally, the source code and pre-trained models will be released.
