In this paper, we address a significant gap in the field of neuroimaging by introducing the largest-to-date public benchmark, BvEM, designed specifically for cortical blood vessel segmentation in Volume Electron Microscopy (VEM) images. The intricate relationship between cerebral blood vessels and neural function underscores the vital role of vascular analysis in understanding brain health. While imaging techniques at macro and mesoscales have garnered substantial attention and resources, the microscale VEM imaging, capable of revealing intricate vascular details, has lacked the necessary benchmarking infrastructure. As researchers delve deeper into the microscale intricacies of cerebral vasculature, our BvEM benchmark represents a critical step toward unraveling the mysteries of neurovascular coupling and its impact on brain function and pathology. The BvEM dataset is based on VEM image volumes from three mammal species: adult mouse, macaque, and human. We standardized the resolution, addressed imaging variations, and meticulously annotated blood vessels through semi-automatic, manual, and quality control processes, ensuring high-quality 3D segmentation. Furthermore, we developed a zero-shot cortical blood vessel segmentation method named TriSAM, which leverages the powerful segmentation model SAM for 3D segmentation. To lift SAM from 2D segmentation to 3D volume segmentation, TriSAM employs a multi-seed tracking framework, leveraging the reliability of certain image planes for tracking while using others to identify potential turning points. This approach, consisting of Tri-Plane selection, SAM-based tracking, and recursive redirection, effectively achieves long-term 3D blood vessel segmentation without model training or fine-tuning. Experimental results show that TriSAM achieved superior performances on the BvEM benchmark across three species.
With the breakthrough of multi-modal large language models, answering complex visual questions that demand advanced reasoning abilities and world knowledge has become a much more important testbed for developing AI models than ever. However, equipping AI models with robust cross-modality reasoning ability remains challenging since the cognition scheme of humans has not been understood systematically. In this paper, we believe that if we can collect visual clues in the given image as much as possible, we will recognize the image more accurately, understand the question better, recall relevant knowledge more easily, and finally reason out the answer. We discover these rich visual clues by mining question-answer pairs in images and sending them into multi-modal large language models as prompts. We call the proposed method Q&A Prompts. Specifically, we first use the image-answer pairs and the corresponding questions in the training set as inputs and outputs to train a visual question generation model. Then, we use an image tagging model to identify various instances and send packaged image-tag pairs into the visual question generation model to generate relevant questions with the extracted image tags as answers. Finally, we encode these generated question-answer pairs as prompts with a visual-aware prompting module and send them into pre-trained multi-modal large language models to reason out the final answers. Experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art methods, our Q&A Prompts achieves substantial improvements on the challenging visual question answering datasets requiring reasoning over diverse world knowledge, such as OK-VQA and A-OKVQA.
Medical image representations can be learned through medical vision-language contrastive learning (mVLCL) where medical imaging reports are used as weak supervision through image-text alignment. These learned image representations can be transferred to and benefit various downstream medical vision tasks such as disease classification and segmentation. Recent mVLCL methods attempt to align image sub-regions and the report keywords as local-matchings. However, these methods aggregate all local-matchings via simple pooling operations while ignoring the inherent relations between them. These methods therefore fail to reason between local-matchings that are semantically related, e.g., local-matchings that correspond to the disease word and the location word (semantic-relations), and also fail to differentiate such clinically important local-matchings from others that correspond to less meaningful words, e.g., conjunction words (importance-relations). Hence, we propose a mVLCL method that models the inter-matching relations between local-matchings via a relation-enhanced contrastive learning framework (RECLF). In RECLF, we introduce a semantic-relation reasoning module (SRM) and an importance-relation reasoning module (IRM) to enable more fine-grained report supervision for image representation learning. We evaluated our method using four public benchmark datasets on four downstream tasks, including segmentation, zero-shot classification, supervised classification, and cross-modal retrieval. Our results demonstrated the superiority of our RECLF over the state-of-the-art mVLCL methods with consistent improvements across single-modal and cross-modal tasks. These results suggest that our RECLF, by modelling the inter-matching relations, can learn improved medical image representations with better generalization capabilities.
Although deep learning are commonly employed for image recognition, usually huge amount of labeled training data is required, which may not always be readily available. This leads to a noticeable performance disparity when compared to state-of-the-art unsupervised face verification techniques. In this work, we propose a method to narrow this gap by leveraging an autoencoder to convert the face image vector into a novel representation. Notably, the autoencoder is trained to reconstruct neighboring face image vectors rather than the original input image vectors. These neighbor face image vectors are chosen through an unsupervised process based on the highest cosine scores with the training face image vectors. The proposed method achieves a relative improvement of 56\% in terms of EER over the baseline system on Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW) dataset. This has successfully narrowed down the performance gap between cosine and PLDA scoring systems.
The image-level label has prevailed in weakly supervised semantic segmentation tasks due to its easy availability. Since image-level labels can only indicate the existence or absence of specific categories of objects, visualization-based techniques have been widely adopted to provide object location clues. Considering class activation maps (CAMs) can only locate the most discriminative part of objects, recent approaches usually adopt an expansion strategy to enlarge the activation area for more integral object localization. However, without proper constraints, the expanded activation will easily intrude into the background region. In this paper, we propose spatial structure constraints (SSC) for weakly supervised semantic segmentation to alleviate the unwanted object over-activation of attention expansion. Specifically, we propose a CAM-driven reconstruction module to directly reconstruct the input image from deep CAM features, which constrains the diffusion of last-layer object attention by preserving the coarse spatial structure of the image content. Moreover, we propose an activation self-modulation module to refine CAMs with finer spatial structure details by enhancing regional consistency. Without external saliency models to provide background clues, our approach achieves 72.7\% and 47.0\% mIoU on the PASCAL VOC 2012 and COCO datasets, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of our proposed approach.
This paper introduces InverseMatrixVT3D, an efficient method for transforming multi-view image features into 3D feature volumes for 3D semantic occupancy prediction. Existing methods for constructing 3D volumes often rely on depth estimation, device-specific operators, or transformer queries, which hinders the widespread adoption of 3D occupancy models. In contrast, our approach leverages two projection matrices to store the static mapping relationships and matrix multiplications to efficiently generate global Bird's Eye View (BEV) features and local 3D feature volumes. Specifically, we achieve this by performing matrix multiplications between multi-view image feature maps and two sparse projection matrices. We introduce a sparse matrix handling technique for the projection matrices to optimise GPU memory usage. Moreover, a global-local attention fusion module is proposed to integrate the global BEV features with the local 3D feature volumes to obtain the final 3D volume. We also employ a multi-scale supervision mechanism to further enhance performance. Comprehensive experiments on the nuScenes dataset demonstrate the simplicity and effectiveness of our method. This paper presents a novel method for reconstructing 3D garment models from a single image of a posed user. Previous studies that have primarily focused on accurately reconstructing garment geometries to match the input garment image may often result in unnatural-looking garments when deformed for new poses. To overcome this limitation, our approach takes a different approach by inferring the fundamental shape of the garment through sewing patterns from a single image, rather than directly reconstructing 3D garments. Our method consists of two stages. Firstly, given a single image of a posed user, it predicts the garment image worn on a T-pose, representing the baseline form of the garment. Then, it estimates the sewing pattern parameters based on the T-pose garment image. By simulating the stitching and draping of the sewing pattern using physics simulation, we can generate 3D garments that can adaptively deform to arbitrary poses. The effectiveness of our method is validated through ablation studies on the major components and a comparison with other approaches.
In smartphones and compact cameras, the Image Signal Processor (ISP) transforms the RAW sensor image into a human-readable sRGB image. Most popular super-resolution methods depart from a sRGB image and upscale it further, improving its quality. However, modeling the degradations in the sRGB domain is complicated because of the non-linear ISP transformations. Despite this known issue, only a few methods work directly with RAW images and tackle real-world sensor degradations. We tackle blind image super-resolution in the RAW domain. We design a realistic degradation pipeline tailored specifically for training models with raw sensor data. Our approach considers sensor noise, defocus, exposure, and other common issues. Our BSRAW models trained with our pipeline can upscale real-scene RAW images and improve their quality. As part of this effort, we also present a new DSLM dataset and benchmark for this task.
Segmenting any object represents a crucial step towards achieving artificial general intelligence, and the "Segment Anything Model" (SAM) has significantly advanced the development of foundational models in computer vision. We have high expectations regarding whether SAM can enhance highly accurate dichotomous image segmentation. In fact, the evidence presented in this article demonstrates that by inputting SAM with simple prompt boxes and utilizing the results output by SAM as input for IS5Net, we can greatly improve the effectiveness of highly accurate dichotomous image segmentation.
Cross-modal retrieval is the task of retrieving samples of a given modality by using queries of a different one. Due to the wide range of practical applications, the problem has been mainly focused on the vision and language case, e.g. text to image retrieval, where models like CLIP have proven effective in solving such tasks. The dominant approach to learning such coordinated representations consists of projecting them onto a common space where matching views stay close and those from non-matching pairs are pushed away from each other. Although this cross-modal coordination has been applied also to other pairwise combinations, extending it to an arbitrary number of diverse modalities is a problem that has not been fully explored in the literature. In this paper, we propose two different approaches to the problem. The first is based on an extension of the CLIP contrastive objective to an arbitrary number of input modalities, while the second departs from the contrastive formulation and tackles the coordination problem by regressing the cross-modal similarities towards a target that reflects two simple and intuitive constraints of the cross-modal retrieval task. We run experiments on two different datasets, over different combinations of input modalities and show that the approach is not only simple and effective but also allows for tackling the retrieval problem in novel ways. Besides capturing a more diverse set of pair-wise interactions, we show that we can use the learned representations to improve retrieval performance by combining the embeddings from two or more such modalities.
