Simultaneously Transmitting And Reflecting (STAR) RIS for 6G: Fundamentals, Recent Advances, and Future Directions

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) have been attracting significant attention in both academia and industry for their advantages of achieving 360{\deg} coverage and enhanced degrees of freedom. This article first identifies the fundamentals of STAR-RIS, by discussing the hardware models, channel models, and signal models. Then, three representative categorizing approaches for STAR-RIS are introduced from phase-shift, directional, and energy consumption perspectives. Furthermore, the beamforming design of STAR-RIS is investigated for both independent and coupled phase-shift cases. A general optimization framework is proposed as the recent advances, which has high compatibility and provable optimality regardless of the application scenarios. As a further advance, several promising applications are discussed to demonstrate the potential benefits of applying STAR-RIS in the sixth-generation wireless network. Lastly, a few future directions and research opportunities are highlighted for motivating future work.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access For Near-Field Communications

The novel concept of near-field non-orthogonal multiple access (NF-NOMA) communications is proposed. The near-filed beamfocusing enables NOMA to be carried out in both angular and distance domains. Two novel frameworks are proposed, namely, single-location-beamfocusing NF-NOMA (SLB-NF-NOMA) and multiple-location-beamfocusing NF-NOMA (MLB-NF-NOMA). 1) For SLB-NF-NOMA, two NOMA users in the same angular direction with distinct quality of service (QoS) requirements can be grouped into one cluster. The hybrid beamformer design and power allocation problem is formulated to maximize the sum rate of the users with higher QoS (H-QoS) requirements. To solve this problem, the analog beamformer is first designed to focus the energy on the H-QoS users and the zero-forcing (ZF) digital beamformer is employed. Then, the optimal power allocation is obtained. 2) For MLB-NF-NOMA, the two NOMA users in the same cluster can have different angular directions. The analog beamformer is first designed to focus the energy on both two NOMA users. Then, a singular value decomposition (SVD) based ZF (SVD-ZF) digital beamformer is designed. Furthermore, a novel antenna allocation algorithm is proposed. Finally, a suboptimal power allocation algorithm is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the NF-NOMA can achieve a higher spectral efficiency and provide a higher flexibility than conventional far-field NOMA.

Performance Analysis for Near-Field MIMO: Discrete and Continuous Aperture Antennas

Performance analysis is carried out in a near-field multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for both discrete and continuous aperture antennas. The effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) is first derived. It is shown that near-field MIMO systems have a higher EDoF than free-space far-field ones. Additionally, the near-field EDoF further depends on the communication distance. Based on the derived EDoF, closed-form expressions of channel capacity with a fixed distance are obtained. As a further advance, with randomly deployed receivers, ergodic capacity is derived. Simulation results reveal that near-field MIMO has an enhanced multiplexing gain even under line-of-sight transmissions. In addition, the performance of discrete MIMO converges to that of continuous-aperture MIMO.

A Survey on Model-based, Heuristic, and Machine Learning Optimization Approaches in RIS-aided Wireless Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have received considerable attention as a key enabler for envisioned 6G networks, for the purpose of improving the network capacity, coverage, efficiency, and security with low energy consumption and low hardware cost. However, integrating RISs into the existing infrastructure greatly increases the network management complexity, especially for controlling a significant number of RIS elements. To unleash the full potential of RISs, efficient optimization approaches are of great importance. This work provides a comprehensive survey on optimization techniques for RIS-aided wireless communications, including model-based, heuristic, and machine learning (ML) algorithms. In particular, we first summarize the problem formulations in the literature with diverse objectives and constraints, e.g., sum-rate maximization, power minimization, and imperfect channel state information constraints. Then, we introduce model-based algorithms that have been used in the literature, such as alternating optimization, the majorization-minimization method, and successive convex approximation. Next, heuristic optimization is discussed, which applies heuristic rules for obtaining low-complexity solutions. Moreover, we present state-of-the-art ML algorithms and applications towards RISs, i.e., supervised and unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, federated learning, graph learning, transfer learning, and hierarchical learning-based approaches. Model-based, heuristic, and ML approaches are compared in terms of stability, robustness, optimality and so on, providing a systematic understanding of these techniques. Finally, we highlight RIS-aided applications towards 6G networks and identify future challenges.

Near-Field Communications: What Will Be Different?

The design dilemma of "What will be different between near-field communications (NFC) and far-field communications (FFC)?" is addressed from four perspectives. 1) From the channel modelling perspective, the differences between near-field and far-field channel models are discussed. A novel Green's function-based channel model is proposed for continuous-aperture antennas, which is contrasted to conventional channel models tailored for spatially-discrete antennas. 2) From the performance analysis perspective, analytical results for characterizing the degrees of freedom and the power scaling laws in the near-field region are provided for both spatially-discrete and continuous-aperture antennas. 3) From the beamforming perspective, far-field beamforming is analogous to a "flashlight" that enables beamsteering, while near-field beamforming can be likened to a "spotlight" that facilitates beamfocusing. As a further advance, a couple of new beamforming structures are proposed for exploiting the new characteristics of NFC. 4) From the application perspective, new designs are discussed in the context of promising next-generation technologies in NFC, where our preliminary numerical results demonstrate that distance-aware target sensing and enhanced physical layer security can be realized in NFC. Finally, several future research directions of NFC are discussed.

Two-Stage Hierarchical Beam Training for Near-Field Communications

Extremely large-scale array (XL-array) has emerged as a promising technology to improve the spectrum efficiency and spatial resolution of future wireless systems. However, the huge number of antennas renders the users more likely to locate in the near-field (instead of the far-field) region of the XL-array with spherical wavefront propagation. This inevitably incurs prohibitively high beam training overhead since it requires a two-dimensional (2D) beam search over both the angular and distance domains. To address this issue, we propose in this paper an efficient two-stage hierarchical beam training method for near-field communications. Specifically, in the first stage, we employ the central sub-array of the XL-array to search for a coarse user direction in the angular domain with conventional far-field hierarchical codebook. Then, in the second stage, given the coarse user direction, we progressively search for the fine-grained user direction-and-distance in the polar domain with a dedicatedly designed codebook. Numerical results show that our proposed two-stage hierarchical beam training method can achieve over 99% training overhead reduction as compared to the 2D exhaustive search, yet achieving comparable rate performance.

Physical Layer Security in Near-Field Communications: What Will Be Changed?

A near-field secure transmission framework is proposed. Employing the hybrid beamforming architecture, a base station (BS) transmits the confidential information to a legitimate user (U) against an eavesdropper (E) in the near field. A two-stage algorithm is proposed to maximize the near-field secrecy capacity. Based on the fully-digital beamformers obtained in the first stage, the optimal analog beamformers and baseband digital beamformers can be alternatingly derived in the closed-form expressions in the second stage. Numerical results demonstrate that in contrast to the far-field secure communication relying on the angular disparity, the near-filed secure communication mainly relies on the distance disparity between U and E.

Active Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting (STAR)-RISs: Modelling and Analysis

A hardware model for active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) is proposed consisting of reflection-type amplifiers. The amplitude gains of the STAR element are derived for both coupled and independent phase-shift scenarios. Based on the proposed hardware model, an active STAR-RIS-aided two-user downlink communication system is investigated. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the outage probabilities of both the coupled and independent phase-shift scenarios. To obtain further insights, scaling laws and diversity orders are derived for both users. Analytical results confirm that active STAR-RIS achieves the same diversity orders as passive ones while their scaling laws are different. It is proved that average received SNRs scale with M and M^2 for active and passive STAR-RISs, respectively. Numerical results show that active STAR-RISs outperform passive STAR-RISs in terms of outage probability especially when the number of elements is small.

Revealing the Impact of SIC in NOMA-ISAC

The impact of successive interference cancellation (SIC) in non-orthogonal multiple access integrated sensing and communications (NOMA-ISAC) is analyzed. A two-stage SIC-based framework is proposed to deal with the inter-communication user and inter-functionality interferences. The performance of sensing and communications (S\&C) is analyzed for two SIC orders, i.e., the communications-centric SIC and the sensing-centric SIC. For each design, diversity orders, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slopes, and high-SNR power offsets of the sensing rate (SR) and communication rate (CR) are derived as insights. Analytical results indicate that i) the main influence of SIC order on the SR and CR lies in the high-SNR power offsets; ii) ISAC provides more degrees of freedom than frequency-division S\&C (FDSAC). Numerical results show that the SR-CR region of ISAC entirely covers that of FDSAC.
