Generative AI has significantly reduced the entry barrier to the domain of AI owing to the ease of use and core capabilities of automation, translation, and intelligent actions in our day to day lives. Currently, Large language models (LLMs) that power such chatbots are being utilized primarily for their automation capabilities for software monitoring, report generation etc. and for specific personalized question answering capabilities, on a limited scope and scale. One major limitation of the currently evolving family of LLMs is 'hallucinations', wherein inaccurate responses are reported as factual. Hallucinations are primarily caused by biased training data, ambiguous prompts and inaccurate LLM parameters, and they majorly occur while combining mathematical facts with language-based context. Thus, monitoring and controlling for hallucinations becomes necessary when designing solutions that are meant for decision makers. In this work we present the three major stages in the journey of designing hallucination-minimized LLM-based solutions that are specialized for the decision makers of the financial domain, namely: prototyping, scaling and LLM evolution using human feedback. These three stages and the novel data to answer generation modules presented in this work are necessary to ensure that the Generative AI chatbots, autonomous reports and alerts are reliable and high-quality to aid key decision-making processes.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown impressive abilities in natural language understanding and generation, leading to their use in applications such as chatbots and virtual assistants. However, existing LLM frameworks face limitations in handling domain-specific data analytics tasks with rich data structures. Moreover, they struggle with flexibility to meet diverse user requirements. To address these issues, TaskWeaver is proposed as a code-first framework for building LLM-powered autonomous agents. It converts user requests into executable code and treats user-defined plugins as callable functions. TaskWeaver provides support for rich data structures, flexible plugin usage, and dynamic plugin selection, and leverages LLM coding capabilities for complex logic. It also incorporates domain-specific knowledge through examples and ensures the secure execution of generated code. TaskWeaver offers a powerful and flexible framework for creating intelligent conversational agents that can handle complex tasks and adapt to domain-specific scenarios. Emotion Recognition in Conversations (ERC) is a critical aspect of affective computing, and it has many practical applications in healthcare, education, chatbots, and social media platforms. Earlier approaches for ERC analysis involved modeling both speaker and long-term contextual information using graph neural network architectures. However, it is ideal to deploy speaker-independent models for real-world applications. Additionally, long context windows can potentially create confusion in recognizing the emotion of an utterance in a conversation. To overcome these limitations, we propose novel line conversation graph convolutional network (LineConGCN) and graph attention (LineConGAT) models for ERC analysis. These models are speaker-independent and built using a graph construction strategy for conversations -- line conversation graphs (LineConGraphs). The conversational context in LineConGraphs is short-term -- limited to one previous and future utterance, and speaker information is not part of the graph. We evaluate the performance of our proposed models on two benchmark datasets, IEMOCAP and MELD, and show that our LineConGAT model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with an F1-score of 64.58% and 76.50%. Moreover, we demonstrate that embedding sentiment shift information into line conversation graphs further enhances the ERC performance in the case of GCN models.
The gigapixel scale of whole slide images (WSIs) poses a challenge for histopathology multi-modal chatbots, requiring a global WSI analysis for diagnosis, compounding evidence from different WSI patches. Current visual instruction datasets, generated through large language models, focus on creating question/answer pairs for individual image patches, which may lack diagnostic capacity on their own in histopathology, further complicated by the absence of spatial grounding in histopathology image captions. To bridge this gap, we introduce Quilt-Instruct, a large-scale dataset of 107,131 histopathology-specific instruction question/answer pairs, that is collected by leveraging educational histopathology videos from YouTube, which provides spatial localization of captions by automatically extracting narrators' cursor movements. In addition, we provide contextual reasoning by extracting diagnosis and supporting facts from the entire video content to guide the extrapolative reasoning of GPT-4. Using Quilt-Instruct, we train Quilt-LLaVA, which can reason beyond the given single image patch, enabling diagnostic reasoning and the capability of spatial awareness. To evaluate Quilt-LLaVA, we propose a comprehensive evaluation dataset created from 985 images and 1283 human-generated question-answers. We also thoroughly evaluate Quilt-LLaVA using public histopathology datasets, where Quilt-LLaVA significantly outperforms SOTA by over 10% on relative GPT-4 score and 4% and 9% on open and closed set VQA. Using natural language processing (NLP) technologies to develop medical chatbots makes the diagnosis of the patient more convenient and efficient, which is a typical application in healthcare AI. Because of its importance, lots of research have been come out. Recently, the neural generative models have shown their impressive ability as the core of chatbot, while it cannot scale well when directly applied to medical conversation due to the lack of medical-specific knowledge. To address the limitation, a scalable Medical Knowledge Assisted mechanism, MKA, is proposed in this paper. The mechanism aims to assist general neural generative models to achieve better performance on the medical conversation task. The medical-specific knowledge graph is designed within the mechanism, which contains 6 types of medical-related information, including department, drug, check, symptom, disease, food. Besides, the specific token concatenation policy is defined to effectively inject medical information into the input data. Evaluation of our method is carried out on two typical medical datasets, MedDG and MedDialog-CN. The evaluation results demonstrate that models combined with our mechanism outperform original methods in multiple automatic evaluation metrics. Generative Large Language Models (LLMs) show potential in data analysis, yet their full capabilities remain uncharted. Our work explores the capabilities of LLMs for creating and refining visualizations via conversational interfaces. We used an LLM to conduct a re-analysis of a prior Wizard-of-Oz study examining the use of chatbots for conducting visual analysis. We surfaced the strengths and weaknesses of LLM-driven analytic chatbots, finding that they fell short in supporting progressive visualization refinements. From these findings, we developed AI Threads, a multi-threaded analytic chatbot that enables analysts to proactively manage conversational context and improve the efficacy of its outputs. We evaluate its usability through a crowdsourced study (n=40) and in-depth interviews with expert analysts (n=10). We further demonstrate the capabilities of AI Threads on a dataset outside the LLM's training corpus. Our findings show the potential of LLMs while also surfacing challenges and fruitful avenues for future research.
Recent research highlights the significant potential of ChatGPT for text annotation in social science research. However, ChatGPT is a closed-source product which has major drawbacks with regards to transparency, reproducibility, cost, and data protection. Recent advances in open-source (OS) large language models (LLMs) offer alternatives which remedy these challenges. This means that it is important to evaluate the performance of OS LLMs relative to ChatGPT and standard approaches to supervised machine learning classification. We conduct a systematic comparative evaluation of the performance of a range of OS LLM models alongside ChatGPT, using both zero- and few-shot learning as well as generic and custom prompts, with results compared to more traditional supervised classification models. Using a new dataset of Tweets from US news media, and focusing on simple binary text annotation tasks for standard social science concepts, we find significant variation in the performance of ChatGPT and OS models across the tasks, and that supervised classifiers consistently outperform both. Given the unreliable performance of ChatGPT and the significant challenges it poses to Open Science we advise against using ChatGPT for substantive text annotation tasks in social science research.
Automated coaching messages for weight control can save time and costs, but their repetitive, generic nature may limit their effectiveness compared to human coaching. Large language model (LLM) based artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, like ChatGPT, could offer more personalized and novel messages to address repetition with their data-processing abilities. While LLM AI demonstrates promise to encourage healthier lifestyles, studies have yet to examine the feasibility and acceptability of LLM-based BWL coaching. 87 adults in a weight-loss trial rated ten coaching messages' helpfulness (five human-written, five ChatGPT-generated) using a 5-point Likert scale, providing additional open-ended feedback to justify their ratings. Participants also identified which messages they believed were AI-generated. The evaluation occurred in two phases: messages in Phase 1 were perceived as impersonal and negative, prompting revisions for Phase 2 messages. In Phase 1, AI-generated messages were rated less helpful than human-written ones, with 66 percent receiving a helpfulness rating of 3 or higher. However, in Phase 2, the AI messages matched the human-written ones regarding helpfulness, with 82% scoring three or above. Additionally, 50% were misidentified as human-written, suggesting AI's sophistication in mimicking human-generated content. A thematic analysis of open-ended feedback revealed that participants appreciated AI's empathy and personalized suggestions but found them more formulaic, less authentic, and too data-focused. This study reveals the preliminary feasibility and acceptability of LLM AIs, like ChatGPT, in crafting potentially effective weight control coaching messages. Our findings also underscore areas for future enhancement.
As the capabilities of Large-Language Models (LLMs) become widely recognized, there is an increasing demand for human-machine chat applications. Human interaction with text often inherently invokes mental imagery, an aspect that existing LLM-based chatbots like GPT-4 do not currently emulate, as they are confined to generating text-only content. To bridge this gap, we introduce ChatIllusion, an advanced Generative multimodal large language model (MLLM) that combines the capabilities of LLM with not only visual comprehension but also creativity. Specifically, ChatIllusion integrates Stable Diffusion XL and Llama, which have been fine-tuned on modest image-caption data, to facilitate multiple rounds of illustrated chats. The central component of ChatIllusion is the "GenAdapter," an efficient approach that equips the multimodal language model with capabilities for visual representation, without necessitating modifications to the foundational model. Extensive experiments validate the efficacy of our approach, showcasing its ability to produce diverse and superior-quality image outputs Simultaneously, it preserves semantic consistency and control over the dialogue, significantly enhancing the overall user's quality of experience (QoE).
