In this letter, we propose the use of a meta-learning based precoder optimization framework to directly optimize the Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) precoders with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). By exploiting the overfitting of the compact neural network to maximize the explicit Average Sum-Rate (ASR) expression, we effectively bypass the need for any other training data while minimizing the total running time. Numerical results reveal that the meta-learning based solution achieves similar ASR performance to conventional precoder optimization in medium-scale scenarios, and significantly outperforms sub-optimal low complexity precoder algorithms in the large-scale regime.
Fault diagnosis is a crucial area of research in the industry due to diverse operating conditions that exhibit non-Gaussian, multi-mode, and center-drift characteristics. Currently, data-driven approaches are the main focus in the field, but they pose challenges for continuous fault classification and parameter updates of fault classifiers, particularly in multiple operating modes and real-time settings. Therefore, a pressing issue is to achieve real-time multi-mode fault diagnosis for industrial systems. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach that utilizes an evidence reasoning (ER) algorithm to fuse information and merge outputs from different base classifiers. These base classifiers are developed using a broad learning system (BLS) to improve good fault diagnosis performance. Moreover, in this approach, the pseudo-label learning method is employed to update model parameters in real-time. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we perform experiments using the multi-mode Tennessee Eastman process dataset.
Approaches based on Binary decision diagrams (BDDs) have recently achieved state-of-the-art results for multiobjective integer programming problems. The variable ordering used in constructing BDDs can have a significant impact on their size and on the quality of bounds derived from relaxed or restricted BDDs for single-objective optimization problems. We first showcase a similar impact of variable ordering on the Pareto frontier (PF) enumeration time for the multiobjective knapsack problem, suggesting the need for deriving variable ordering methods that improve the scalability of the multiobjective BDD approach. To that end, we derive a novel parameter configuration space based on variable scoring functions which are linear in a small set of interpretable and easy-to-compute variable features. We show how the configuration space can be efficiently explored using black-box optimization, circumventing the curse of dimensionality (in the number of variables and objectives), and finding good orderings that reduce the PF enumeration time. However, black-box optimization approaches incur a computational overhead that outweighs the reduction in time due to good variable ordering. To alleviate this issue, we propose LEO, a supervised learning approach for finding efficient variable orderings that reduce the enumeration time. Experiments on benchmark sets from the knapsack problem with 3-7 objectives and up to 80 variables show that LEO is ~30-300% and ~10-200% faster at PF enumeration than common ordering strategies and algorithm configuration. Meetings play a critical infrastructural role in the coordination of work. In recent years, due to shift to hybrid and remote work, more meetings are moving to online Computer Mediated Spaces. This has led to new problems (e.g. more time spent in less engaging meetings) and new opportunities (e.g. automated transcription/captioning and recap support). Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) for dialog summarization have the potential to improve the experience of meetings by reducing individuals' meeting load and increasing the clarity and alignment of meeting outputs. Despite this potential, they face technological limitation due to long transcripts and inability to capture diverse recap needs based on user's context. To address these gaps, we design, implement and evaluate in-context a meeting recap system. We first conceptualize two salient recap representations -- important highlights, and a structured, hierarchical minutes view. We develop a system to operationalize the representations with dialogue summarization as its building blocks. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the system with seven users in the context of their work meetings. Our findings show promise in using LLM-based dialogue summarization for meeting recap and the need for both representations in different contexts. However, we find that LLM-based recap still lacks an understanding of whats personally relevant to participants, can miss important details, and mis-attributions can be detrimental to group dynamics. We identify collaboration opportunities such as a shared recap document that a high quality recap enables. We report on implications for designing AI systems to partner with users to learn and improve from natural interactions to overcome the limitations related to personal relevance and summarization quality.
$\Delta_T$ noise generated due to temperature gradient in the absence of charge current has recently attracted a lot of interest. In this paper, for the first time, we derive spin-polarized charge $\Delta_T$ noise and spin $\Delta_T$ noise along with its shot noise-like and thermal noise-like contributions. Introducing a spin flipper at the interface of a bilayer metal junction with a temperature gradient, we examine the impact of spin-flip scattering. We do a detailed analysis of charge and spin $\Delta_T$ noise in four distinct setups for two distinct temperature regimes: the first case of one hot \& the other cold reservoir and the second case of reservoirs with comparable temperatures, and also two distinct bias voltage regimes: the first case of zero bias voltage and second case of finite bias voltage. In all these regimes, we ensure that the net charge current transported is zero always. We find negative charge $\Delta_T$ noise for reservoirs at comparable temperatures while for the one hot \& another cold reservoir case, charge $\Delta_T$ noise is positive. We also see that spin $\Delta_T$ noise and spin $\Delta_T$ thermal noise-like contributions are negative for one hot and the other cold reservoir case. Recent work on the general bound for spin $\Delta_T$ shot noise with a spin-dependent bias suggests it is always positive. In this paper, we see spin $\Delta_T$ shot noise-like contribution to be negative in contrast to positive charge $\Delta_T$ shot noise contribution, although in the absence of any spin-dependent bias. Spin-flip scattering exhibits the intriguing effect of a change in sign in both charge and spin $\Delta_T$ noise, which can help probe spin-polarized transport.
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most destructive weather systems. Realistically and efficiently detecting and tracking TCs are critical for assessing their impacts and risks. Recently, a multilevel robustness framework has been introduced to study the critical points of time-varying vector fields. The framework quantifies the robustness of critical points across varying neighborhoods. By relating the multilevel robustness with critical point tracking, the framework has demonstrated its potential in cyclone tracking. An advantage is that it identifies cyclonic features using only 2D wind vector fields, which is encouraging as most tracking algorithms require multiple dynamic and thermodynamic variables at different altitudes. A disadvantage is that the framework does not scale well computationally for datasets containing a large number of cyclones. This paper introduces a topologically robust physics-informed tracking framework (TROPHY) for TC tracking. The main idea is to integrate physical knowledge of TC to drastically improve the computational efficiency of multilevel robustness framework for large-scale climate datasets. First, during preprocessing, we propose a physics-informed feature selection strategy to filter 90% of critical points that are short-lived and have low stability, thus preserving good candidates for TC tracking. Second, during in-processing, we impose constraints during the multilevel robustness computation to focus only on physics-informed neighborhoods of TCs. We apply TROPHY to 30 years of 2D wind fields from reanalysis data in ERA5 and generate a number of TC tracks. In comparison with the observed tracks, we demonstrate that TROPHY can capture TC characteristics that are comparable to and sometimes even better than a well-validated TC tracking algorithm that requires multiple dynamic and thermodynamic scalar fields.
For the 6G mobile networks, in-situ model downloading has emerged as an important use case to enable real-time adaptive artificial intelligence on edge devices. However, the simultaneous downloading of diverse and high-dimensional models to multiple devices over wireless links presents a significant communication bottleneck. To overcome the bottleneck, we propose the framework of model broadcasting and assembling (MBA), which represents the first attempt on leveraging reusable knowledge, referring to shared parameters among tasks, to enable parameter broadcasting to reduce communication overhead. The MBA framework comprises two key components. The first, the MBA protocol, defines the system operations including parameter selection from a model library, power control for broadcasting, and model assembling at devices. The second component is the joint design of parameter-selection-and-power-control (PS-PC), which provides guarantees on devices' model performance and minimizes the downloading latency. The corresponding optimization problem is simplified by decomposition into the sequential PS and PC sub-problems without compromising its optimality. The PS sub-problem is solved efficiently by designing two efficient algorithms. On one hand, the low-complexity algorithm of greedy parameter selection features the construction of candidate model sets and a selection metric, both of which are designed under the criterion of maximum reusable knowledge among tasks. On the other hand, the optimal tree-search algorithm gains its efficiency via the proposed construction of a compact binary tree pruned using model architecture constraints and an intelligent branch-and-bound search. Given optimal PS, the optimal PC policy is derived in closed form. Extensive experiments demonstrate the substantial reduction in downloading latency achieved by the proposed MBA compared to traditional model downloading.
Recent works have explored the fundamental role of depth estimation in multi-view stereo (MVS) and semantic scene completion (SSC). They generally construct 3D cost volumes to explore geometric correspondence in depth, and estimate such volumes in a single step relying directly on the ground truth approximation. However, such problem cannot be thoroughly handled in one step due to complex empirical distributions, especially in challenging regions like occlusions, reflections, etc. In this paper, we formulate the depth estimation task as a multi-step distribution approximation process, and introduce a new paradigm of modeling the Volumetric Probability Distribution progressively (step-by-step) following a Markov chain with Diffusion models (VPDD). Specifically, to constrain the multi-step generation of volume in VPDD, we construct a meta volume guidance and a confidence-aware contextual guidance as conditional geometry priors to facilitate the distribution approximation. For the sampling process, we further investigate an online filtering strategy to maintain consistency in volume representations for stable training. Experiments demonstrate that our plug-and-play VPDD outperforms the state-of-the-arts for tasks of MVS and SSC, and can also be easily extended to different baselines to get improvement. It is worth mentioning that we are the first camera-based work that surpasses LiDAR-based methods on the SemanticKITTI dataset.
An open-ended time series refers to a series of data points indexed in time order without an end. Such a time series can be found everywhere due to the prevalence of Internet of Things. Providing lightweight and real-time anomaly detection for open-ended time series is highly desirable to industry and organizations since it allows immediate response and avoids potential financial loss. In the last few years, several real-time time series anomaly detection approaches have been introduced. However, they might exhaust system resources when they are applied to open-ended time series for a long time. To address this issue, in this paper we propose RePAD2, a lightweight real-time anomaly detection approach for open-ended time series by improving its predecessor RePAD, which is one of the state-of-the-art anomaly detection approaches. We conducted a series of experiments to compare RePAD2 with RePAD and another similar detection approach based on real-world time series datasets, and demonstrated that RePAD2 can address the mentioned resource exhaustion issue while offering comparable detection accuracy and slightly less time consumption.
Understanding the state of changed areas requires that precise information be given about the changes. Thus, detecting different kinds of changes is important for land surface monitoring. SAR sensors are ideal to fulfil this task, because of their all-time and all-weather capabilities, with good accuracy of the acquisition geometry and without effects of atmospheric constituents for amplitude data. In this study, we propose a simplified generalized likelihood ratio ($S_{GLR}$) method assuming that corresponding temporal pixels have the same equivalent number of looks (ENL). Thanks to the denoised data provided by a ratio-based multitemporal SAR image denoising method (RABASAR), we successfully applied this similarity test approach to compute the change areas. A new change magnitude index method and an improved spectral clustering-based change classification method are also developed. In addition, we apply the simplified generalized likelihood ratio to detect the maximum change magnitude time, and the change starting and ending times. Then, we propose to use an adaptation of the REACTIV method to visualize the detection results vividly. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated through the processing of simulated and SAR images, and the comparison with classical techniques. In particular, numerical experiments proved that the developed method has good performances in detecting farmland area changes, building area changes, harbour area changes and flooding area changes.
