In recent years, robotic exploration has become increasingly important in planetary exploration. One area of particular interest for exploration is Martian lava tubes, which have several distinct features of interest. First, it is theorized that they contain more easily accessible resources such as water ice, needed for in-situ utilization on Mars. Second, lava tubes of significant size can provide radiation and impact shelter for possible future human missions to Mars. Third, lava tubes may offer a protected and preserved view into Mars' geological and possible biological past. However, exploration of these lava tubes poses significant challenges due to their sheer size, geometric complexity, uneven terrain, steep slopes, collapsed sections, significant obstacles, and unstable surfaces. Such challenges may hinder traditional wheeled rover exploration. To overcome these challenges, legged robots and particularly jumping systems have been proposed as potential solutions. Jumping legged robots utilize legs to both walk and jump. This allows them to traverse uneven terrain and steep slopes more easily compared to wheeled or tracked systems. In the context of Martian lava tube exploration, jumping legged robots would be particularly useful due to their ability to jump over big boulders, gaps, and obstacles, as well as to descend and climb steep slopes. This would allow them to explore and map such caves, and possibly collect samples from areas that may otherwise be inaccessible. This paper presents the specifications, design, capabilities, and possible mission profiles for state-of-the-art legged robots tailored to space exploration. Additionally, it presents the design, capabilities, and possible mission profiles of a new jumping legged robot for Martian lava tube exploration that is being developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
This paper contributes a novel learning-based method for aggressive task-driven compression of depth images and their encoding as images tailored to collision prediction for robotic systems. A novel 3D image processing methodology is proposed that accounts for the robot's size in order to appropriately "inflate" the obstacles represented in the depth image and thus obtain the distance that can be traversed by the robot in a collision-free manner along any given ray within the camera frustum. Such depth-and-collision image pairs are used to train a neural network that follows the architecture of Variational Autoencoders to compress-and-transform the information in the original depth image to derive a latent representation that encodes the collision information for the given depth image. We compare our proposed task-driven encoding method with classical task-agnostic methods and demonstrate superior performance for the task of collision image prediction from extremely low-dimensional latent spaces. A set of comparative studies show that the proposed approach is capable of encoding depth image-and-collision image tuples from complex scenes with thin obstacles at long distances better than the classical methods at compression ratios as high as 4050:1.
This paper contributes a novel and modularized learning-based method for aerial robots navigating cluttered environments containing hard-to-perceive thin obstacles without assuming access to a map or the full pose estimation of the robot. The proposed solution builds upon a semantically-enhanced Variational Autoencoder that is trained with both real-world and simulated depth images to compress the input data, while preserving semantically-labeled thin obstacles and handling invalid pixels in the depth sensor's output. This compressed representation, in addition to the robot's partial state involving its linear/angular velocities and its attitude are then utilized to train an uncertainty-aware 3D Collision Prediction Network in simulation to predict collision scores for candidate action sequences in a predefined motion primitives library. A set of simulation and experimental studies in cluttered environments with various sizes and types of obstacles, including multiple hard-to-perceive thin objects, were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compare against an end-to-end trained baseline. The results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed semantically-enhanced deep collision prediction for learning-based autonomous navigation.
Developing learning-based methods for navigation of aerial robots is an intensive data-driven process that requires highly parallelized simulation. The full utilization of such simulators is hindered by the lack of parallelized high-level control methods that imitate the real-world robot interface. Responding to this need, we develop the Aerial Gym simulator that can simulate millions of multirotor vehicles parallelly with nonlinear geometric controllers for the Special Euclidean Group SE(3) for attitude, velocity and position tracking. We also develop functionalities for managing a large number of obstacles in the environment, enabling rapid randomization for learning of navigation tasks. In addition, we also provide sample environments having robots with simulated cameras capable of capturing RGB, depth, segmentation and optical flow data in obstacle-rich environments. This simulator is a step towards developing a - currently missing - highly parallelized aerial robot simulation with geometric controllers at a large scale, while also providing a customizable obstacle randomization functionality for navigation tasks. We provide training scripts with compatible reinforcement learning frameworks to navigate the robot to a goal setpoint based on attitude and velocity command interfaces. Finally, we open source the simulator and aim to develop it further to speed up rendering using alternate kernel-based frameworks in order to parallelize ray-casting for depth images thus supporting a larger number of robots.
This paper contributes a novel strategy for semantics-aware autonomous exploration and inspection path planning. Attuned to the fact that environments that need to be explored often involve a sparse set of semantic entities of particular interest, the proposed method offers volumetric exploration combined with two new planning behaviors that together ensure that a complete mesh model is reconstructed for each semantic, while its surfaces are observed at appropriate resolution and through suitable viewing angles. Evaluated in extensive simulation studies and experimental results using a flying robot, the planner delivers efficient combined exploration and high-fidelity inspection planning that is focused on the semantics of interest. Comparisons against relevant methods of the state-of-the-art are further presented.
As aerial robots are tasked to navigate environments of increased complexity, embedding collision tolerance in their design becomes important. In this survey we review the current state-of-the-art within the niche field of collision-tolerant micro aerial vehicles and present different design approaches identified in the literature, as well as methods that have focused on autonomy functionalities that exploit collision resilience. Subsequently, we discuss the relevance to biological systems and provide our view on key directions of future fruitful research.
This paper reports on the state of the art in underground SLAM by discussing different SLAM strategies and results across six teams that participated in the three-year-long SubT competition. In particular, the paper has four main goals. First, we review the algorithms, architectures, and systems adopted by the teams; particular emphasis is put on lidar-centric SLAM solutions (the go-to approach for virtually all teams in the competition), heterogeneous multi-robot operation (including both aerial and ground robots), and real-world underground operation (from the presence of obscurants to the need to handle tight computational constraints). We do not shy away from discussing the dirty details behind the different SubT SLAM systems, which are often omitted from technical papers. Second, we discuss the maturity of the field by highlighting what is possible with the current SLAM systems and what we believe is within reach with some good systems engineering. Third, we outline what we believe are fundamental open problems, that are likely to require further research to break through. Finally, we provide a list of open-source SLAM implementations and datasets that have been produced during the SubT challenge and related efforts, and constitute a useful resource for researchers and practitioners.
This article presents the CERBERUS robotic system-of-systems, which won the DARPA Subterranean Challenge Final Event in 2021. The Subterranean Challenge was organized by DARPA with the vision to facilitate the novel technologies necessary to reliably explore diverse underground environments despite the grueling challenges they present for robotic autonomy. Due to their geometric complexity, degraded perceptual conditions combined with lack of GPS support, austere navigation conditions, and denied communications, subterranean settings render autonomous operations particularly demanding. In response to this challenge, we developed the CERBERUS system which exploits the synergy of legged and flying robots, coupled with robust control especially for overcoming perilous terrain, multi-modal and multi-robot perception for localization and mapping in conditions of sensor degradation, and resilient autonomy through unified exploration path planning and local motion planning that reflects robot-specific limitations. Based on its ability to explore diverse underground environments and its high-level command and control by a single human supervisor, CERBERUS demonstrated efficient exploration, reliable detection of objects of interest, and accurate mapping. In this article, we report results from both the preliminary runs and the final Prize Round of the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, and discuss highlights and challenges faced, alongside lessons learned for the benefit of the community.
This work contributes a marsupial robotic system-of-systems involving a legged and an aerial robot capable of collaborative mapping and exploration path planning that exploits the heterogeneous properties of the two systems and the ability to selectively deploy the aerial system from the ground robot. Exploiting the dexterous locomotion capabilities and long endurance of quadruped robots, the marsupial combination can explore within large-scale and confined environments involving rough terrain. However, as certain types of terrain or vertical geometries can render any ground system unable to continue its exploration, the marsupial system can - when needed - deploy the flying robot which, by exploiting its 3D navigation capabilities, can undertake a focused exploration task within its endurance limitations. Focusing on autonomy, the two systems can co-localize and map together by sharing LiDAR-based maps and plan exploration paths individually, while a tailored graph search onboard the legged robot allows it to identify where and when the ferried aerial platform should be deployed. The system is verified within multiple experimental studies demonstrating the expanded exploration capabilities of the marsupial system-of-systems and facilitating the exploration of otherwise individually unreachable areas.
This work presents the design, hardware realization, autonomous exploration and object detection capabilities of RMF-Owl, a new collision-tolerant aerial robot tailored for resilient autonomous subterranean exploration. The system is custom built for underground exploration with focus on collision tolerance, resilient autonomy with robust localization and mapping, alongside high-performance exploration path planning in confined, obstacle-filled and topologically complex underground environments. Moreover, RMF-Owl offers the ability to search, detect and locate objects of interest which can be particularly useful in search and rescue missions. A series of results from field experiments are presented in order to demonstrate the system's ability to autonomously explore challenging unknown underground environments.
