The advancement of generative AI has given rise to pressing copyright challenges, particularly in music industry. This paper focuses on the economic aspects of these challenges, emphasizing that the economic impact constitutes a central issue in the copyright arena. The complexity of the black-box generative AI technologies not only suggests but necessitates algorithmic solutions. However, such solutions have been largely missing, leading to regulatory challenges in this landscape. We aim to bridge the gap in current approaches by proposing potential royalty models for revenue sharing on AI music generation platforms. Our methodology involves a detailed analysis of existing royalty models in platforms like Spotify and YouTube, and adapting these to the unique context of AI-generated music. A significant challenge we address is the attribution of AI-generated music to influential copyrighted content in the training data. To this end, we present algorithmic solutions employing data attribution techniques. Our experimental results verify the effectiveness of these solutions. This research represents a pioneering effort in integrating technical advancements with economic and legal considerations in the field of generative AI, offering a computational copyright solution for the challenges posed by the opaque nature of AI technologies.
Dance generation, as a branch of human motion generation, has attracted increasing attention. Recently, a few works attempt to enhance dance expressiveness, which includes genre matching, beat alignment, and dance dynamics, from certain aspects. However, the enhancement is quite limited as they lack comprehensive consideration of the aforementioned three factors. In this paper, we propose ExpressiveBailando, a novel dance generation method designed to generate expressive dances, concurrently taking all three factors into account. Specifically, we mitigate the issue of speed homogenization by incorporating frequency information into VQ-VAE, thus improving dance dynamics. Additionally, we integrate music style information by extracting genre- and beat-related features with a pre-trained music model, hence achieving improvements in the other two factors. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method can generate dances with high expressiveness and outperforms existing methods both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Numerous studies in the field of music generation have demonstrated impressive performance, yet virtually no models are able to directly generate music to match accompanying videos. In this work, we develop a generative music AI framework, Video2Music, that can match a provided video. We first curated a unique collection of music videos. Then, we analysed the music videos to obtain semantic, scene offset, motion, and emotion features. These distinct features are then employed as guiding input to our music generation model. We transcribe the audio files into MIDI and chords, and extract features such as note density and loudness. This results in a rich multimodal dataset, called MuVi-Sync, on which we train a novel Affective Multimodal Transformer (AMT) model to generate music given a video. This model includes a novel mechanism to enforce affective similarity between video and music. Finally, post-processing is performed based on a biGRU-based regression model to estimate note density and loudness based on the video features. This ensures a dynamic rendering of the generated chords with varying rhythm and volume. In a thorough experiment, we show that our proposed framework can generate music that matches the video content in terms of emotion. The musical quality, along with the quality of music-video matching is confirmed in a user study. The proposed AMT model, along with the new MuVi-Sync dataset, presents a promising step for the new task of music generation for videos.
With rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence, the text-to-music synthesis task has emerged as a promising direction for music generation from scratch. However, finer-grained control over multi-track generation remains an open challenge. Existing models exhibit strong raw generation capability but lack the flexibility to compose separate tracks and combine them in a controllable manner, differing from typical workflows of human composers. To address this issue, we propose JEN-1 Composer, a unified framework to efficiently model marginal, conditional, and joint distributions over multi-track music via a single model. JEN-1 Composer framework exhibits the capacity to seamlessly incorporate any diffusion-based music generation system, \textit{e.g.} Jen-1, enhancing its capacity for versatile multi-track music generation. We introduce a curriculum training strategy aimed at incrementally instructing the model in the transition from single-track generation to the flexible generation of multi-track combinations. During the inference, users have the ability to iteratively produce and choose music tracks that meet their preferences, subsequently creating an entire musical composition incrementally following the proposed Human-AI co-composition workflow. Quantitative and qualitative assessments demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in controllable and high-fidelity multi-track music synthesis. The proposed JEN-1 Composer represents a significant advance toward interactive AI-facilitated music creation and composition. Demos will be available at https://www.jenmusic.ai/audio-demos.
Diffusion models have shown promising results for a wide range of generative tasks with continuous data, such as image and audio synthesis. However, little progress has been made on using diffusion models to generate discrete symbolic music because this new class of generative models are not well suited for discrete data while its iterative sampling process is computationally expensive. In this work, we propose a diffusion model combined with a Generative Adversarial Network, aiming to (i) alleviate one of the remaining challenges in algorithmic music generation which is the control of generation towards a target emotion, and (ii) mitigate the slow sampling drawback of diffusion models applied to symbolic music generation. We first used a trained Variational Autoencoder to obtain embeddings of a symbolic music dataset with emotion labels and then used those to train a diffusion model. Our results demonstrate the successful control of our diffusion model to generate symbolic music with a desired emotion. Our model achieves several orders of magnitude improvement in computational cost, requiring merely four time steps to denoise while the steps required by current state-of-the-art diffusion models for symbolic music generation is in the order of thousands.
Music has been commonly recognized as a means of expressing emotions. In this sense, an intense debate emerges from the need to verbalize musical emotions. This concern seems highly relevant today, considering the exponential growth of natural language processing using deep learning models where it is possible to prompt semantic propositions to generate music automatically. This scoping review aims to analyze and discuss the possibilities of music generation conditioned by emotions. To address this topic, we propose a historical perspective that encompasses the different disciplines and methods contributing to this topic. In detail, we review two main paradigms adopted in automatic music generation: rules-based and machine-learning models. Of note are the deep learning architectures that aim to generate high-fidelity music from textual descriptions. These models raise fundamental questions about the expressivity of music, including whether emotions can be represented with words or expressed through them. We conclude that overcoming the limitation and ambiguity of language to express emotions through music, some of the use of deep learning with natural language has the potential to impact the creative industries by providing powerful tools to prompt and generate new musical works.
This paper explores the modeling method of polyphonic music sequence. Due to the great potential of Transformer models in music generation, controllable music generation is receiving more attention. In the task of polyphonic music, current controllable generation research focuses on controlling the generation of chords, but lacks precise adjustment for the controllable generation of choral music textures. This paper proposed Condition Choir Transformer (CoCoFormer) which controls the output of the model by controlling the chord and rhythm inputs at a fine-grained level. In this paper, the self-supervised method improves the loss function and performs joint training through conditional control input and unconditional input training. In order to alleviate the lack of diversity on generated samples caused by the teacher forcing training, this paper added an adversarial training method. CoCoFormer enhances model performance with explicit and implicit inputs to chords and rhythms. In this paper, the experiments proves that CoCoFormer has reached the current better level than current models. On the premise of specifying the polyphonic music texture, the same melody can also be generated in a variety of ways.
There are two aspects of machine learning and artificial intelligence: (1) interpreting information, and (2) inventing new useful information. Much advance has been made for (1) with a focus on pattern recognition techniques (e.g., interpreting visual data). This paper focuses on (2) with intelligent duplication (ID) for invention. We explore the possibility of learning a specific individual's creative reasoning in order to leverage the learned expertise and talent to invent new information. More specifically, we employ a deep learning system to learn from the great composer Beethoven and capture his composition ability in a hash-based knowledge base. This new form of knowledge base provides a reasoning facility to drive the music composition through a novel music generation method.
Loopable music generation systems enable diverse applications, but they often lack controllability and customization capabilities. We argue that enhancing controllability can enrich these models, with emotional expression being a crucial aspect for both creators and listeners. Hence, building upon LooperGP, a loopable tablature generation model, this paper explores endowing systems with control over conveyed emotions. To enable such conditional generation, we propose integrating musical knowledge by utilizing multi-granular semantic and musical features during model training and inference. Specifically, we incorporate song-level features (Emotion Labels, Tempo, and Mode) and bar-level features (Tonal Tension) together to guide emotional expression. Through algorithmic and human evaluations, we demonstrate the approach's effectiveness in producing music conveying two contrasting target emotions, happiness and sadness. An ablation study is also conducted to clarify the contributing factors behind our approach's results.
