ControlDreamer: Stylized 3D Generation with Multi-View ControlNet

Recent advancements in text-to-3D generation have significantly contributed to the automation and democratization of 3D content creation. Building upon these developments, we aim to address the limitations of current methods in generating 3D models with creative geometry and styles. We introduce multi-view ControlNet, a novel depth-aware multi-view diffusion model trained on generated datasets from a carefully curated 100K text corpus. Our multi-view ControlNet is then integrated into our two-stage pipeline, ControlDreamer, enabling text-guided generation of stylized 3D models. Additionally, we present a comprehensive benchmark for 3D style editing, encompassing a broad range of subjects, including objects, animals, and characters, to further facilitate diverse 3D generation. Our comparative analysis reveals that this new pipeline outperforms existing text-to-3D methods as evidenced by qualitative comparisons and CLIP score metrics.

On the Analysis of Cross-Lingual Prompt Tuning for Decoder-based Multilingual Model

An exciting advancement in the field of multilingual models is the emergence of autoregressive models with zero- and few-shot capabilities, a phenomenon widely reported in large-scale language models. To further improve model adaptation to cross-lingual tasks, another trend is to further fine-tune the language models with either full fine-tuning or parameter-efficient tuning. However, the interaction between parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) and cross-lingual tasks in multilingual autoregressive models has yet to be studied. Specifically, we lack an understanding of the role of linguistic distributions in multilingual models in the effectiveness of token-based prompt tuning. To address this question, we conduct experiments comparing prompt tuning and fine-tuning on the decoder-based multilingual model, XGLM, with four cross-lingual tasks (XNLI, PAWS-X, POS, NER). According to our study, prompt tuning achieves on par or better performance over fine-tuning across all languages while updating at most 0.13\% of the model parameters. Moreover, we empirically show that prompt tuning is more effective in enhancing the performance of low-resource languages than fine-tuning. Our further analysis shows that the phenomenon is related to the tokenization scheme of the multilingual model.

Controlled Text Generation for Black-box Language Models via Score-based Progressive Editor

Despite recent progress in language models, generating constrained text for specific domains remains a challenge, particularly when utilizing black-box models that lack domain-specific knowledge. In this paper, we introduce ScoPE (Score-based Progressive Editor) generation, a novel approach for controlled text generation for black-box language models. We employ ScoPE to facilitate text generation in the target domain by integrating it with language models through a cascading approach. Trained to enhance the target domain score of the edited text, ScoPE progressively edits intermediate output discrete tokens to align with the target attributes throughout the auto-regressive generation process of the language model. This iterative process guides subsequent steps to produce desired output texts for the target domain. Our experimental results on diverse controlled generations demonstrate that ScoPE effectively facilitates controlled text generation for black-box language models in both in-domain and out-of-domain conditions, which is challenging for existing methods.

On the Powerfulness of Textual Outlier Exposure for Visual OoD Detection

Successful detection of Out-of-Distribution (OoD) data is becoming increasingly important to ensure safe deployment of neural networks. One of the main challenges in OoD detection is that neural networks output overconfident predictions on OoD data, make it difficult to determine OoD-ness of data solely based on their predictions. Outlier exposure addresses this issue by introducing an additional loss that encourages low-confidence predictions on OoD data during training. While outlier exposure has shown promising potential in improving OoD detection performance, all previous studies on outlier exposure have been limited to utilizing visual outliers. Drawing inspiration from the recent advancements in vision-language pre-training, this paper venture out to the uncharted territory of textual outlier exposure. First, we uncover the benefits of using textual outliers by replacing real or virtual outliers in the image-domain with textual equivalents. Then, we propose various ways of generating preferable textual outliers. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that generated textual outliers achieve competitive performance on large-scale OoD and hard OoD benchmarks. Furthermore, we conduct empirical analyses of textual outliers to provide primary criteria for designing advantageous textual outliers: near-distribution, descriptiveness, and inclusion of visual semantics.

PUCA: Patch-Unshuffle and Channel Attention for Enhanced Self-Supervised Image Denoising

Although supervised image denoising networks have shown remarkable performance on synthesized noisy images, they often fail in practice due to the difference between real and synthesized noise. Since clean-noisy image pairs from the real world are extremely costly to gather, self-supervised learning, which utilizes noisy input itself as a target, has been studied. To prevent a self-supervised denoising model from learning identical mapping, each output pixel should not be influenced by its corresponding input pixel; This requirement is known as J-invariance. Blind-spot networks (BSNs) have been a prevalent choice to ensure J-invariance in self-supervised image denoising. However, constructing variations of BSNs by injecting additional operations such as downsampling can expose blinded information, thereby violating J-invariance. Consequently, convolutions designed specifically for BSNs have been allowed only, limiting architectural flexibility. To overcome this limitation, we propose PUCA, a novel J-invariant U-Net architecture, for self-supervised denoising. PUCA leverages patch-unshuffle/shuffle to dramatically expand receptive fields while maintaining J-invariance and dilated attention blocks (DABs) for global context incorporation. Experimental results demonstrate that PUCA achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming existing methods in self-supervised image denoising.

1.5 million materials narratives generated by chatbots

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled a comprehensive exploration of materials for various applications. However, AI models often prioritize frequently encountered materials in the scientific literature, limiting the selection of suitable candidates based on inherent physical and chemical properties. To address this imbalance, we have generated a dataset of 1,494,017 natural language-material paragraphs based on combined OQMD, Materials Project, JARVIS, COD and AFLOW2 databases, which are dominated by ab initio calculations and tend to be much more evenly distributed on the periodic table. The generated text narratives were then polled and scored by both human experts and ChatGPT-4, based on three rubrics: technical accuracy, language and structure, and relevance and depth of content, showing similar scores but with human-scored depth of content being the most lagging. The merger of multi-modality data sources and large language model (LLM) holds immense potential for AI frameworks to help the exploration and discovery of solid-state materials for specific applications.

ProPILE: Probing Privacy Leakage in Large Language Models

The rapid advancement and widespread use of large language models (LLMs) have raised significant concerns regarding the potential leakage of personally identifiable information (PII). These models are often trained on vast quantities of web-collected data, which may inadvertently include sensitive personal data. This paper presents ProPILE, a novel probing tool designed to empower data subjects, or the owners of the PII, with awareness of potential PII leakage in LLM-based services. ProPILE lets data subjects formulate prompts based on their own PII to evaluate the level of privacy intrusion in LLMs. We demonstrate its application on the OPT-1.3B model trained on the publicly available Pile dataset. We show how hypothetical data subjects may assess the likelihood of their PII being included in the Pile dataset being revealed. ProPILE can also be leveraged by LLM service providers to effectively evaluate their own levels of PII leakage with more powerful prompts specifically tuned for their in-house models. This tool represents a pioneering step towards empowering the data subjects for their awareness and control over their own data on the web.

Mass Spectra Prediction with Structural Motif-based Graph Neural Networks

Mass spectra, which are agglomerations of ionized fragments from targeted molecules, play a crucial role across various fields for the identification of molecular structures. A prevalent analysis method involves spectral library searches,where unknown spectra are cross-referenced with a database. The effectiveness of such search-based approaches, however, is restricted by the scope of the existing mass spectra database, underscoring the need to expand the database via mass spectra prediction. In this research, we propose the Motif-based Mass Spectrum Prediction Network (MoMS-Net), a system that predicts mass spectra using the information derived from structural motifs and the implementation of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). We have tested our model across diverse mass spectra and have observed its superiority over other existing models. MoMS-Net considers substructure at the graph level, which facilitates the incorporation of long-range dependencies while using less memory compared to the graph transformer model.

UnitSpeech: Speaker-adaptive Speech Synthesis with Untranscribed Data

We propose UnitSpeech, a speaker-adaptive speech synthesis method that fine-tunes a diffusion-based text-to-speech (TTS) model using minimal untranscribed data. To achieve this, we use the self-supervised unit representation as a pseudo transcript and integrate the unit encoder into the pre-trained TTS model. We train the unit encoder to provide speech content to the diffusion-based decoder and then fine-tune the decoder for speaker adaptation to the reference speaker using a single $<$unit, speech$>$ pair. UnitSpeech performs speech synthesis tasks such as TTS and voice conversion (VC) in a personalized manner without requiring model re-training for each task. UnitSpeech achieves comparable and superior results on personalized TTS and any-to-any VC tasks compared to previous baselines. Our model also shows widespread adaptive performance on real-world data and other tasks that use a unit sequence as input.

Improving Visual Prompt Tuning for Self-supervised Vision Transformers

Visual Prompt Tuning (VPT) is an effective tuning method for adapting pretrained Vision Transformers (ViTs) to downstream tasks. It leverages extra learnable tokens, known as prompts, which steer the frozen pretrained ViTs. Although VPT has demonstrated its applicability with supervised vision transformers, it often underperforms with self-supervised ones. Through empirical observations, we deduce that the effectiveness of VPT hinges largely on the ViT blocks with which the prompt tokens interact. Specifically, VPT shows improved performance on image classification tasks for MAE and MoCo v3 when the prompt tokens are inserted into later blocks rather than the first block. These observations suggest that there exists an optimal location of blocks for the insertion of prompt tokens. Unfortunately, identifying the optimal blocks for prompts within each self-supervised ViT for diverse future scenarios is a costly process. To mitigate this problem, we propose a simple yet effective method that learns a gate for each ViT block to adjust its intervention into the prompt tokens. With our method, prompt tokens are selectively influenced by blocks that require steering for task adaptation.
