The Interplay of Harness Design and Post-Training in LLM Agents

Tool-integrated LLM agents are often wrapped within a harness: the scaffolding that determines which tools are exposed, how they are described, and what auxiliary information accompanies each per-step observation. While agents are routinely post-trained, this scaffolding is typically treated as a fixed engineering detail, with design effort limited to the training-free regime. Moreover, existing post-training algorithms assume a static environment, even though tool environments and tasks often shift upon deployment. To address this gap, we extend $\texttt{ALFWorld}$ (i) to treat the harness as a controllable design dimension and (ii) to support evaluation under task and tool environment shifts. Building on this, we systematically analyze how the harness design influences post-training in both in-distribution and out-of-distribution (OOD) settings. We empirically show that harness-aware post-training not only improves in-distribution performance but also enables agents to robustly adapt to OOD settings. Under a harness with minimal design effort, post-training suffers a drastic performance drop under stronger tool environment shifts, further highlighting the importance of harness-aware post-training under such shifts.

Concept Unlearning via Cross-Attention Activation Projection for Diffusion Models

Concept unlearning aims to erase a target concept from a pretrained text-to-image diffusion model without retraining. Closed-form methods are attractive in this setting because they apply a single deterministic edit to the cross-attention weights and add no inference-time cost. Existing closed-form methods, however, represent the target concept through the text encoder's response to a few short anchor prompts that name it, and paraphrased prompts that evoke the concept without naming it consistently bypass the edit. We argue that the target should instead be represented in the cross-attention activation space. Text embeddings describe the user's prompt, while cross-attention activations describe what the model is about to render, and the latter generalize to paraphrase the anchor templates do not cover. Building on this observation, we propose PURE (Projection in U-Net Rendering for Erasure), a closed-form method that builds the forget and retain bases from per-layer cross-attention activations captured along a short denoising trajectory and applies a single linear projector to the cross-attention key and value weights. On a recent holistic concept-unlearning benchmark covering ten concepts across artistic style, intellectual property, celebrity, and NSFW categories, PURE significantly reduces target leakage under paraphrased and adversarial prompts while preserving retain concepts close to the unedited model, yielding the best overall forget-retain trade-off among evaluated methods.

GelSphere: An Omnidirectional Rolling Vision-Based Tactile Sensor for Online 3D Reconstruction and Normal Force Estimation

We present GelSphere, a spherical vision-based tactile sensor designed for real-time continuous surface scanning. Unlike traditional vision-based tactile sensors that can only sense locally and are damaged when slid across surfaces, and cylindrical tactile sensors that can only roll along a fixed direction, our design enables omnidirectional rolling on surfaces. We accomplish this through our novel sensing system design, which has steel balls inside the sensor, forming a bearing layer between the gel and the rigid housing that allows rolling motion in all axes. The sensor streams tactile images through Wi-Fi, with online large-surface reconstruction capabilities. We present quantitative results for both reconstruction accuracy and image fusion performance. The results show that our sensor maintains geometric fidelity and high reconstruction accuracy even under multi-directional rolling, enabling uninterrupted surface scanning.

Refining Visual Artifacts in Diffusion Models via Explainable AI-based Flaw Activation Maps

Diffusion models have achieved remarkable success in image synthesis. However, addressing artifacts and unrealistic regions remains a critical challenge. We propose self-refining diffusion, a novel framework that enhances image generation quality by detecting these flaws. The framework employs an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based flaw highlighter to produce flaw activation maps (FAMs) that identify artifacts and unrealistic regions. These FAMs improve reconstruction quality by amplifying noise in flawed regions during the forward process and by focusing on these regions during the reverse process. The proposed approach achieves up to a 27.3% improvement in Fréchet inception distance across various diffusion-based models, demonstrating consistently strong performance on diverse datasets. It also shows robust effectiveness across different tasks, including image generation, text-to-image generation, and inpainting. These results demonstrate that explainable AI techniques can extend beyond interpretability to actively contribute to image refinement. The proposed framework offers a versatile and effective approach applicable to various diffusion models and tasks, significantly advancing the field of image synthesis.

MatteViT: High-Frequency-Aware Document Shadow Removal with Shadow Matte Guidance

Document shadow removal is essential for enhancing the clarity of digitized documents. Preserving high-frequency details (e.g., text edges and lines) is critical in this process because shadows often obscure or distort fine structures. This paper proposes a matte vision transformer (MatteViT), a novel shadow removal framework that applies spatial and frequency-domain information to eliminate shadows while preserving fine-grained structural details. To effectively retain these details, we employ two preservation strategies. First, our method introduces a lightweight high-frequency amplification module (HFAM) that decomposes and adaptively amplifies high-frequency components. Second, we present a continuous luminance-based shadow matte, generated using a custom-built matte dataset and shadow matte generator, which provides precise spatial guidance from the earliest processing stage. These strategies enable the model to accurately identify fine-grained regions and restore them with high fidelity. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks (RDD and Kligler) demonstrate that MatteViT achieves state-of-the-art performance, providing a robust and practical solution for real-world document shadow removal. Furthermore, the proposed method better preserves text-level details in downstream tasks, such as optical character recognition, improving recognition performance over prior methods.

NTIRE 2025 Image Shadow Removal Challenge Report

This work examines the findings of the NTIRE 2025 Shadow Removal Challenge. A total of 306 participants have registered, with 17 teams successfully submitting their solutions during the final evaluation phase. Following the last two editions, this challenge had two evaluation tracks: one focusing on reconstruction fidelity and the other on visual perception through a user study. Both tracks were evaluated with images from the WSRD+ dataset, simulating interactions between self- and cast-shadows with a large number of diverse objects, textures, and materials.
