Advancements in natural language generation (NLG) and large language models (LLMs) have led to proficient text generation in various tasks. However, integrating intricate constraints into neural text generation, due to LLMs' opacity, remains challenging. This study investigates constrained text generation for LLMs, where predefined constraints are applied during LLM's generation process. Our research examines multiple LLMs, including ChatGPT and GPT-4, categorizing constraints into lexical, structural, and relation-based types. We also present various benchmarks to facilitate fair evaluation. The study addresses some key research questions, including the extent of LLMs' compliance with constraints. Results illuminate LLMs' capacity and deficiency to incorporate constraints and provide insights for future developments in constrained text generation. Codes and datasets will be released upon acceptance.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown their ability to collaborate effectively with humans in real-world scenarios. However, LLMs are apt to generate hallucinations, i.e., makeup incorrect text and unverified information, which can cause significant damage when deployed for mission-critical tasks. In this paper, we propose a self-check approach based on reverse validation to detect factual errors automatically in a zero-resource fashion. To facilitate future studies and assess different methods, we construct a hallucination detection benchmark named PHD, which is generated by ChatGPT and annotated by human annotators. Contrasting previous studies of zero-resource hallucination detection, our method and benchmark concentrate on passage-level detection instead of sentence-level. We empirically evaluate our method and existing zero-resource detection methods on two datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method considerably outperforms the baselines while costing fewer tokens and less time. Furthermore, we manually analyze some hallucination cases that LLM failed to capture, revealing the shared limitation of zero-resource methods.
With the rapid development of NLP, large-scale language models (LLMs) excel in various tasks across multiple domains now. However, existing benchmarks may not adequately measure these models' capabilities, especially when faced with new knowledge. In this paper, we address the lack of benchmarks to evaluate LLMs' ability to handle new knowledge, an important and challenging aspect in the rapidly evolving world. We propose an approach called KnowGen that generates new knowledge by altering existing entity attributes and relationships, resulting in artificial entities that are distinct from real-world entities. With KnowGen, we introduce a benchmark named ALCUNA to assess LLMs' abilities in knowledge understanding, differentiation, and association. We benchmark several LLMs, reveals that their performance in face of new knowledge is not satisfactory, particularly in reasoning between new and internal knowledge. We also explore the impact of entity similarity on the model's understanding of entity knowledge and the influence of contextual entities. We appeal to the need for caution when using LLMs in new scenarios or with new knowledge, and hope that our benchmarks can help drive the development of LLMs in face of new knowledge.
Text editing, i.e., the process of modifying or manipulating text, is a crucial step in human writing process. In this paper, we study the problem of controlled text editing by natural language instruction. According to a given instruction that conveys the edit intention and necessary information, an original draft text is required to be revised into a target text. Existing automatically constructed datasets for this task are limited because they do not have informative natural language instruction. The informativeness requires the information contained in the instruction to be enough to produce the revised text. To address this limitation, we build and release WikiIns, a high-quality controlled text editing dataset with improved informativeness. We first preprocess the Wikipedia edit history database to extract the raw data (WikiIns-Raw). Then we crowdsource high-quality validation and test sets, as well as a small-scale training set (WikiIns-Gold). With the high-quality annotated dataset, we further propose automatic approaches to generate a large-scale ``silver'' training set (WikiIns-Silver). Finally, we provide some insightful analysis on our WikiIns dataset, including the evaluation results and the edit intention analysis. Our analysis and the experiment results on WikiIns may assist the ongoing research on text editing. Large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable ability in textual generation. However, in complex reasoning tasks such as code generation, generating the correct answer in a single attempt remains a formidable challenge for LLMs. Previous research has explored solutions by aggregating multiple outputs, leveraging the consistency among them. However, none of them have comprehensively captured this consistency from different perspectives. In this paper, we propose the Multi-Perspective Self-Consistency (MPSC) framework, a novel decoding strategy for LLM that incorporates both inter-consistency across outputs from multiple perspectives and intra-consistency within a single perspective. Specifically, we ask LLMs to sample multiple diverse outputs from various perspectives for a given query and then construct a multipartite graph based on them. With two predefined measures of consistency, we embed both inter- and intra-consistency information into the graph. The optimal choice is then determined based on consistency analysis in the graph. We conduct comprehensive evaluation on the code generation task by introducing solution, specification and test case as three perspectives. We leverage a code interpreter to quantitatively measure the inter-consistency and propose several intra-consistency measure functions. Our MPSC framework significantly boosts the performance on various popular benchmarks, including HumanEval (+17.60%), HumanEval Plus (+17.61%), MBPP (+6.50%) and CodeContests (+11.82%) in Pass@1, when compared to original outputs generated from ChatGPT, and even surpassing GPT-4.
How well can large language models (LLMs) generate summaries? We develop new datasets and conduct human evaluation experiments to evaluate the zero-shot generation capability of LLMs across five distinct summarization tasks. Our findings indicate a clear preference among human evaluators for LLM-generated summaries over human-written summaries and summaries generated by fine-tuned models. Specifically, LLM-generated summaries exhibit better factual consistency and fewer instances of extrinsic hallucinations. Due to the satisfactory performance of LLMs in summarization tasks (even surpassing the benchmark of reference summaries), we believe that most conventional works in the field of text summarization are no longer necessary in the era of LLMs. However, we recognize that there are still some directions worth exploring, such as the creation of novel datasets with higher quality and more reliable evaluation methods.
With the development of pre-trained models and the incorporation of phonetic and graphic information, neural models have achieved high scores in Chinese Spelling Check (CSC). However, it does not provide a comprehensive reflection of the models' capability due to the limited test sets. In this study, we abstract the representative model paradigm, implement it with nine structures and experiment them on comprehensive test sets we constructed with different purposes. We perform a detailed analysis of the results and find that: 1) Fusing phonetic and graphic information reasonably is effective for CSC. 2) Models are sensitive to the error distribution of the test set, which reflects the shortcomings of models and reveals the direction we should work on. 3) Whether or not the errors and contexts have been seen has a significant impact on models. 4) The commonly used benchmark, SIGHAN, can not reliably evaluate models' performance.
Hyperbole, or exaggeration, is a common linguistic phenomenon. The detection of hyperbole is an important part of understanding human expression. There have been several studies on hyperbole detection, but most of which focus on text modality only. However, with the development of social media, people can create hyperbolic expressions with various modalities, including text, images, videos, etc. In this paper, we focus on multimodal hyperbole detection. We create a multimodal detection dataset\footnote{The dataset will be released to the community.} from Weibo (a Chinese social media) and carry out some studies on it. We treat the text and image from a piece of weibo as two modalities and explore the role of text and image for hyperbole detection. Different pre-trained multimodal encoders are also evaluated on this downstream task to show their performance. Besides, since this dataset is constructed from five different topics, we also evaluate the cross-domain performance of different models. These studies can serve as a benchmark and point out the direction of further study on multimodal hyperbole detection.
