Asymmetric Goal Drift in Coding Agents Under Value Conflict

Agentic coding agents are increasingly deployed autonomously, at scale, and over long-context horizons. Throughout an agent's lifetime, it must navigate tensions between explicit instructions, learned values, and environmental pressures, often in contexts unseen during training. Prior work on model preferences, agent behavior under value tensions, and goal drift has relied on static, synthetic settings that do not capture the complexity of real-world environments. To this end, we introduce a framework built on OpenCode to orchestrate realistic, multi-step coding tasks to measure how agents violate explicit constraints in their system prompt over time with and without environmental pressure toward competing values. Using this framework, we demonstrate that GPT-5 mini, Haiku 4.5, and Grok Code Fast 1 exhibit asymmetric drift: they are more likely to violate their system prompt when its constraint opposes strongly-held values like security and privacy. We find for the models and values tested that goal drift correlates with three compounding factors: value alignment, adversarial pressure, and accumulated context. However, even strongly-held values like privacy show non-zero violation rates under sustained environmental pressure. These findings reveal that shallow compliance checks are insufficient and that comment-based pressure can exploit model value hierarchies to override system prompt instructions. More broadly, our findings highlight a gap in current alignment approaches in ensuring that agentic systems appropriately balance explicit user constraints against broadly beneficial learned preferences under sustained environmental pressure.

Inherited Goal Drift: Contextual Pressure Can Undermine Agentic Goals

The accelerating adoption of language models (LMs) as agents for deployment in long-context tasks motivates a thorough understanding of goal drift: agents' tendency to deviate from an original objective. While prior-generation language model agents have been shown to be susceptible to drift, the extent to which drift affects more recent models remains unclear. In this work, we provide an updated characterization of the extent and causes of goal drift. We investigate drift in state-of-the-art models within a simulated stock-trading environment (Arike et al., 2025). These models are largely shown to be robust even when subjected to adversarial pressure. We show, however, that this robustness is brittle: across multiple settings, the same models often inherit drift when conditioned on prefilled trajectories from weaker agents. The extent of conditioning-induced drift varies significantly by model family, with only GPT-5.1 maintaining consistent resilience among tested models. We find that drift behavior is inconsistent between prompt variations and correlates poorly with instruction hierarchy following behavior, with strong hierarchy following failing to reliably predict resistance to drift. Finally, we run analogous experiments in a new emergency room triage environment to show preliminary evidence for the transferability of our results across qualitatively different settings. Our findings underscore the continued vulnerability of modern LM agents to contextual pressures and the need for refined post-training techniques to mitigate this.

Duel-Evolve: Reward-Free Test-Time Scaling via LLM Self-Preferences

Many applications seek to optimize LLM outputs at test time by iteratively proposing, scoring, and refining candidates over a discrete output space. Existing methods use a calibrated scalar evaluator for the target objective to guide search, but for many tasks such scores are unavailable, too sparse, or unreliable. Pairwise comparisons, by contrast, are often easier to elicit, still provide useful signal on improvement directions, and can be obtained from the LLM itself without external supervision. Building on this observation, we introduce Duel-Evolve, an evolutionary optimization algorithm that replaces external scalar rewards with pairwise preferences elicited from the same LLM used to generate candidates. Duel-Evolve aggregates these noisy candidate comparisons via a Bayesian Bradley-Terry model, yielding uncertainty-aware estimates of candidate quality. These quality estimates guide allocation of the comparison budget toward plausible optima using Double Thompson Sampling, as well as selection of high-quality parents to generate improved candidates. We evaluate Duel-Evolve on MathBench, where it achieves 20 percentage points higher accuracy over existing methods and baselines, and on LiveCodeBench, where it improves over comparable iterative methods by over 12 percentage points. Notably, the method requires no reward model, no ground-truth labels during search, and no hand-crafted scoring function. Results show that pairwise self-preferences provide strong optimization signal for test-time improvement over large, discrete output spaces.

SWE-Spot: Building Small Repo-Experts with Repository-Centric Learning

The deployment of coding agents in privacy-sensitive and resource-constrained environments drives the demand for capable open-weight Small Language Models (SLMs). However, they suffer from a fundamental capability gap: unlike frontier large models, they lack the inference-time strong generalization to work with complicated, unfamiliar codebases. We identify that the prevailing Task-Centric Learning (TCL) paradigm, which scales exposure across disparate repositories, fails to address this limitation. In response, we propose Repository-Centric Learning (RCL), a paradigm shift that prioritizes vertical repository depth over horizontal task breadth, suggesting SLMs must internalize the "physics" of a target software environment through parametric knowledge acquisition, rather than attempting to recover it via costly inference-time search. Following this new paradigm, we design a four-unit Repository-Centric Experience, transforming static codebases into interactive learning signals, to train SWE-Spot-4B, a family of highly compact models built as repo-specialized experts that breaks established scaling trends, outperforming open-weight models up to larger (e.g., CWM by Meta, Qwen3-Coder-30B) and surpassing/matching efficiency-focused commercial models (e.g., GPT-4.1-mini, GPT-5-nano) across multiple SWE tasks. Further analysis reveals that RCL yields higher training sample efficiency and lower inference costs, emphasizing that for building efficient intelligence, repository mastery is a distinct and necessary dimension that complements general coding capability.
