HB-net: Holistic bursting cell cluster integrated network for occluded multi-objects recognition

Within the realm of image recognition, a specific category of multi-label classification (MLC) challenges arises when objects within the visual field may occlude one another, demanding simultaneous identification of both occluded and occluding objects. Traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can tackle these challenges; however, those models tend to be bulky and can only attain modest levels of accuracy. Leveraging insights from cutting-edge neural science research, specifically the Holistic Bursting (HB) cell, this paper introduces a pioneering integrated network framework named HB-net. Built upon the foundation of HB cell clusters, HB-net is designed to address the intricate task of simultaneously recognizing multiple occluded objects within images. Various Bursting cell cluster structures are introduced, complemented by an evidence accumulation mechanism. Testing is conducted on multiple datasets comprising digits and letters. The results demonstrate that models incorporating the HB framework exhibit a significant $2.98\%$ enhancement in recognition accuracy compared to models without the HB framework ($1.0298$ times, $p=0.0499$). Although in high-noise settings, standard CNNs exhibit slightly greater robustness when compared to HB-net models, the models that combine the HB framework and EA mechanism achieve a comparable level of accuracy and resilience to ResNet50, despite having only three convolutional layers and approximately $1/30$ of the parameters. Multi-channel deep convolutional neural networks for multi-classifying thyroid disease

Thyroid disease instances have been continuously increasing since the 1990s, and thyroid cancer has become the most rapidly rising disease among all the malignancies in recent years. Most existing studies focused on applying deep convolutional neural networks for detecting thyroid cancer. Despite their satisfactory performance on binary classification tasks, limited studies have explored multi-class classification of thyroid disease types; much less is known of the diagnosis of co-existence situation for different types of thyroid diseases. Therefore, this study proposed a novel multi-channel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to address the multi-class classification task of thyroid disease. The multi-channel CNN merits from computed tomography to drive a comprehensive diagnostic decision for the overall thyroid gland, emphasizing the disease co-existence circumstance. Moreover, this study also examined alternative strategies to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of CNN models through concatenation of different scales of feature maps. Benchmarking experiments demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed multi-channel CNN architecture compared with the standard single-channel CNN architecture. More specifically, the multi-channel CNN achieved an accuracy of 0.909, precision of 0.944, recall of 0.896, specificity of 0.994, and F1 of 0.917, in contrast to the single-channel CNN, which obtained 0.902, 0.892, 0.909, 0.993, 0.898, respectively. In addition, the proposed model was evaluated in different gender groups; it reached a diagnostic accuracy of 0.908 for the female group and 0.901 for the male group. Collectively, the results highlight that the proposed multi-channel CNN has excellent generalization and has the potential to be deployed to provide computational decision support in clinical settings.

Exploiting Review Neighbors for Contextualized Helpfulness Prediction

Helpfulness prediction techniques have been widely used to identify and recommend high-quality online reviews to customers. Currently, the vast majority of studies assume that a review's helpfulness is self-contained. In practice, however, customers hardly process reviews independently given the sequential nature. The perceived helpfulness of a review is likely to be affected by its sequential neighbors (i.e., context), which has been largely ignored. This paper proposes a new methodology to capture the missing interaction between reviews and their neighbors. The first end-to-end neural architecture is developed for neighbor-aware helpfulness prediction (NAP). For each review, NAP allows for three types of neighbor selection: its preceding, following, and surrounding neighbors. Four weighting schemes are designed to learn context clues from the selected neighbors. A review is then contextualized into the learned clues for neighbor-aware helpfulness prediction. NAP is evaluated on six domains of real-world online reviews against a series of state-of-the-art baselines. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of NAP and the influence of sequential neighbors on a current reviews. Further hyperparameter analysis reveals three main findings. (1) On average, eight neighbors treated with uneven importance are engaged for context construction. (2) The benefit of neighbor-aware prediction mainly results from closer neighbors. (3) Equally considering up to five closest neighbors of a review can usually produce a weaker but tolerable prediction result.
