CompRank: Efficient LLM Reranking via Token-Level Compression and Decoding-Free Scoring

Large language model (LLM) rerankers have become an important component of modern retrieval and retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, but their high computational cost limits their applicability to long candidate lists. In this paper, we propose \textbf{CompRank}, a token-efficient reranking framework that reduces redundant computation by aligning reranker design with the sparsity of ranking signals. CompRank decouples document representations from candidate order and query context, enabling reusable document-side states; applies segment-wise token compression to reduce query--document interaction cost; and introduces a CopyNet-style objective that directly aligns attention-based document scoring with training supervision. Experiments on seven BEIR datasets show that CompRank achieves strong reranking performance while retaining only 10.2\% of document tokens, reaching an average NDCG@10 of 39.2 compared with 39.7 under full-token attention. Further scaling experiments on TREC-COVID show that CompRank remains stable when evaluated on candidate lists of up to 500 documents after training on 30-document lists, while achieving $4.9\times$--$9.5\times$ end-to-end speedup over generation-based listwise reranking and approximately $1.3\times$ speedup over the full-token CompRank variant. These results suggest that token-level compression and decoding-free attention scoring provide an effective path toward scalable LLM-based reranking.

MMEB-V3: Measuring the Performance Gaps of Omni-Modality Embedding Models

Multimodal embedding models aim to map heterogeneous inputs, such as text, images, videos, and audio, into a shared semantic space. However, existing methods and benchmarks remain largely limited to partial modality coverage, making it difficult to systematically evaluate full-modality representation learning. In this work, we take a step toward the full-modality setting. We introduce MMEB-V3, a comprehensive benchmark that evaluates embeddings across text, image, video, audio, as well as agent-centric scenarios. To enable more fine-grained diagnosis, we further construct OmniSET (Omni-modality Semantic Equivalence Tuples), where semantically equivalent instances are represented across modalities, allowing us to disentangle semantic similarity from modality effects. Through experiments on MMEB-V3, we conduct a systematic analysis of full-modality embeddings and identify three key findings: (1) models often fail to retrieve the intended target modality; (2) cross-modal retrieval is highly asymmetric and dominated by query-modality bias; and (3) instruction-induced shifts are either insufficient or misaligned with the target modality, and therefore do not reliably improve retrieval. These results indicate that current multimodal embeddings are not yet capable of reliably enforcing modality constraints specified by instructions, and consequently fail to exhibit consistent modality-aware retrieval behavior. We hope MMEB-V3 provides a useful benchmark for understanding and diagnosing these limitations, and for guiding future research on full-modality embeddings.

Marker-Based 3D Reconstruction of Aggregates with a Comparative Analysis of 2D and 3D Morphologies

Aggregates, serving as the main skeleton in assemblies of construction materials, are important functional components in various building and transportation infrastructures. They can be used in unbound layer applications, e.g. pavement base and railroad ballast, bound applications of cement concrete and asphalt concrete, and as riprap and large-sized primary crushed rocks. Information on the size and shape or morphology of aggregates can greatly facilitate the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process by providing insights of aggregate behavior during composition and packing. A full 3D characterization of aggregate particle morphology is difficult both during production in a quarry and at a construction site. Many aggregate imaging approaches have been developed to quantify the particle morphology by computer vision, including 2D image-based approaches that analyze particle silhouettes and 3D scanning-based methods that require expensive devices such as 3D laser scanners or X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT) equipment. This paper presents a flexible and cost-effective photogrammetry-based approach for the 3D reconstruction of aggregate particles. The proposed approach follows a marker-based design that enables background suppression, point cloud stitching, and scale referencing to obtain high-quality aggregate models. The accuracy of the reconstruction results was validated against ground-truth for selected aggregate samples. Comparative analyses were conducted on 2D and 3D morphological properties of the selected samples. Significant differences were found between the 2D and 3D statistics. Based on the presented approach, 3D shape information of aggregates can be obtained easily and at a low cost, thus allowing convenient aggregate inspection, data collection, and 3D morphological analysis.

Field imaging framework for morphological characterization of aggregates with computer vision: Algorithms and applications

Construction aggregates, including sand and gravel, crushed stone and riprap, are the core building blocks of the construction industry. State-of-the-practice characterization methods mainly relies on visual inspection and manual measurement. State-of-the-art aggregate imaging methods have limitations that are only applicable to regular-sized aggregates under well-controlled conditions. This dissertation addresses these major challenges by developing a field imaging framework for the morphological characterization of aggregates as a multi-scenario solution. For individual and non-overlapping aggregates, a field imaging system was designed and the associated segmentation and volume estimation algorithms were developed. For 2D image analyses of aggregates in stockpiles, an automated 2D instance segmentation and morphological analysis approach was established. For 3D point cloud analyses of aggregate stockpiles, an integrated 3D Reconstruction-Segmentation-Completion (RSC-3D) approach was established: 3D reconstruction procedures from multi-view images, 3D stockpile instance segmentation, and 3D shape completion to predict the unseen sides. First, a 3D reconstruction procedure was developed to obtain high-fidelity 3D models of collected aggregate samples, based on which a 3D aggregate particle library was constructed. Next, two datasets were derived from the 3D particle library for 3D learning: a synthetic dataset of aggregate stockpiles with ground-truth instance labels, and a dataset of partial-complete shape pairs, developed with varying-view raycasting schemes. A state-of-the-art 3D instance segmentation network and a 3D shape completion network were trained on the datasets, respectively. The application of the integrated approach was demonstrated on real stockpiles and validated with ground-truth, showing good performance in capturing and predicting the unseen sides of aggregates.

Beyond Global Similarity: Towards Fine-Grained, Multi-Condition Multimodal Retrieval

Recent advances in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have substantially expanded the capabilities of multimodal retrieval, enabling systems to align and retrieve information across visual and textual modalities. Yet, existing benchmarks largely focus on coarse-grained or single-condition alignment, overlooking real-world scenarios where user queries specify multiple interdependent constraints across modalities. To bridge this gap, we introduce MCMR (Multi-Conditional Multimodal Retrieval): a large-scale benchmark designed to evaluate fine-grained, multi-condition cross-modal retrieval under natural-language queries. MCMR spans five product domains: upper and bottom clothing, jewelry, shoes, and furniture. It also preserves rich long-form metadata essential for compositional matching. Each query integrates complementary visual and textual attributes, requiring models to jointly satisfy all specified conditions for relevance. We benchmark a diverse suite of MLLM-based multimodal retrievers and vision-language rerankers to assess their condition-aware reasoning abilities. Experimental results reveal: (i) distinct modality asymmetries across models; (ii) visual cues dominate early-rank precision, while textual metadata stabilizes long-tail ordering; and (iii) MLLM-based pointwise rerankers markedly improve fine-grained matching by explicitly verifying query-candidate consistency. Overall, MCMR establishes a challenging and diagnostic benchmark for advancing multimodal retrieval toward compositional, constraint-aware, and interpretable understanding. Tools are under-documented: Simple Document Expansion Boosts Tool Retrieval

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently demonstrated strong capabilities in tool use, yet progress in tool retrieval remains hindered by incomplete and heterogeneous tool documentation. To address this challenge, we introduce Tool-DE, a new benchmark and framework that systematically enriches tool documentation with structured fields to enable more effective tool retrieval, together with two dedicated models, Tool-Embed and Tool-Rank. We design a scalable document expansion pipeline that leverages both open- and closed-source LLMs to generate, validate, and refine enriched tool profiles at low cost, producing large-scale corpora with 50k instances for embedding-based retrievers and 200k for rerankers. On top of this data, we develop two models specifically tailored for tool retrieval: Tool-Embed, a dense retriever, and Tool-Rank, an LLM-based reranker. Extensive experiments on ToolRet and Tool-DE demonstrate that document expansion substantially improves retrieval performance, with Tool-Embed and Tool-Rank achieving new state-of-the-art results on both benchmarks. We further analyze the contribution of individual fields to retrieval effectiveness, as well as the broader impact of document expansion on both training and evaluation. Overall, our findings highlight both the promise and limitations of LLM-driven document expansion, positioning Tool-DE, along with the proposed Tool-Embed and Tool-Rank, as a foundation for future research in tool retrieval.
