Training-Free Object-Background Compositional T2I via Dynamic Spatial Guidance and Multi-Path Pruning

Existing text-to-image diffusion models, while excelling at subject synthesis, exhibit a persistent foreground bias that treats the background as a passive and under-optimized byproduct. This imbalance compromises global scene coherence and constrains compositional control. To address the limitation, we propose a training-free framework that restructures diffusion sampling to explicitly account for foreground-background interactions. Our approach consists of two key components. First, Dynamic Spatial Guidance introduces a soft, time step dependent gating mechanism that modulates foreground and background attention during the diffusion process, enabling spatially balanced generation. Second, Multi-Path Pruning performs multi-path latent exploration and dynamically filters candidate trajectories using both internal attention statistics and external semantic alignment signals, retaining trajectories that better satisfy object-background constraints. We further develop a benchmark specifically designed to evaluate object-background compositionality. Extensive evaluations across multiple diffusion backbones demonstrate consistent improvements in background coherence and object-background compositional alignment.

By-Example Synthesis of Vector Textures

We propose a new method for synthesizing an arbitrarily sized novel vector texture given a single raster exemplar. Our method first segments the exemplar to extract the primary textons, and then clusters them based on visual similarity. We then compute a descriptor to capture each texton's neighborhood which contains the inter-category relationships that are used at synthesis time. Next, we use a simple procedure to both extract and place the secondary textons behind the primary polygons. Finally, our method constructs a gradient field for the background which is defined by a set of data points and colors. The color of the secondary polygons are also adjusted to better match the gradient field. To compare our work with other methods, we use a wide range of perceptual-based metrics.

NPRportrait 1.0: A Three-Level Benchmark for Non-Photorealistic Rendering of Portraits

Despite the recent upsurge of activity in image-based non-photorealistic rendering (NPR), and in particular portrait image stylisation, due to the advent of neural style transfer, the state of performance evaluation in this field is limited, especially compared to the norms in the computer vision and machine learning communities. Unfortunately, the task of evaluating image stylisation is thus far not well defined, since it involves subjective, perceptual and aesthetic aspects. To make progress towards a solution, this paper proposes a new structured, three level, benchmark dataset for the evaluation of stylised portrait images. Rigorous criteria were used for its construction, and its consistency was validated by user studies. Moreover, a new methodology has been developed for evaluating portrait stylisation algorithms, which makes use of the different benchmark levels as well as annotations provided by user studies regarding the characteristics of the faces. We perform evaluation for a wide variety of image stylisation methods (both portrait-specific and general purpose, and also both traditional NPR approaches and neural style transfer) using the new benchmark dataset.
