Analysis of Utterance Embeddings and Clustering Methods Related to Intent Induction for Task-Oriented Dialogue

This paper investigates unsupervised approaches to overcome quintessential challenges in designing task-oriented dialog schema: assigning intent labels to each dialog turn (intent clustering) and generating a set of intents based on the intent clustering methods (intent induction). We postulate there are two salient factors for automatic induction of intents: (1) clustering algorithm for intent labeling and (2) user utterance embedding space. We compare existing off-the-shelf clustering models and embeddings based on DSTC11 evaluation. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that we sholud add two huge caveat that selection of utterance embedding and clustering method in intent induction task should be very careful. We also present that pretrained MiniLM with Agglomerative clustering shows significant improvement in NMI, ARI, F1, accuracy and example coverage in intent induction tasks. QUAK: A Synthetic Quality Estimation Dataset for Korean-English Neural Machine Translation

With the recent advance in neural machine translation demonstrating its importance, research on quality estimation (QE) has been steadily progressing. QE aims to automatically predict the quality of machine translation (MT) output without reference sentences. Despite its high utility in the real world, there remain several limitations concerning manual QE data creation: inevitably incurred non-trivial costs due to the need for translation experts, and issues with data scaling and language expansion. To tackle these limitations, we present QUAK, a Korean-English synthetic QE dataset generated in a fully automatic manner. This consists of three sub-QUAK datasets QUAK-M, QUAK-P, and QUAK-H, produced through three strategies that are relatively free from language constraints. Since each strategy requires no human effort, which facilitates scalability, we scale our data up to 1.58M for QUAK-P, H and 6.58M for QUAK-M. As an experiment, we quantitatively analyze word-level QE results in various ways while performing statistical analysis. Moreover, we show that datasets scaled in an efficient way also contribute to performance improvements by observing meaningful performance gains in QUAK-M, P when adding data up to 1.58M.

Language Chameleon: Transformation analysis between languages using Cross-lingual Post-training based on Pre-trained language models

As pre-trained language models become more resource-demanding, the inequality between resource-rich languages such as English and resource-scarce languages is worsening. This can be attributed to the fact that the amount of available training data in each language follows the power-law distribution, and most of the languages belong to the long tail of the distribution. Some research areas attempt to mitigate this problem. For example, in cross-lingual transfer learning and multilingual training, the goal is to benefit long-tail languages via the knowledge acquired from resource-rich languages. Although being successful, existing work has mainly focused on experimenting on as many languages as possible. As a result, targeted in-depth analysis is mostly absent. In this study, we focus on a single low-resource language and perform extensive evaluation and probing experiments using cross-lingual post-training (XPT). To make the transfer scenario challenging, we choose Korean as the target language, as it is a language isolate and thus shares almost no typology with English. Results show that XPT not only outperforms or performs on par with monolingual models trained with orders of magnitudes more data but also is highly efficient in the transfer process.

Don't Judge a Language Model by Its Last Layer: Contrastive Learning with Layer-Wise Attention Pooling

Recent pre-trained language models (PLMs) achieved great success on many natural language processing tasks through learning linguistic features and contextualized sentence representation. Since attributes captured in stacked layers of PLMs are not clearly identified, straightforward approaches such as embedding the last layer are commonly preferred to derive sentence representations from PLMs. This paper introduces the attention-based pooling strategy, which enables the model to preserve layer-wise signals captured in each layer and learn digested linguistic features for downstream tasks. The contrastive learning objective can adapt the layer-wise attention pooling to both unsupervised and supervised manners. It results in regularizing the anisotropic space of pre-trained embeddings and being more uniform. We evaluate our model on standard semantic textual similarity (STS) and semantic search tasks. As a result, our method improved the performance of the base contrastive learned BERT_base and variants.

GRASP: Guiding model with RelAtional Semantics using Prompt

The dialogue-based relation extraction (DialogRE) task aims to predict the relations between argument pairs that appear in dialogue. Most previous studies utilize fine-tuning pre-trained language models (PLMs) only with extensive features to supplement the low information density of the dialogue by multiple speakers. To effectively exploit inherent knowledge of PLMs without extra layers and consider scattered semantic cues on the relation between the arguments, we propose a Guiding model with RelAtional Semantics using Prompt (GRASP). We adopt a prompt-based fine-tuning approach and capture relational semantic clues of a given dialogue with 1) an argument-aware prompt marker strategy and 2) the relational clue detection task. In the experiments, GRASP achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of both F1 and F1c scores on a DialogRE dataset even though our method only leverages PLMs without adding any extra layers.

Multimodal Frame-Scoring Transformer for Video Summarization

As the number of video content has mushroomed in recent years, automatic video summarization has come useful when we want to just peek at the content of the video. However, there are two underlying limitations in generic video summarization task. First, most previous approaches read in just visual features as input, leaving other modality features behind. Second, existing datasets for generic video summarization are relatively insufficient to train a caption generator and multimodal feature extractors. To address these two problems, this paper proposes the Multimodal Frame-Scoring Transformer (MFST) framework exploiting visual, text and audio features and scoring a video with respect to frames. Our MFST framework first extracts each modality features (visual-text-audio) using pretrained encoders. Then, MFST trains the multimodal frame-scoring transformer that uses video-text-audio representations as inputs and predicts frame-level scores. Our extensive experiments with previous models and ablation studies on TVSum and SumMe datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed method.

Empirical study on BlenderBot 2.0 Errors Analysis in terms of Model, Data and User-Centric Approach

BlenderBot 2.0 is a dialogue model that represents open-domain chatbots by reflecting real-time information and remembering user information for an extended period using an internet search module and multi-session. Nonetheless, the model still has room for improvement. To this end, we examined BlenderBot 2.0 limitations and errors from three perspectives: model, data, and user. From the data point of view, we highlight the unclear guidelines provided to workers during the crowdsourcing process, as well as a lack of a process for refining hate speech in the collected data and verifying the accuracy of internet-based information. From a user perspective, we identify nine types of problems of BlenderBot 2.0, and their causes are thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, for each point of view, practical improvement methods are proposed, and we discuss several potential future research directions.

Call for Customized Conversation: Customized Conversation Grounding Persona and Knowledge

Humans usually have conversations by making use of prior knowledge about a topic and background information of the people whom they are talking to. However, existing conversational agents and datasets do not consider such comprehensive information, and thus they have a limitation in generating the utterances where the knowledge and persona are fused properly. To address this issue, we introduce a call For Customized conversation (FoCus) dataset where the customized answers are built with the user's persona and Wikipedia knowledge. To evaluate the abilities to make informative and customized utterances of pre-trained language models, we utilize BART and GPT-2 as well as transformer-based models. We assess their generation abilities with automatic scores and conduct human evaluations for qualitative results. We examine whether the model reflects adequate persona and knowledge with our proposed two sub-tasks, persona grounding (PG) and knowledge grounding (KG). Moreover, we show that the utterances of our data are constructed with the proper knowledge and persona through grounding quality assessment.

FreeTalky: Don't Be Afraid! Conversations Made Easier by a Humanoid Robot using Persona-based Dialogue

We propose a deep learning-based foreign language learning platform, named FreeTalky, for people who experience anxiety dealing with foreign languages, by employing a humanoid robot NAO and various deep learning models. A persona-based dialogue system that is embedded in NAO provides an interesting and consistent multi-turn dialogue for users. Also, an grammar error correction system promotes improvement in grammar skills of the users. Thus, our system enables personalized learning based on persona dialogue and facilitates grammar learning of a user using grammar error feedback. Furthermore, we verified whether FreeTalky provides practical help in alleviating xenoglossophobia by replacing the real human in the conversation with a NAO robot, through human evaluation.

A Self-Supervised Automatic Post-Editing Data Generation Tool

Data building for automatic post-editing (APE) requires extensive and expert-level human effort, as it contains an elaborate process that involves identifying errors in sentences and providing suitable revisions. Hence, we develop a self-supervised data generation tool, deployable as a web application, that minimizes human supervision and constructs personalized APE data from a parallel corpus for several language pairs with English as the target language. Data-centric APE research can be conducted using this tool, involving many language pairs that have not been studied thus far owing to the lack of suitable data.
