An Experimentation Platform for Explainable Coalition Situational Understanding

We present an experimentation platform for coalition situational understanding research that highlights capabilities in explainable artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and integration of symbolic and subsymbolic AI/ML approaches for event processing. The Situational Understanding Explorer (SUE) platform is designed to be lightweight, to easily facilitate experiments and demonstrations, and open. We discuss our requirements to support coalition multi-domain operations with emphasis on asset interoperability and ad hoc human-machine teaming in a dense urban terrain setting. We describe the interface functionality and give examples of SUE applied to coalition situational understanding tasks.

Predicting Themes within Complex Unstructured Texts: A Case Study on Safeguarding Reports

The task of text and sentence classification is associated with the need for large amounts of labelled training data. The acquisition of high volumes of labelled datasets can be expensive or unfeasible, especially for highly-specialised domains for which documents are hard to obtain. Research on the application of supervised classification based on small amounts of training data is limited. In this paper, we address the combination of state-of-the-art deep learning and classification methods and provide an insight into what combination of methods fit the needs of small, domain-specific, and terminologically-rich corpora. We focus on a real-world scenario related to a collection of safeguarding reports comprising learning experiences and reflections on tackling serious incidents involving children and vulnerable adults. The relatively small volume of available reports and their use of highly domain-specific terminology makes the application of automated approaches difficult. We focus on the problem of automatically identifying the main themes in a safeguarding report using supervised classification approaches. Our results show the potential of deep learning models to simulate subject-expert behaviour even for complex tasks with limited labelled data.

A Hybrid Neuro-Symbolic Approach for Complex Event Processing

Training a model to detect patterns of interrelated events that form situations of interest can be a complex problem: such situations tend to be uncommon, and only sparse data is available. We propose a hybrid neuro-symbolic architecture based on Event Calculus that can perform Complex Event Processing (CEP). It leverages both a neural network to interpret inputs and logical rules that express the pattern of the complex event. Our approach is capable of training with much fewer labelled data than a pure neural network approach, and to learn to classify individual events even when training in an end-to-end manner. We demonstrate this comparing our approach against a pure neural network approach on a dataset based on Urban Sounds 8K.

Explaining Motion Relevance for Activity Recognition in Video Deep Learning Models

A small subset of explainability techniques developed initially for image recognition models has recently been applied for interpretability of 3D Convolutional Neural Network models in activity recognition tasks. Much like the models themselves, the techniques require little or no modification to be compatible with 3D inputs. However, these explanation techniques regard spatial and temporal information jointly. Therefore, using such explanation techniques, a user cannot explicitly distinguish the role of motion in a 3D model's decision. In fact, it has been shown that these models do not appropriately factor motion information into their decision. We propose a selective relevance method for adapting the 2D explanation techniques to provide motion-specific explanations, better aligning them with the human understanding of motion as conceptually separate from static spatial features. We demonstrate the utility of our method in conjunction with several widely-used 2D explanation methods, and show that it improves explanation selectivity for motion. Our results show that the selective relevance method can not only provide insight on the role played by motion in the model's decision -- in effect, revealing and quantifying the model's spatial bias -- but the method also simplifies the resulting explanations for human consumption.

The current state of automated argumentation theory: a literature review

Automated negotiation can be an efficient method for resolving conflict and redistributing resources in a coalition setting. Automated negotiation has already seen increased usage in fields such as e-commerce and power distribution in smart girds, and recent advancements in opponent modelling have proven to deliver better outcomes. However, significant barriers to more widespread adoption remain, such as lack of predictable outcome over time and user trust. Additionally, there have been many recent advancements in the field of reasoning about uncertainty, which could help alleviate both those problems. As there is no recent survey on these two fields, and specifically not on their possible intersection we aim to provide such a survey here.

Increasing negotiation performance at the edge of the network

Automated negotiation has been used in a variety of distributed settings, such as privacy in the Internet of Things (IoT) devices and power distribution in Smart Grids. The most common protocol under which these agents negotiate is the Alternating Offers Protocol (AOP). Under this protocol, agents cannot express any additional information to each other besides a counter offer. This can lead to unnecessarily long negotiations when, for example, negotiations are impossible, risking to waste bandwidth that is a precious resource at the edge of the network. While alternative protocols exist which alleviate this problem, these solutions are too complex for low power devices, such as IoT sensors operating at the edge of the network. To improve this bottleneck, we introduce an extension to AOP called Alternating Constrained Offers Protocol (ACOP), in which agents can also express constraints to each other. This allows agents to both search the possibility space more efficiently and recognise impossible situations sooner. We empirically show that agents using ACOP can significantly reduce the number of messages a negotiation takes, independently of the strategy agents choose. In particular, we show our method significantly reduces the number of messages when an agreement is not possible. Furthermore, when an agreement is possible it reaches this agreement sooner with no negative effect on the utility.

Sanity Checks for Saliency Metrics

Saliency maps are a popular approach to creating post-hoc explanations of image classifier outputs. These methods produce estimates of the relevance of each pixel to the classification output score, which can be displayed as a saliency map that highlights important pixels. Despite a proliferation of such methods, little effort has been made to quantify how good these saliency maps are at capturing the true relevance of the pixels to the classifier output (i.e. their "fidelity"). We therefore investigate existing metrics for evaluating the fidelity of saliency methods (i.e. saliency metrics). We find that there is little consistency in the literature in how such metrics are calculated, and show that such inconsistencies can have a significant effect on the measured fidelity. Further, we apply measures of reliability developed in the psychometric testing literature to assess the consistency of saliency metrics when applied to individual saliency maps. Our results show that saliency metrics can be statistically unreliable and inconsistent, indicating that comparative rankings between saliency methods generated using such metrics can be untrustworthy.
