Give me scissors: Collision-Free Dual-Arm Surgical Assistive Robot for Instrument Delivery

During surgery, scrub nurses are required to frequently deliver surgical instruments to surgeons, which can lead to physical fatigue and decreased focus. Robotic scrub nurses provide a promising solution that can replace repetitive tasks and enhance efficiency. Existing research on robotic scrub nurses relies on predefined paths for instrument delivery, which limits their generalizability and poses safety risks in dynamic environments. To address these challenges, we present a collision-free dual-arm surgical assistive robot capable of performing instrument delivery. A vision-language model is utilized to automatically generate the robot's grasping and delivery trajectories in a zero-shot manner based on surgeons' instructions. A real-time obstacle minimum distance perception method is proposed and integrated into a unified quadratic programming framework. This framework ensures reactive obstacle avoidance and self-collision prevention during the dual-arm robot's autonomous movement in dynamic environments. Extensive experimental validations demonstrate that the proposed robotic system achieves an 83.33% success rate in surgical instrument delivery while maintaining smooth, collision-free movement throughout all trials. Tracking spatial temporal details in ultrasound long video via wavelet analysis and memory bank

Medical ultrasound videos are widely used for medical inspections, disease diagnosis and surgical planning. High-fidelity lesion area and target organ segmentation constitutes a key component of the computer-assisted surgery workflow. The low contrast levels and noisy backgrounds of ultrasound videos cause missegmentation of organ boundary, which may lead to small object losses and increase boundary segmentation errors. Object tracking in long videos also remains a significant research challenge. To overcome these challenges, we propose a memory bank-based wavelet filtering and fusion network, which adopts an encoder-decoder structure to effectively extract fine-grained detailed spatial features and integrate high-frequency (HF) information. Specifically, memory-based wavelet convolution is presented to simultaneously capture category, detailed information and utilize adjacent information in the encoder. Cascaded wavelet compression is used to fuse multiscale frequency-domain features and expand the receptive field within each convolutional layer. A long short-term memory bank using cross-attention and memory compression mechanisms is designed to track objects in long video. To fully utilize the boundary-sensitive HF details of feature maps, an HF-aware feature fusion module is designed via adaptive wavelet filters in the decoder. In extensive benchmark tests conducted on four ultrasound video datasets (two thyroid nodule, the thyroid gland, the heart datasets) compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our method demonstrates marked improvements in segmentation metrics. In particular, our method can more accurately segment small thyroid nodules, demonstrating its effectiveness for cases involving small ultrasound objects in long video. TCFNet: Bidirectional face-bone transformation via a Transformer-based coarse-to-fine point movement network

Computer-aided surgical simulation is a critical component of orthognathic surgical planning, where accurately simulating face-bone shape transformations is significant. The traditional biomechanical simulation methods are limited by their computational time consumption levels, labor-intensive data processing strategies and low accuracy. Recently, deep learning-based simulation methods have been proposed to view this problem as a point-to-point transformation between skeletal and facial point clouds. However, these approaches cannot process large-scale points, have limited receptive fields that lead to noisy points, and employ complex preprocessing and postprocessing operations based on registration. These shortcomings limit the performance and widespread applicability of such methods. Therefore, we propose a Transformer-based coarse-to-fine point movement network (TCFNet) to learn unique, complicated correspondences at the patch and point levels for dense face-bone point cloud transformations. This end-to-end framework adopts a Transformer-based network and a local information aggregation network (LIA-Net) in the first and second stages, respectively, which reinforce each other to generate precise point movement paths. LIA-Net can effectively compensate for the neighborhood precision loss of the Transformer-based network by modeling local geometric structures (edges, orientations and relative position features). The previous global features are employed to guide the local displacement using a gated recurrent unit. Inspired by deformable medical image registration, we propose an auxiliary loss that can utilize expert knowledge for reconstructing critical organs.Compared with the existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods on gathered datasets, TCFNet achieves outstanding evaluation metrics and visualization results. UTSRMorph: A Unified Transformer and Superresolution Network for Unsupervised Medical Image Registration

Complicated image registration is a key issue in medical image analysis, and deep learning-based methods have achieved better results than traditional methods. The methods include ConvNet-based and Transformer-based methods. Although ConvNets can effectively utilize local information to reduce redundancy via small neighborhood convolution, the limited receptive field results in the inability to capture global dependencies. Transformers can establish long-distance dependencies via a self-attention mechanism; however, the intense calculation of the relationships among all tokens leads to high redundancy. We propose a novel unsupervised image registration method named the unified Transformer and superresolution (UTSRMorph) network, which can enhance feature representation learning in the encoder and generate detailed displacement fields in the decoder to overcome these problems. We first propose a fusion attention block to integrate the advantages of ConvNets and Transformers, which inserts a ConvNet-based channel attention module into a multihead self-attention module. The overlapping attention block, a novel cross-attention method, uses overlapping windows to obtain abundant correlations with match information of a pair of images. Then, the blocks are flexibly stacked into a new powerful encoder. The decoder generation process of a high-resolution deformation displacement field from low-resolution features is considered as a superresolution process. Specifically, the superresolution module was employed to replace interpolation upsampling, which can overcome feature degradation. UTSRMorph was compared to state-of-the-art registration methods in the 3D brain MR (OASIS, IXI) and MR-CT datasets.
