CodecMOS-Accent: A MOS Benchmark of Resynthesized and TTS Speech from Neural Codecs Across English Accents

We present the CodecMOS-Accent dataset, a mean opinion score (MOS) benchmark designed to evaluate neural audio codec (NAC) models and the large language model (LLM)-based text-to-speech (TTS) models trained upon them, especially across non-standard speech like accented speech. The dataset comprises 4,000 codec resynthesis and TTS samples from 24 systems, featuring 32 speakers spanning ten accents. A large-scale subjective test was conducted to collect 19,600 annotations from 25 listeners across three dimensions: naturalness, speaker similarity, and accent similarity. This dataset does not only represent an up-to-date study of recent speech synthesis system performance but reveals insights including a tight relationship between speaker and accent similarity, the predictive power of objective metrics, and a perceptual bias when listeners share the same accent with the speaker. This dataset is expected to foster research on more human-centric evaluation for NAC and accented TTS.

F-Actor: Controllable Conversational Behaviour in Full-Duplex Models

Spoken conversational systems require more than accurate speech generation to have human-like conversations: to feel natural and engaging, they must produce conversational behaviour that adapts dynamically to the context. Current spoken conversational systems, however, rarely allow such customization, limiting their naturalness and usability. In this work, we present the first open, instruction-following full-duplex conversational speech model that can be trained efficiently under typical academic resource constraints. By keeping the audio encoder frozen and finetuning only the language model, our model requires just 2,000 hours of data, without relying on large-scale pretraining or multi-stage optimization. The model can follow explicit instructions to control speaker voice, conversation topic, conversational behaviour (e.g., backchanneling and interruptions), and dialogue initiation. We propose a single-stage training protocol and systematically analyze design choices. Both the model and training code will be released to enable reproducible research on controllable full-duplex speech systems.

Segmentation-Variant Codebooks for Preservation of Paralinguistic and Prosodic Information

Quantization in SSL speech models (e.g., HuBERT) improves compression and performance in tasks like language modeling, resynthesis, and text-to-speech but often discards prosodic and paralinguistic information (e.g., emotion, prominence). While increasing codebook size mitigates some loss, it inefficiently raises bitrates. We propose Segmentation-Variant Codebooks (SVCs), which quantize speech at distinct linguistic units (frame, phone, word, utterance), factorizing it into multiple streams of segment-specific discrete features. Our results show that SVCs are significantly more effective at preserving prosodic and paralinguistic information across probing tasks. Additionally, we find that pooling before rather than after discretization better retains segment-level information. Resynthesis experiments further confirm improved style realization and slightly improved quality while preserving intelligibility.
