Beyond Document Grounding: Span-Level Hallucination Detection over Code, Tool Output, and Documents

Hallucination detection for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is usually evaluated on natural-language document evidence. However, grounded generation systems increasingly rely on structured inputs: source code, developer-tool output, markdown documents, tables, and repository metadata. We introduce a unified benchmark for span-level hallucination detection over code, tool output, structured documents, and existing natural-language RAG datasets. The benchmark is built by starting from grounded correct answers, injecting localized hallucinations with exact character labels, and validating the code test split with evidence-based review. Our fine-tuned Qwen3.5-2B detector reaches 0.689 span-F1 on the unified test set and 0.60 on the code-agent source, where it substantially outperforms LettuceDetect-large (0.17) and the strongest zero-shot LLM judges we evaluated (at most 0.22). The same model remains competitive on established natural-language benchmarks, with 81.8 RAGTruth example-F1 and 0.724 English PsiloQA IoU.

RuleChef: Grounding LLM Task Knowledge in Human-Editable Rules

We present RuleChef, a framework that uses large language models (LLMs) to generate executable rules for NLP tasks such as text classification, Named Entity Recognition (NER), or relation extraction. Rules are generated based on a task description and a set of labeled examples, then they are iteratively improved based both on additional examples and on human feedback overexisting rules. RuleChef can also be used to bootstrap rules using the observed input-output pairs from any existing model for a given task. LLMs are used only at learning time, synthesizing rules and iteratively patching them based on failures measured on a held-out split. The result of this process is a fast, deterministic, and inspectable rule system. Preliminary evaluation is performed on both classification and NER tasks. We release RuleChef as open-source software under an Apache 2.0

ACL-Verbatim: hallucination-free question answering for research

Academic researchers need efficient and reliable methods for collecting high-quality information from trusted sources, but modern tools for AI-assisted research still suffer from the tendency of Large Language Models (LLMs) to produce factually inaccurate or nonsensical output, commonly referred to as hallucinations. We apply the extractive question answering system VerbatimRAG to research papers in the ACL Anthology, directly mapping user queries to verbatim text spans in retrieved documents. We contribute a novel ground truth dataset for the task of mapping user queries to relevant text spans in research papers, and use it to train and evaluate a variety of extractive models. Human annotation is performed by NLP researchers and is based on synthetic user queries generated using a custom pipeline based on the ScIRGen methodology, paired with chunks of research papers retrieved by VerbatimRAG. On this benchmark, a 150M-parameter ModernBERT token classifier trained on silver supervision from our pipeline achieves the best word-level F1 (53.6), ahead of the strongest evaluated LLM extractor (48.7).

Relation Extraction or Pattern Matching? Unravelling the Generalisation Limits of Language Models for Biographical RE

Analysing the generalisation capabilities of relation extraction (RE) models is crucial for assessing whether they learn robust relational patterns or rely on spurious correlations. Our cross-dataset experiments find that RE models struggle with unseen data, even within similar domains. Notably, higher intra-dataset performance does not indicate better transferability, instead often signaling overfitting to dataset-specific artefacts. Our results also show that data quality, rather than lexical similarity, is key to robust transfer, and the choice of optimal adaptation strategy depends on the quality of data available: while fine-tuning yields the best cross-dataset performance with high-quality data, few-shot in-context learning (ICL) is more effective with noisier data. However, even in these cases, zero-shot baselines occasionally outperform all cross-dataset results. Structural issues in RE benchmarks, such as single-relation per sample constraints and non-standardised negative class definitions, further hinder model transferability.

LettuceDetect: A Hallucination Detection Framework for RAG Applications

Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems remain vulnerable to hallucinated answers despite incorporating external knowledge sources. We present LettuceDetect a framework that addresses two critical limitations in existing hallucination detection methods: (1) the context window constraints of traditional encoder-based methods, and (2) the computational inefficiency of LLM based approaches. Building on ModernBERT's extended context capabilities (up to 8k tokens) and trained on the RAGTruth benchmark dataset, our approach outperforms all previous encoder-based models and most prompt-based models, while being approximately 30 times smaller than the best models. LettuceDetect is a token-classification model that processes context-question-answer triples, allowing for the identification of unsupported claims at the token level. Evaluations on the RAGTruth corpus demonstrate an F1 score of 79.22% for example-level detection, which is a 14.8% improvement over Luna, the previous state-of-the-art encoder-based architecture. Additionally, the system can process 30 to 60 examples per second on a single GPU, making it more practical for real-world RAG applications.

POTATO: exPlainable infOrmation exTrAcTion framewOrk

We present POTATO, a task- and languageindependent framework for human-in-the-loop (HITL) learning of rule-based text classifiers using graph-based features. POTATO handles any type of directed graph and supports parsing text into Abstract Meaning Representations (AMR), Universal Dependencies (UD), and 4lang semantic graphs. A streamlit-based user interface allows users to build rule systems from graph patterns, provides real-time evaluation based on ground truth data, and suggests rules by ranking graph features using interpretable machine learning models. Users can also provide patterns over graphs using regular expressions, and POTATO can recommend refinements of such rules. POTATO is applied in projects across domains and languages, including classification tasks on German legal text and English social media data. All components of our system are written in Python, can be installed via pip, and are released under an MIT License on GitHub.
