Depression Detection Based on Electroencephalography Using a Hybrid Deep Neural Network CNN-GRU and MRMR Feature Selection

This study investigates the detection and classification of depressive and non-depressive states using deep learning approaches. Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder that substantially affects quality of life, and early diagnosis can greatly enhance treatment effectiveness and patient care. However, conventional diagnostic methods rely heavily on self-reported assessments, which are often subjective and may lack reliability. Consequently, there is a strong need for objective and accurate techniques to identify depressive states. In this work, a deep learning based framework is proposed for the early detection of depression using EEG signals. EEG data, which capture underlying brain activity and are not influenced by external behavioral factors, can reveal subtle neural changes associated with depression. The proposed approach combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and gated recurrent units (GRUs) to jointly extract spatial and temporal features from EEG recordings. The minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR) algorithm is then applied to select the most informative features, followed by classification using a fully connected neural network. The results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves high performance in accurately identifying depressive states, with an overall accuracy of 98.74%. By effectively integrating temporal and spatial information and employing optimized feature selection, this method shows strong potential as a reliable tool for clinical applications. Overall, the proposed framework not only enables accurate early detection of depression but also has the potential to support improved treatment strategies and patient outcomes.

Early detection of diabetes through transfer learning-based eye (vision) screening and improvement of machine learning model performance and advanced parameter setting algorithms

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a serious and common complication of diabetes, caused by prolonged high blood sugar levels that damage the small retinal blood vessels. If left untreated, DR can progress to retinal vein occlusion and stimulate abnormal blood vessel growth, significantly increasing the risk of blindness. Traditional diabetes diagnosis methods often utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to extract visual features from retinal images, followed by classification algorithms such as decision trees and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) for disease detection. However, these approaches face several challenges, including low accuracy and sensitivity, lengthy machine learning (ML) model training due to high data complexity and volume, and the use of limited datasets for testing and evaluation. This study investigates the application of transfer learning (TL) to enhance ML model performance in DR detection. Key improvements include dimensionality reduction, optimized learning rate adjustments, and advanced parameter tuning algorithms, aimed at increasing efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. The proposed model achieved an overall accuracy of 84% on the testing dataset, outperforming prior studies. The highest class-specific accuracy reached 89%, with a maximum sensitivity of 97% and an F1-score of 92%, demonstrating strong performance in identifying DR cases. These findings suggest that TL-based DR screening is a promising approach for early diagnosis, enabling timely interventions to prevent vision loss and improve patient outcomes.

Comparison of EEG based epilepsy diagnosis using neural networks and wavelet transform

Epilepsy is one of the common neurological disorders characterized by recurrent and uncontrollable seizures, which seriously affect the life of patients. In many cases, electroencephalograms signal can provide important physiological information about the activity of the human brain which can be used to diagnose epilepsy. However, visual inspection of a large number of electroencephalogram signals is very time-consuming and can often lead to inconsistencies in physicians' diagnoses. Quantification of abnormalities in brain signals can indicate brain conditions and pathology so the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal plays a key role in the diagnosis of epilepsy. In this article, an attempt has been made to create a single instruction for diagnosing epilepsy, which consists of two steps. In the first step, a low-pass filter was used to preprocess the data and three separate mid-pass filters for different frequency bands and a multilayer neural network were designed. In the second step, the wavelet transform technique was used to process data. In particular, this paper proposes a multilayer perceptron neural network classifier for the diagnosis of epilepsy, that requires normal data and epilepsy data for education, but this classifier can recognize normal disorders, epilepsy, and even other disorders taught in educational examples. Also, the value of using electroencephalogram signal has been evaluated in two ways: using wavelet transform and non-using wavelet transform. Finally, the evaluation results indicate a relatively uniform impact factor on the use or non-use of wavelet transform on the improvement of epilepsy data functions, but in the end, it was shown that the use of perceptron multilayer neural network can provide a higher accuracy coefficient for experts.
