Percept-Aware Surgical Planning for Visual Cortical Prostheses with Vascular Avoidance

Cortical visual prostheses aim to restore sight by electrically stimulating neurons in early visual cortex (V1). With the emergence of high-density and flexible neural interfaces, electrode placement within three-dimensional cortex has become a critical surgical planning problem. Existing strategies emphasize visual field coverage and anatomical heuristics but do not directly optimize predicted perceptual outcomes under safety constraints. We present a percept-aware framework for surgical planning of cortical visual prostheses that formulates electrode placement as a constrained optimization problem in anatomical space. Electrode coordinates are treated as learnable parameters and optimized end-to-end using a differentiable forward model of prosthetic vision. The objective minimizes task-level perceptual error while incorporating vascular avoidance and gray matter feasibility constraints. Evaluated on simulated reading and natural image tasks using realistic folded cortical geometry (FreeSurfer fsaverage), percept-aware optimization consistently improves reconstruction fidelity relative to coverage-based placement strategies. Importantly, vascular safety constraints eliminate margin violations while preserving perceptual performance. The framework further enables co-optimization of multi-electrode thread configurations under fixed insertion budgets. These results demonstrate how differentiable percept models can inform anatomically grounded, safety-aware computer-assisted planning for cortical neural interfaces and provide a foundation for optimizing next-generation visual prostheses.

BIRD: Behavior Induction via Representation-structure Distillation

Human-aligned deep learning models exhibit behaviors consistent with human values, such as robustness, fairness, and honesty. Transferring these behavioral properties to models trained on different tasks or data distributions remains challenging: aligned behavior is easily forgotten during fine-tuning, and collecting task-specific data that preserves this behavior can be prohibitively costly. We introduce BIRD (Behavior Induction via Representation-structure Distillation), a flexible framework for transferring aligned behavior by matching the internal representation structure of a student model to that of a teacher. Applied to out-of-distribution robustness in image classification, BIRD outperforms fine-tuning, transfer learning, and continual learning methods, improving robust accuracy by up to 16% over the next strongest baseline. It remains effective even when the teacher is trained on a much simpler dataset and is $25 \times$ smaller than the student. In a large-scale study of over 400 teacher-student pairs, we show that three interpretable and computable properties of the teacher's representations (i.e., task relevance, behavioral relevance, and complementary knowledge) explain up to 85% of the variance in transfer success. These insights offer practical guidance for teacher selection and design. BIRD turns small, well-aligned models into scalable alignment seeds, removing a key bottleneck in deploying safe AI systems in the wild.

Explaining V1 Properties with a Biologically Constrained Deep Learning Architecture

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently emerged as promising models of the ventral visual stream, despite their lack of biological specificity. While current state-of-the-art models of the primary visual cortex (V1) have surfaced from training with adversarial examples and extensively augmented data, these models are still unable to explain key neural properties observed in V1 that arise from biological circuitry. To address this gap, we systematically incorporated neuroscience-derived architectural components into CNNs to identify a set of mechanisms and architectures that comprehensively explain neural activity in V1. We show drastic improvements in model-V1 alignment driven by the integration of architectural components that simulate center-surround antagonism, local receptive fields, tuned normalization, and cortical magnification. Upon enhancing task-driven CNNs with a collection of these specialized components, we uncover models with latent representations that yield state-of-the-art explanation of V1 neural activity and tuning properties. Our results highlight an important advancement in the field of NeuroAI, as we systematically establish a set of architectural components that contribute to unprecedented explanation of V1. The neuroscience insights that could be gleaned from increasingly accurate in-silico models of the brain have the potential to greatly advance the fields of both neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

A pilot study of the Earable device to measure facial muscle and eye movement tasks among healthy volunteers

Many neuromuscular disorders impair function of cranial nerve enervated muscles. Clinical assessment of cranial muscle function has several limitations. Clinician rating of symptoms suffers from inter-rater variation, qualitative or semi-quantitative scoring, and limited ability to capture infrequent or fluctuating symptoms. Patient-reported outcomes are limited by recall bias and poor precision. Current tools to measure orofacial and oculomotor function are cumbersome, difficult to implement, and non-portable. Here, we show how Earable, a wearable device, can discriminate certain cranial muscle activities such as chewing, talking, and swallowing. We demonstrate using data from a pilot study of 10 healthy participants how Earable can be used to measure features from EMG, EEG, and EOG waveforms from subjects performing mock Performance Outcome Assessments (mock-PerfOs), utilized widely in clinical research. Our analysis pipeline provides a framework for how to computationally process and statistically rank features from the Earable device. Finally, we demonstrate that Earable data may be used to classify these activities. Our results, conducted in a pilot study of healthy participants, enable a more comprehensive strategy for the design, development, and analysis of wearable sensor data for investigating clinical populations. Additionally, the results from this study support further evaluation of Earable or similar devices as tools to objectively measure cranial muscle activity in the context of a clinical research setting. Future work will be conducted in clinical disease populations, with a focus on detecting disease signatures, as well as monitoring intra-subject treatment responses. Readily available quantitative metrics from wearable sensor devices like Earable support strategies for the development of novel digital endpoints, a hallmark goal of clinical research.
