Nowadays, short videos (SVs) are essential to information acquisition and sharing in our life. The prevailing use of SVs to spread emotions leads to the necessity of emotion recognition in SVs. Considering the lack of SVs emotion data, we introduce a large-scale dataset named eMotions, comprising 27,996 videos. Meanwhile, we alleviate the impact of subjectivities on labeling quality by emphasizing better personnel allocations and multi-stage annotations. In addition, we provide the category-balanced and test-oriented variants through targeted data sampling. Some commonly used videos (e.g., facial expressions and postures) have been well studied. However, it is still challenging to understand the emotions in SVs. Since the enhanced content diversity brings more distinct semantic gaps and difficulties in learning emotion-related features, and there exists information gaps caused by the emotion incompleteness under the prevalently audio-visual co-expressions. To tackle these problems, we present an end-to-end baseline method AV-CPNet that employs the video transformer to better learn semantically relevant representations. We further design the two-stage cross-modal fusion module to complementarily model the correlations of audio-visual features. The EP-CE Loss, incorporating three emotion polarities, is then applied to guide model optimization. Extensive experimental results on nine datasets verify the effectiveness of AV-CPNet. Face analysis tasks have a wide range of applications, but the universal facial representation has only been explored in a few works. In this paper, we explore high-performance pre-training methods to boost the face analysis tasks such as face alignment and face parsing. We propose a self-supervised pre-training framework, called \textbf{\it Mask Contrastive Face (MCF)}, with mask image modeling and a contrastive strategy specially adjusted for face domain tasks. To improve the facial representation quality, we use feature map of a pre-trained visual backbone as a supervision item and use a partially pre-trained decoder for mask image modeling. To handle the face identity during the pre-training stage, we further use random masks to build contrastive learning pairs. We conduct the pre-training on the LAION-FACE-cropped dataset, a variants of LAION-FACE 20M, which contains more than 20 million face images from Internet websites. For efficiency pre-training, we explore our framework pre-training performance on a small part of LAION-FACE-cropped and verify the superiority with different pre-training settings. Our model pre-trained with the full pre-training dataset outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on multiple downstream tasks. Our model achieves 0.932 NME$_{diag}$ for AFLW-19 face alignment and 93.96 F1 score for LaPa face parsing. Code is available at https://github.com/nomewang/MCF.
Face video restoration (FVR) is a challenging but important problem where one seeks to recover a perceptually realistic face videos from a low-quality input. While diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have been shown to achieve remarkable performance for face image restoration, they often fail to preserve temporally coherent, high-quality videos, compromising the fidelity of reconstructed faces. We present a new conditional diffusion framework called FLAIR for FVR. FLAIR ensures temporal consistency across frames in a computationally efficient fashion by converting a traditional image DPM into a video DPM. The proposed conversion uses a recurrent video refinement layer and a temporal self-attention at different scales. FLAIR also uses a conditional iterative refinement process to balance the perceptual and distortion quality during inference. This process consists of two key components: a data-consistency module that analytically ensures that the generated video precisely matches its degraded observation and a coarse-to-fine image enhancement module specifically for facial regions. Our extensive experiments show superiority of FLAIR over the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) for video super-resolution, deblurring, JPEG restoration, and space-time frame interpolation on two high-quality face video datasets.
Human Facial Expressions plays an important role in identifying human actions or intention. Facial expressions can represent any specific action of any person and the pattern of violent behavior of any person strongly depends on the geographic region. Here we have designed an automated system by using a Convolutional Neural Network which can detect whether a person has any intention to commit any crime or not. Here we proposed a new method that can identify criminal intentions or violent behavior of any person before executing crimes more efficiently by using very little data on facial expressions before executing a crime or any violent tasks. Instead of using image features which is a time-consuming and faulty method we used an automated feature selector Convolutional Neural Network model which can capture exact facial expressions for training and then can predict that target facial expressions more accurately. Here we used only the facial data of a specific geographic region which can represent the violent and before-crime before-crime facial patterns of the people of the whole region.
An overview is given of the DAVID Smart-Toy platform, one of the first Edge AI platform designs to incorporate advanced low-power data processing by neural inference models co-located with the relevant image or audio sensors. There is also on-board capability for in-device text-to-speech generation. Two alternative embodiments are presented: a smart Teddy-bear, and a roving dog-like robot. The platform offers a speech-driven user interface and can observe and interpret user actions and facial expressions via its computer vision sensor node. A particular benefit of this design is that no personally identifiable information passes beyond the neural inference nodes thus providing inbuilt compliance with data protection regulations.
Recent advances in supervised deep learning techniques have demonstrated the possibility to remotely measure human physiological vital signs (e.g., photoplethysmograph, heart rate) just from facial videos. However, the performance of these methods heavily relies on the availability and diversity of real labeled data. Yet, collecting large-scale real-world data with high-quality labels is typically challenging and resource intensive, which also raises privacy concerns when storing personal bio-metric data. Synthetic video-based datasets (e.g., SCAMPS~\cite{mcduff2022scamps}) with photo-realistic synthesized avatars are introduced to alleviate the issues while providing high-quality synthetic data. However, there exists a significant gap between synthetic and real-world data, which hinders the generalization of neural models trained on these synthetic datasets. In this paper, we proposed several measures to add real-world noise to synthetic physiological signals and corresponding facial videos. We experimented with individual and combined augmentation methods and evaluated our framework on three public real-world datasets. Our results show that we were able to reduce the average MAE from 6.9 to 2.0.
Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) is a noninvasive technique that aims to capture subtle variations in facial pixels caused by changes in blood volume resulting from cardiac activities. Most existing unsupervised methods for rPPG tasks focus on the contrastive learning between samples while neglecting the inherent self-similar prior in physiological signals. In this paper, we propose a Self-Similarity Prior Distillation (SSPD) framework for unsupervised rPPG estimation, which capitalizes on the intrinsic self-similarity of cardiac activities. Specifically, we first introduce a physical-prior embedded augmentation technique to mitigate the effect of various types of noise. Then, we tailor a self-similarity-aware network to extract more reliable self-similar physiological features. Finally, we develop a hierarchical self-distillation paradigm to assist the network in disentangling self-similar physiological patterns from facial videos. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the unsupervised SSPD framework achieves comparable or even superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art supervised methods. Meanwhile, SSPD maintains the lowest inference time and computation cost among end-to-end models. The source codes are available at https://github.com/LinXi1C/SSPD.
This paper presents a novel visual-language model called DFER-CLIP, which is based on the CLIP model and designed for in-the-wild Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition (DFER). Specifically, the proposed DFER-CLIP consists of a visual part and a textual part. For the visual part, based on the CLIP image encoder, a temporal model consisting of several Transformer encoders is introduced for extracting temporal facial expression features, and the final feature embedding is obtained as a learnable "class" token. For the textual part, we use as inputs textual descriptions of the facial behaviour that is related to the classes (facial expressions) that we are interested in recognising -- those descriptions are generated using large language models, like ChatGPT. This, in contrast to works that use only the class names and more accurately captures the relationship between them. Alongside the textual description, we introduce a learnable token which helps the model learn relevant context information for each expression during training. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show that our DFER-CLIP also achieves state-of-the-art results compared with the current supervised DFER methods on the DFEW, FERV39k, and MAFW benchmarks. Creating realistic 3D facial animation is crucial for various applications in the movie production and gaming industry, especially with the burgeoning demand in the metaverse. However, prevalent methods such as blendshape-based approaches and facial rigging techniques are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and lack standardized configurations, making facial animation production challenging and costly. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised framework, Versatile Face Animator, which combines facial motion capture with motion retargeting in an end-to-end manner, eliminating the need for blendshapes or rigs. Our method has the following two main characteristics: 1) we propose an RGBD animation module to learn facial motion from raw RGBD videos by hierarchical motion dictionaries and animate RGBD images rendered from 3D facial mesh coarse-to-fine, enabling facial animation on arbitrary 3D characters regardless of their topology, textures, blendshapes, and rigs; and 2) we introduce a mesh retarget module to utilize RGBD animation to create 3D facial animation by manipulating facial mesh with controller transformations, which are estimated from dense optical flow fields and blended together with geodesic-distance-based weights. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework in generating impressive 3D facial animation results, highlighting its potential as a promising solution for the cost-effective and efficient production of facial animation in the metaverse.
Recent advances in 3D-aware GAN models have enabled the generation of realistic and controllable human body images. However, existing methods focus on the control of major body joints, neglecting the manipulation of expressive attributes, such as facial expressions, jaw poses, hand poses, and so on. In this work, we present XAGen, the first 3D generative model for human avatars capable of expressive control over body, face, and hands. To enhance the fidelity of small-scale regions like face and hands, we devise a multi-scale and multi-part 3D representation that models fine details. Based on this representation, we propose a multi-part rendering technique that disentangles the synthesis of body, face, and hands to ease model training and enhance geometric quality. Furthermore, we design multi-part discriminators that evaluate the quality of the generated avatars with respect to their appearance and fine-grained control capabilities. Experiments show that XAGen surpasses state-of-the-art methods in terms of realism, diversity, and expressive control abilities.
