An Unsupervised Semantic Sentence Ranking Scheme for Text Documents

This paper presents Semantic SentenceRank (SSR), an unsupervised scheme for automatically ranking sentences in a single document according to their relative importance. In particular, SSR extracts essential words and phrases from a text document, and uses semantic measures to construct, respectively, a semantic phrase graph over phrases and words, and a semantic sentence graph over sentences. It applies two variants of article-structure-biased PageRank to score phrases and words on the first graph and sentences on the second graph. It then combines these scores to generate the final score for each sentence. Finally, SSR solves a multi-objective optimization problem for ranking sentences based on their final scores and topic diversity through semantic subtopic clustering. An implementation of SSR that runs in quadratic time is presented, and it outperforms, on the SummBank benchmarks, each individual judge's ranking and compares favorably with the combined ranking of all judges.

A Gentle Introduction to Deep Learning for Graphs

The adaptive processing of graph data is a long-standing research topic which has been lately consolidated as a theme of major interest in the deep learning community. The snap increase in the amount and breadth of related research has come at the price of little systematization of knowledge and attention to earlier literature. This work is designed as a tutorial introduction to the field of deep learning for graphs. It favours a consistent and progressive introduction of the main concepts and architectural aspects over an exposition of the most recent literature, for which the reader is referred to available surveys. The paper takes a top-down view to the problem, introducing a generalized formulation of graph representation learning based on a local and iterative approach to structured information processing. It introduces the basic building blocks that can be combined to design novel and effective neural models for graphs. The methodological exposition is complemented by a discussion of interesting research challenges and applications in the field.

Impressive computational acceleration by using machine learning for 2-dimensional super-lubricant materials discovery

The screening of novel materials is an important topic in the field of materials science. Although traditional computational modeling, especially first-principles approaches, is a very useful and accurate tool to predict the properties of novel materials, it still demands extensive and expensive state-of-the-art computational resources. Additionally, they can be often extremely time consuming. We describe a time and resource-efficient machine learning approach to create a large dataset of structural properties of van der Waals layered structures. In particular, we focus on the interlayer energy and the elastic constant of layered materials composed of two different 2-dimensional (2D) structures, that are important for novel solid lubricant and super-lubricant materials. We show that machine learning models can recapitulate results of computationally expansive approaches (i.e. density functional theory) with high accuracy.

Quality Assessment of DIBR-synthesized views: An Overview

The Depth-Image-Based-Rendering (DIBR) is one of the main fundamental technique to generate new views in 3D video applications, such as Multi-View Videos (MVV), Free-Viewpoint Videos (FVV) and Virtual Reality (VR). However, the quality assessment of DIBR-synthesized views is quite different from the traditional 2D images/videos. In recent years, several efforts have been made towards this topic, but there lacks a detailed survey in literature. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on various current approaches for DIBR-synthesized views. The current accessible datasets of DIBR-synthesized views are firstly reviewed. Followed by a summary and analysis of the representative state-of-the-art objective metrics. Then, the performances of different objective metrics are evaluated and discussed on all available datasets. Finally, we discuss the potential challenges and suggest possible directions for future research.

How can AI Automate End-to-End Data Science?

Data science is labor-intensive and human experts are scarce but heavily involved in every aspect of it. This makes data science time consuming and restricted to experts with the resulting quality heavily dependent on their experience and skills. To make data science more accessible and scalable, we need its democratization. Automated Data Science (AutoDS) is aimed towards that goal and is emerging as an important research and business topic. We introduce and define the AutoDS challenge, followed by a proposal of a general AutoDS framework that covers existing approaches but also provides guidance for the development of new methods. We categorize and review the existing literature from multiple aspects of the problem setup and employed techniques. Then we provide several views on how AI could succeed in automating end-to-end AutoDS. We hope this survey can serve as insightful guideline for the AutoDS field and provide inspiration for future research.

Trajectorylet-Net: a novel framework for pose prediction based on trajectorylet descriptors

Pose prediction is an increasingly interesting topic in computer vision and robotics. In this paper, we propose a new network, Trajectorylet-Net, to predict future poses. Compared with most existing methods, our model focuses on modeling the co-occurrence long-term information and spatiotemporal correlation. Specifically, a novel descriptor, trajectorylet, is introduced to characterize the static and dynamic information of the input pose sequence. Then, a coupled spatio-temporal learning schema is proposed to generate trajectorylet descriptors, which can simultaneously capture the local structure of the human body and the global co-occurrence temporal information of the input sequence. Finally, we propose to predict future poses by gathering trajectorylet descriptors gradually. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on two benchmarks (e.g. G3D and FNTU), which demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Dialogue Transformers

We introduce a dialogue policy based on a transformer architecture, where the self-attention mechanism operates over the sequence of dialogue turns. Recent work has used hierarchical recurrent neural networks to encode multiple utterances in a dialogue context, but we argue that a pure self-attention mechanism is more suitable. By default, an RNN assumes that every item in a sequence is relevant for producing an encoding of the full sequence, but a single conversation can consist of multiple overlapping discourse segments as speakers interleave multiple topics. A transformer picks which turns to include in its encoding of the current dialogue state, and is naturally suited to selectively ignoring or attending to dialogue history. We compare the performance of the Transformer Embedding Dialogue (TED) policy to an LSTM and to the REDP, which was specifically designed to overcome this limitation of RNNs. We show that the TED policy's behaviour compares favourably, both in terms of accuracy and speed.

Unsupervised Paraphrasing by Simulated Annealing

Unsupervised paraphrase generation is a promising and important research topic in natural language processing. We propose UPSA, a novel approach that accomplishes Unsupervised Paraphrasing by Simulated Annealing. We model paraphrase generation as an optimization problem and propose a sophisticated objective function, involving semantic similarity, expression diversity, and language fluency of paraphrases. Then, UPSA searches the sentence space towards this objective by performing a sequence of local editing. Our method is unsupervised and does not require parallel corpora for training, so it could be easily applied to different domains. We evaluate our approach on a variety of benchmark datasets, namely, Quora, Wikianswers, MSCOCO, and Twitter. Extensive results show that UPSA achieves the state-of-the-art performance compared with previous unsupervised methods in terms of both automatic and human evaluations. Further, our approach outperforms most existing domain-adapted supervised models, showing the generalizability of UPSA.

From Observability to Significance in Distributed Information Systems

To understand and explain process behaviour we need to be able to see it, and decide its significance, i.e. be able to tell a story about its behaviours. This paper describes a few of the modelling challenges that underlie monitoring and observation of processes in IT, by human or by software. The topic of the observability of systems has been elevated recently in connection with computer monitoring and tracing of processes for debugging and forensics. It raises the issue of well-known principles of measurement, in bounded contexts, but these issues have been left implicit in the Computer Science literature. This paper aims to remedy this omission, by laying out a simple promise theoretic model, summarizing a long standing trail of work on the observation of distributed systems, based on elementary distinguishability of observations, and classical causality, with history. Three distinct views of a system are sought, across a number of scales, that described how information is transmitted (and lost) as it moves around the system, aggregated into journals and logs.
