Assessing the Efficacy of Clinical Sentiment Analysis and Topic Extraction in Psychiatric Readmission Risk Prediction

Predicting which patients are more likely to be readmitted to a hospital within 30 days after discharge is a valuable piece of information in clinical decision-making. Building a successful readmission risk classifier based on the content of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has proved, however, to be a challenging task. Previously explored features include mainly structured information, such as sociodemographic data, comorbidity codes and physiological variables. In this paper we assess incorporating additional clinically interpretable NLP-based features such as topic extraction and clinical sentiment analysis to predict early readmission risk in psychiatry patients.

Investigation of Topic Modelling Methods for Understanding the Reports of the Mining Projects in Queensland

In the mining industry, many reports are generated in the project management process. These past documents are a great resource of knowledge for future success. However, it would be a tedious and challenging task to retrieve the necessary information if the documents are unorganized and unstructured. Document clustering is a powerful approach to cope with the problem, and many methods have been introduced in past studies. Nonetheless, there is no silver bullet that can perform the best for any types of documents. Thus, exploratory studies are required to apply the clustering methods for new datasets. In this study, we will investigate multiple topic modelling (TM) methods. The objectives are finding the appropriate approach for the mining project reports using the dataset of the Geological Survey of Queensland, Department of Resources, Queensland Government, and understanding the contents to get the idea of how to organise them. Three TM methods, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), and Nonnegative Tensor Factorization (NTF) are compared statistically and qualitatively. After the evaluation, we conclude that the LDA performs the best for the dataset; however, the possibility remains that the other methods could be adopted with some improvements.

Guiding Topic Flows in the Generative Chatbot by Enhancing the ConceptNet with the Conversation Corpora

Human conversations consist of reasonable and natural topic flows, which are observed as the shifts of the mentioned concepts across utterances. Previous chatbots that incorporate the external commonsense knowledge graph prove that modeling the concept shifts can effectively alleviate the dull and uninformative response dilemma. However, there still exists a gap between the concept relations in the natural conversation and those in the external commonsense knowledge graph, which is an issue to solve. Specifically, the concept relations in the external commonsense knowledge graph are not intuitively built from the conversational scenario but the world knowledge, which makes them insufficient for the chatbot construction. To bridge the above gap, we propose the method to supply more concept relations extracted from the conversational corpora and reconstruct an enhanced concept graph for the chatbot construction. In addition, we present a novel, powerful, and fast graph encoding architecture named the Edge-Transformer to replace the traditional GNN architecture. Experimental results on the Reddit conversation dataset indicate our proposed method significantly outperforms strong baseline systems and achieves new SOTA results. Further analysis individually proves the effectiveness of the enhanced concept graph and the Edge-Transformer architecture.

FinChat: Corpus and evaluation setup for Finnish chat conversations on everyday topics

Creating open-domain chatbots requires large amounts of conversational data and related benchmark tasks to evaluate them. Standardized evaluation tasks are crucial for creating automatic evaluation metrics for model development; otherwise, comparing the models would require resource-expensive human evaluation. While chatbot challenges have recently managed to provide a plethora of such resources for English, resources in other languages are not yet available. In this work, we provide a starting point for Finnish open-domain chatbot research. We describe our collection efforts to create the Finnish chat conversation corpus FinChat, which is made available publicly. FinChat includes unscripted conversations on seven topics from people of different ages. Using this corpus, we also construct a retrieval-based evaluation task for Finnish chatbot development. We observe that off-the-shelf chatbot models trained on conversational corpora do not perform better than chance at choosing the right answer based on automatic metrics, while humans can do the same task almost perfectly. Similarly, in a human evaluation, responses to questions from the evaluation set generated by the chatbots are predominantly marked as incoherent. Thus, FinChat provides a challenging evaluation set, meant to encourage chatbot development in Finnish.

Evaluating the effect of topic consideration in identifying communities of rating-based social networks

Finding meaningful communities in social network has attracted the attentions of many researchers. The community structure of complex networks reveals both their organization and hidden relations among their constituents. Most of the researches in the field of community detection mainly focus on the topological structure of the network without performing any content analysis. Nowadays, real world social networks are containing a vast range of information including shared objects, comments, following information, etc. In recent years, a number of researches have proposed approaches which consider both the contents that are interchanged in the networks and the topological structures of the networks in order to find more meaningful communities. In this research, the effect of topic analysis in finding more meaningful communities in social networking sites in which the users express their feelings toward different objects (like movies) by the means of rating is demonstrated by performing extensive experiments.

Stay on Topic, Please: Aligning User Comments to the Content of a News Article

Social scientists have shown that up to 50% if the content posted to a news article have no relation to its journalistic content. In this study we propose a classification algorithm to categorize user comments posted to a new article base don their alignment to its content. The alignment seek to match user comments to an article based on similarity off content, entities in discussion, and topic. We proposed a BERTAC, BAERT-based approach that learn jointly article-comment embeddings and infers the relevance class of comments. We introduce an ordinal classification loss that penalizes the difference between the predicted and true label. We conduct a thorough study to show influence of the proposed loss on the learning process. The results on five representative news outlets show that our approach can learn the comment class with up to 36% average accuracy improvement compering to the baselines, and up to 25% compering to the BA-BC model. BA-BC is out approach that consists of two models aimed to capture dis-jointly the formal language of news articles and the informal language of comments. We also conduct a user study to evaluate human labeling performance to understand the difficulty of the classification task. The user agreement on comment-article alignment is "moderate" per Krippendorff's alpha score, which suggests that the classification task is difficult.

Don't Give Me the Details, Just the Summary! Topic-Aware Convolutional Neural Networks for Extreme Summarization

We introduce extreme summarization, a new single-document summarization task which does not favor extractive strategies and calls for an abstractive modeling approach. The idea is to create a short, one-sentence news summary answering the question "What is the article about?". We collect a real-world, large-scale dataset for this task by harvesting online articles from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). We propose a novel abstractive model which is conditioned on the article's topics and based entirely on convolutional neural networks. We demonstrate experimentally that this architecture captures long-range dependencies in a document and recognizes pertinent content, outperforming an oracle extractive system and state-of-the-art abstractive approaches when evaluated automatically and by humans.

Coarse-grained Cross-lingual Alignment of Comparable Texts with Topic Models and Encyclopedic Knowledge

We present a method for coarse-grained cross-lingual alignment of comparable texts: segments consisting of contiguous paragraphs that discuss the same theme (e.g. history, economy) are aligned based on induced multilingual topics. The method combines three ideas: a two-level LDA model that filters out words that do not convey themes, an HMM that models the ordering of themes in the collection of documents, and language-independent concept annotations to serve as a cross-language bridge and to strengthen the connection between paragraphs in the same segment through concept relations. The method is evaluated on English and French data previously used for monolingual alignment. The results show state-of-the-art performance in both monolingual and cross-lingual settings.

Learning Multilingual Embeddings for Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval in the Presence of Topically Aligned Corpora

Cross-lingual information retrieval is a challenging task in the absence of aligned parallel corpora. In this paper, we address this problem by considering topically aligned corpora designed for evaluating an IR setup. To emphasize, we neither use any sentence-aligned corpora or document-aligned corpora, nor do we use any language specific resources such as dictionary, thesaurus, or grammar rules. Instead, we use an embedding into a common space and learn word correspondences directly from there. We test our proposed approach for bilingual IR on standard FIRE datasets for Bangla, Hindi and English. The proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art method not only for IR evaluation measures but also in terms of time requirements. We extend our method successfully to the trilingual setting.

Self-supervised learning of visual features through embedding images into text topic spaces

End-to-end training from scratch of current deep architectures for new computer vision problems would require Imagenet-scale datasets, and this is not always possible. In this paper we present a method that is able to take advantage of freely available multi-modal content to train computer vision algorithms without human supervision. We put forward the idea of performing self-supervised learning of visual features by mining a large scale corpus of multi-modal (text and image) documents. We show that discriminative visual features can be learnt efficiently by training a CNN to predict the semantic context in which a particular image is more probable to appear as an illustration. For this we leverage the hidden semantic structures discovered in the text corpus with a well-known topic modeling technique. Our experiments demonstrate state of the art performance in image classification, object detection, and multi-modal retrieval compared to recent self-supervised or natural-supervised approaches.
