Emerging intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) significantly improve system performance, but also pose a signifcant risk for physical layer security (PLS). Unlike the extensive research on legitimate IRS-enhanced communications, in this article we present an adversarial IRS-based fully-passive jammer (FPJ). We describe typical application scenarios for Disco IRS (DIRS)-based FPJ, where an illegitimate IRS with random, time-varying reflection properties acts like a "disco ball" to randomly change the propagation environment. We introduce the principles of DIRS-based FPJ and overview existing investigations of the technology, including a design example employing one-bit phase shifters. The DIRS-based FPJ can be implemented without either jamming power or channel state information (CSI) for the legitimate users (LUs). It does not suffer from the energy constraints of traditional active jammers, nor does it require any knowledge of the LU channels. In addition to the proposed jamming attack, we also propose an anti-jamming strategy that requires only statistical rather than instantaneous CSI. Furthermore, we present a data frame structure that enables the legitimate access point (AP) to estimate the statistical CSI in the presence of the DIRS jamming. Typical cases are discussed to show the impact of the DIRS-based FPJ and the feasibility of the anti-jamming precoder. Moreover, we outline future research directions and challenges for the DIRS-based FPJ and its anti-jamming precoding to stimulate this line of research and pave the way for practical applications.
Combinatorial inverse problems in high energy physics span enormous algorithmic challenges. This work presents a new deep learning driven clustering algorithm that utilizes a space-time non-local trainable graph constructor, a graph neural network, and a set transformer. The model is trained with loss functions at the graph node, edge and object level, including contrastive learning and meta-supervision. The algorithm can be applied to problems such as charged particle tracking, calorimetry, pile-up discrimination, jet physics, and beyond. We showcase the effectiveness of this cutting-edge AI approach through particle tracking simulations. The code is available online.
Decision trees are widely used in machine learning due to their simplicity in construction and interpretability. However, as data sizes grow, traditional methods for constructing and retraining decision trees become increasingly slow, scaling polynomially with the number of training examples. In this work, we introduce a novel quantum algorithm, named Des-q, for constructing and retraining decision trees in regression and binary classification tasks. Assuming the data stream produces small increments of new training examples, we demonstrate that our Des-q algorithm significantly reduces the time required for tree retraining, achieving a poly-logarithmic time complexity in the number of training examples, even accounting for the time needed to load the new examples into quantum-accessible memory. Our approach involves building a decision tree algorithm to perform k-piecewise linear tree splits at each internal node. These splits simultaneously generate multiple hyperplanes, dividing the feature space into k distinct regions. To determine the k suitable anchor points for these splits, we develop an efficient quantum-supervised clustering method, building upon the q-means algorithm of Kerenidis et al. Des-q first efficiently estimates each feature weight using a novel quantum technique to estimate the Pearson correlation. Subsequently, we employ weighted distance estimation to cluster the training examples in k disjoint regions and then proceed to expand the tree using the same procedure. We benchmark the performance of the simulated version of our algorithm against the state-of-the-art classical decision tree for regression and binary classification on multiple data sets with numerical features. Further, we showcase that the proposed algorithm exhibits similar performance to the state-of-the-art decision tree while significantly speeding up the periodic tree retraining.
We study batched bandit experiments and consider the problem of inference conditional on the realized stopping time, assignment probabilities, and target parameter, where all of these may be chosen adaptively using information up to the last batch of the experiment. Absent further restrictions on the experiment, we show that inference using only the results of the last batch is optimal. When the adaptive aspects of the experiment are known to be location-invariant, in the sense that they are unchanged when we shift all batch-arm means by a constant, we show that there is additional information in the data, captured by one additional linear function of the batch-arm means. In the more restrictive case where the stopping time, assignment probabilities, and target parameter are known to depend on the data only through a collection of polyhedral events, we derive computationally tractable and optimal conditional inference procedures.
Trustworthy federated learning aims to achieve optimal performance while ensuring clients' privacy. Existing privacy-preserving federated learning approaches are mostly tailored for image data, lacking applications for time series data, which have many important applications, like machine health monitoring, human activity recognition, etc. Furthermore, protective noising on a time series data analytics model can significantly interfere with temporal-dependent learning, leading to a greater decline in accuracy. To address these issues, we develop a privacy-preserving federated learning algorithm for time series data. Specifically, we employ local differential privacy to extend the privacy protection trust boundary to the clients. We also incorporate shuffle techniques to achieve a privacy amplification, mitigating the accuracy decline caused by leveraging local differential privacy. Extensive experiments were conducted on five time series datasets. The evaluation results reveal that our algorithm experienced minimal accuracy loss compared to non-private federated learning in both small and large client scenarios. Under the same level of privacy protection, our algorithm demonstrated improved accuracy compared to the centralized differentially private federated learning in both scenarios.
Class-agnostic object counting aims to count object instances of an arbitrary class at test time. It is challenging but also enables many potential applications. Current methods require human-annotated exemplars as inputs which are often unavailable for novel categories, especially for autonomous systems. Thus, we propose zero-shot object counting (ZSC), a new setting where only the class name is available during test time. This obviates the need for human annotators and enables automated operation. To perform ZSC, we propose finding a few object crops from the input image and use them as counting exemplars. The goal is to identify patches containing the objects of interest while also being visually representative for all instances in the image. To do this, we first construct class prototypes using large language-vision models, including CLIP and Stable Diffusion, to select the patches containing the target objects. Furthermore, we propose a ranking model that estimates the counting error of each patch to select the most suitable exemplars for counting. Experimental results on a recent class-agnostic counting dataset, FSC-147, validate the effectiveness of our method.
While the design of blind image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms has improved significantly, the distribution shift between the training and testing scenarios often leads to a poor performance of these methods at inference time. This motivates the study of test time adaptation (TTA) techniques to improve their performance at inference time. Existing auxiliary tasks and loss functions used for TTA may not be relevant for quality-aware adaptation of the pre-trained model. In this work, we introduce two novel quality-relevant auxiliary tasks at the batch and sample levels to enable TTA for blind IQA. In particular, we introduce a group contrastive loss at the batch level and a relative rank loss at the sample level to make the model quality aware and adapt to the target data. Our experiments reveal that even using a small batch of images from the test distribution helps achieve significant improvement in performance by updating the batch normalization statistics of the source model.
Utilizing optical fibers to detect and pinpoint vibrations, Distributed Optical Fiber Vibration Sensing (DVS) technology provides real-time monitoring and surveillance of wide-reaching areas. This field has been leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Recently, a study has accomplished end-to-end vibration event recognition, enabling utilization of CNN-based DVS algorithms as real-time embedded system for edge computing in practical application situations. Considering the power consumption of central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU), and the inflexibility of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), field-Programmable gate array (FPGA) is the optimal computing platform for the system. This paper proposes to compress pre-trained network and adopt a novel hardware structure, to design a fully on-chip, pipelined inference accelerator for CNN-based DVS algorithm, without fine tuning or re-training. This design allows for real-time processing with low power consumption and system requirement.An examination has been executed on an existing DVS algorithm based on a 40-layer CNN model comprising 2.7 million parameters. It is completely implemented on-chip, pipelined, with no reduction in accuracy.
The goal of image composition is merging a foreground object into a background image to obtain a realistic composite image. Recently, generative composition methods are built on large pretrained diffusion models, due to their unprecedented image generation ability. They train a model on abundant pairs of foregrounds and backgrounds, so that it can be directly applied to a new pair of foreground and background at test time. However, the generated results often lose the foreground details and exhibit noticeable artifacts. In this work, we propose an embarrassingly simple approach named DreamCom inspired by DreamBooth. Specifically, given a few reference images for a subject, we finetune text-guided inpainting diffusion model to associate this subject with a special token and inpaint this subject in the specified bounding box. We also construct a new dataset named MureCom well-tailored for this task.
Mobile robots often rely on pre-existing maps for effective path planning and navigation. However, when these maps are unavailable, particularly in unfamiliar environments, a different approach become essential. This paper introduces DynaCon, a novel system designed to provide mobile robots with contextual awareness and dynamic adaptability during navigation, eliminating the reliance of traditional maps. DynaCon integrates real-time feedback with an object server, prompt engineering, and navigation modules. By harnessing the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), DynaCon not only understands patterns within given numeric series but also excels at categorizing objects into matched spaces. This facilitates dynamic path planner imbued with contextual awareness. We validated the effectiveness of DynaCon through an experiment where a robot successfully navigated to its goal using reasoning.
