This report outlines our team's participation in VCL Challenges B Continual Test_time Adaptation, focusing on the technical details of our approach. Our primary focus is Testtime Adaptation using bi_level adaptations, encompassing image_level and detector_level adaptations. At the image level, we employ adjustable parameterbased image filters, while at the detector level, we leverage adjustable parameterbased mean teacher modules. Ultimately, through the utilization of these bi_level adaptations, we have achieved a remarkable 38.3% mAP on the target domain of the test set within VCL Challenges B. It is worth noting that the minimal drop in mAP, is mearly 4.2%, and the overall performance is 32.5% mAP.
The digitization of manufacturing processes enables promising applications for machine learning-assisted quality assurance. A widely used manufacturing process that can strongly benefit from data-driven solutions is \ac{GMAW}. The welding process is characterized by complex cause-effect relationships between material properties, process conditions and weld quality. In non-laboratory environments with frequently changing process parameters, accurate determination of weld quality by destructive testing is economically unfeasible. Deep learning offers the potential to identify the relationships in available process data and predict the weld quality from process observations. In this paper, we present a concept for a deep learning based predictive quality system in \ac{GMAW}. At its core, the concept involves a pipeline consisting of four major phases: collection and management of multi-sensor data (e.g. current and voltage), real-time processing and feature engineering of the time series data by means of autoencoders, training and deployment of suitable recurrent deep learning models for quality predictions, and model evolutions under changing process conditions using continual learning. The concept provides the foundation for future research activities in which we will realize an online predictive quality system for running production.
Recalling the most relevant visual memories for localisation or understanding a priori the likely outcome of localisation effort against a particular visual memory is useful for efficient and robust visual navigation. Solutions to this problem should be divorced from performance appraisal against ground truth - as this is not available at run-time - and should ideally be based on generalisable environmental observations. For this, we propose applying the recently developed Visual DNA as a highly scalable tool for comparing datasets of images - in this work, sequences of map and live experiences. In the case of localisation, important dataset differences impacting performance are modes of appearance change, including weather, lighting, and season. Specifically, for any deep architecture which is used for place recognition by matching feature volumes at a particular layer, we use distribution measures to compare neuron-wise activation statistics between live images and multiple previously recorded past experiences, with a potentially large seasonal (winter/summer) or time of day (day/night) shift. We find that differences in these statistics correlate to performance when localising using a past experience with the same appearance gap. We validate our approach over the Nordland cross-season dataset as well as data from Oxford's University Parks with lighting and mild seasonal change, showing excellent ability of our system to rank actual localisation performance across candidate experiences.
In the realm of brittle fracture animation, generating realistic destruction animations with physics simulation techniques can be computationally expensive. Although methods using Voronoi diagrams or pre-fractured patterns work for real-time applications, they often lack realism in portraying brittle fractures. This paper introduces a novel learning-based approach for seamlessly merging realistic brittle fracture animations with rigid-body simulations. Our method utilizes BEM brittle fracture simulations to create fractured patterns and collision conditions for a given shape, which serve as training data for the learning process. To effectively integrate collision conditions and fractured shapes into a deep learning framework, we introduce the concept of latent impulse representation and geometrically-segmented signed distance function (GS-SDF). The latent impulse representation serves as input, capturing information about impact forces on the shape's surface. Simultaneously, a GS-SDF is used as the output representation of the fractured shape. To address the challenge of optimizing multiple fractured pattern targets with a single latent code, we propose an eight-dimensional latent space based on a normal distribution code within our latent impulse representation design. This adaptation effectively transforms our neural network into a generative one. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach can generate significantly more detailed brittle fractures compared to existing techniques, all while maintaining commendable computational efficiency during run-time.
We encounter time series data in many domains such as finance, physics, business, and weather. One of the main tasks of time series analysis, one that helps to take informed decisions under uncertainty, is forecasting. Time series are often hierarchically structured, e.g., a company sales might be broken down into different regions, and each region into different stores. In some cases the number of series in the hierarchy is too big to fit in a single model to produce forecasts in relevant time, and a decentralized approach is beneficial. One way to do this is to train independent forecasting models for each series and for some summary statistics series implied by the hierarchy (e.g. the sum of all series) and to pass those models to a reconciliation algorithm to improve those forecasts by sharing information between the series. In this work we focus on the reconciliation step, and propose a method to do so from a Bayesian perspective - Bayesian forecast reconciliation. We also define the common case of linear Gaussian reconciliation, where the forecasts are Gaussian and the hierarchy has linear structure, and show that we can compute reconciliation in closed form. We evaluate these methods on synthetic and real data sets, and compare them to other work in this field.
Microring resonators (MRRs) are promising devices for time-delay photonic reservoir computing, but the impact of the different physical effects taking place in the MRRs on the reservoir computing performance is yet to be fully understood. We numerically analyze the impact of linear losses as well as thermo-optic and free-carrier effects relaxation times on the prediction error of the time-series task NARMA-10. We demonstrate the existence of three regions, defined by the input power and the frequency detuning between the optical source and the microring resonance, that reveal the cavity transition from linear to nonlinear regimes. One of these regions offers very low error in time-series prediction under relatively low input power and number of nodes while the other regions either lack nonlinearity or become unstable. This study provides insight into the design of the MRR and the optimization of its physical properties for improving the prediction performance of time-delay reservoir computing.
Tracking of plant cells in images obtained by microscope is a challenging problem due to biological phenomena such as large number of cells, non-uniform growth of different layers of the tightly packed plant cells and cell division. Moreover, images in deeper layers of the tissue being noisy and unavoidable systemic errors inherent in the imaging process further complicates the problem. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based method that exploits the tightly packed three-dimensional cell structure of plant cells to create a three-dimensional graph in order to perform accurate cell tracking. We further propose novel algorithms for cell division detection and effective three-dimensional registration, which improve upon the state-of-the-art algorithms. We demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm in terms of tracking accuracy and inference-time on a benchmark dataset.
In this work, we introduce Wonder3D, a novel method for efficiently generating high-fidelity textured meshes from single-view images.Recent methods based on Score Distillation Sampling (SDS) have shown the potential to recover 3D geometry from 2D diffusion priors, but they typically suffer from time-consuming per-shape optimization and inconsistent geometry. In contrast, certain works directly produce 3D information via fast network inferences, but their results are often of low quality and lack geometric details. To holistically improve the quality, consistency, and efficiency of image-to-3D tasks, we propose a cross-domain diffusion model that generates multi-view normal maps and the corresponding color images. To ensure consistency, we employ a multi-view cross-domain attention mechanism that facilitates information exchange across views and modalities. Lastly, we introduce a geometry-aware normal fusion algorithm that extracts high-quality surfaces from the multi-view 2D representations. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate that our method achieves high-quality reconstruction results, robust generalization, and reasonably good efficiency compared to prior works.
This paper proposes a new method for differentiating through optimal trajectories arising from non-convex, constrained discrete-time optimal control (COC) problems using the implicit function theorem (IFT). Previous works solve a differential Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system for the trajectory derivative, and achieve this efficiently by solving an auxiliary Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) problem. In contrast, we directly evaluate the matrix equations which arise from applying variable elimination on the Lagrange multiplier terms in the (differential) KKT system. By appropriately accounting for the structure of the terms within the resulting equations, we show that the trajectory derivatives scale linearly with the number of timesteps. Furthermore, our approach allows for easy parallelization, significantly improved scalability with model size, direct computation of vector-Jacobian products and improved numerical stability compared to prior works. As an additional contribution, we unify prior works, addressing claims that computing trajectory derivatives using IFT scales quadratically with the number of timesteps. We evaluate our method on a both synthetic benchmark and four challenging, learning from demonstration benchmarks including a 6-DoF maneuvering quadrotor and 6-DoF rocket powered landing.
Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) is a popular technique for training high-quality AI assistants. However, RLHF may also encourage model responses that match user beliefs over truthful responses, a behavior known as sycophancy. We investigate the prevalence of sycophancy in RLHF-trained models and whether human preference judgements are responsible. We first demonstrate that five state-of-the-art AI assistants consistently exhibit sycophantic behavior across four varied free-form text-generation tasks. To understand if human preferences drive this broadly observed behavior of RLHF models, we analyze existing human preference data. We find that when a response matches a user's views, it is more likely to be preferred. Moreover, both humans and preference models (PMs) prefer convincingly-written sycophantic responses over correct ones a non-negligible fraction of the time. Optimizing model outputs against PMs also sometimes sacrifices truthfulness in favor of sycophancy. Overall, our results indicate that sycophancy is a general behavior of RLHF models, likely driven in part by human preference judgements favoring sycophantic responses.
