In this paper, we describe a novel architecture which can generate hilarious captions for a given input image. The architecture is split into two halves, i.e. image captioning and hilarious text conversion. The architecture starts with a pre-trained CNN model, VGG16 in this implementation, and applies attention LSTM on it to generate normal caption. These normal captions then are fed forward to our hilarious text conversion transformer which converts this text into something hilarious while maintaining the context of the input image. The architecture can also be split into two halves and only the seq2seq transformer can be used to generate hilarious caption by inputting a sentence.This paper aims to help everyday user to be more lazy and hilarious at the same time by generating captions using CATNet.

Additive Higher-Order Factorization Machines

In the age of big data and interpretable machine learning, approaches need to work at scale and at the same time allow for a clear mathematical understanding of the method's inner workings. While there exist inherently interpretable semi-parametric regression techniques for large-scale applications to account for non-linearity in the data, their model complexity is still often restricted. One of the main limitations are missing interactions in these models, which are not included for the sake of better interpretability, but also due to untenable computational costs. To address this shortcoming, we derive a scalable high-order tensor product spline model using a factorization approach. Our method allows to include all (higher-order) interactions of non-linear feature effects while having computational costs proportional to a model without interactions. We prove both theoretically and empirically that our methods scales notably better than existing approaches, derive meaningful penalization schemes and also discuss further theoretical aspects. We finally investigate predictive and estimation performance both with synthetic and real data.

PoseFusion2: Simultaneous Background Reconstruction and Human Shape Recovery in Real-time

Dynamic environments that include unstructured moving objects pose a hard problem for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) performance. The motion of rigid objects can be typically tracked by exploiting their texture and geometric features. However, humans moving in the scene are often one of the most important, interactive targets - they are very hard to track and reconstruct robustly due to non-rigid shapes. In this work, we present a fast, learning-based human object detector to isolate the dynamic human objects and realise a real-time dense background reconstruction framework. We go further by estimating and reconstructing the human pose and shape. The final output environment maps not only provide the dense static backgrounds but also contain the dynamic human meshes and their trajectories. Our Dynamic SLAM system runs at around 26 frames per second (fps) on GPUs, while additionally turning on accurate human pose estimation can be executed at up to 10 fps.

Learning Polynomial Transformations

We consider the problem of learning high dimensional polynomial transformations of Gaussians. Given samples of the form $p(x)$, where $x\sim N(0, \mathrm{Id}_r)$ is hidden and $p: \mathbb{R}^r \to \mathbb{R}^d$ is a function where every output coordinate is a low-degree polynomial, the goal is to learn the distribution over $p(x)$. This problem is natural in its own right, but is also an important special case of learning deep generative models, namely pushforwards of Gaussians under two-layer neural networks with polynomial activations. Understanding the learnability of such generative models is crucial to understanding why they perform so well in practice. Our first main result is a polynomial-time algorithm for learning quadratic transformations of Gaussians in a smoothed setting. Our second main result is a polynomial-time algorithm for learning constant-degree polynomial transformations of Gaussian in a smoothed setting, when the rank of the associated tensors is small. In fact our results extend to any rotation-invariant input distribution, not just Gaussian. These are the first end-to-end guarantees for learning a pushforward under a neural network with more than one layer. Along the way, we also give the first polynomial-time algorithms with provable guarantees for tensor ring decomposition, a popular generalization of tensor decomposition that is used in practice to implicitly store large tensors.

The Importance of Future Information in Credit Card Fraud Detection

Fraud detection systems (FDS) mainly perform two tasks: (i) real-time detection while the payment is being processed and (ii) posterior detection to block the card retrospectively and avoid further frauds. Since human verification is often necessary and the payment processing time is limited, the second task manages the largest volume of transactions. In the literature, fraud detection challenges and algorithms performance are widely studied but the very formulation of the problem is never disrupted: it aims at predicting if a transaction is fraudulent based on its characteristics and the past transactions of the cardholder. Yet, in posterior detection, verification often takes days, so new payments on the card become available before a decision is taken. This is our motivation to propose a new paradigm: posterior fraud detection with "future" information. We start by providing evidence of the on-time availability of subsequent transactions, usable as extra context to improve detection. We then design a Bidirectional LSTM to make use of these transactions. On a real-world dataset with over 30 million transactions, it achieves higher performance than a regular LSTM, which is the state-of-the-art classifier for fraud detection that only uses the past context. We also introduce new metrics to show that the proposal catches more frauds, more compromised cards, and based on their earliest frauds. We believe that future works on this new paradigm will have a significant impact on the detection of compromised cards.

Learning and Inference in Sparse Coding Models with Langevin Dynamics

We describe a stochastic, dynamical system capable of inference and learning in a probabilistic latent variable model. The most challenging problem in such models - sampling the posterior distribution over latent variables - is proposed to be solved by harnessing natural sources of stochasticity inherent in electronic and neural systems. We demonstrate this idea for a sparse coding model by deriving a continuous-time equation for inferring its latent variables via Langevin dynamics. The model parameters are learned by simultaneously evolving according to another continuous-time equation, thus bypassing the need for digital accumulators or a global clock. Moreover we show that Langevin dynamics lead to an efficient procedure for sampling from the posterior distribution in the 'L0 sparse' regime, where latent variables are encouraged to be set to zero as opposed to having a small L1 norm. This allows the model to properly incorporate the notion of sparsity rather than having to resort to a relaxed version of sparsity to make optimization tractable. Simulations of the proposed dynamical system on both synthetic and natural image datasets demonstrate that the model is capable of probabilistically correct inference, enabling learning of the dictionary as well as parameters of the prior.

OnePose: One-Shot Object Pose Estimation without CAD Models

We propose a new method named OnePose for object pose estimation. Unlike existing instance-level or category-level methods, OnePose does not rely on CAD models and can handle objects in arbitrary categories without instance- or category-specific network training. OnePose draws the idea from visual localization and only requires a simple RGB video scan of the object to build a sparse SfM model of the object. Then, this model is registered to new query images with a generic feature matching network. To mitigate the slow runtime of existing visual localization methods, we propose a new graph attention network that directly matches 2D interest points in the query image with the 3D points in the SfM model, resulting in efficient and robust pose estimation. Combined with a feature-based pose tracker, OnePose is able to stably detect and track 6D poses of everyday household objects in real-time. We also collected a large-scale dataset that consists of 450 sequences of 150 objects.

When and Why Test-Time Augmentation Works

Test-time augmentation (TTA)---the aggregation of predictions across transformed versions of a test input---is a common practice in image classification. In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental analyses that shed light on 1) when test time augmentation is likely to be helpful and 2) when to use various test-time augmentation policies. A key finding is that even when TTA produces a net improvement in accuracy, it can change many correct predictions into incorrect predictions. We delve into when and why test-time augmentation changes a prediction from being correct to incorrect and vice versa. Our analysis suggests that the nature and amount of training data, the model architecture, and the augmentation policy all matter. Building on these insights, we present a learning-based method for aggregating test-time augmentations. Experiments across a diverse set of models, datasets, and augmentations show that our method delivers consistent improvements over existing approaches.

Overcoming the Long Horizon Barrier for Sample-Efficient Reinforcement Learning with Latent Low-Rank Structure

The practicality of reinforcement learning algorithms has been limited due to poor scaling with respect to the problem size, as the sample complexity of learning an $\epsilon$-optimal policy is $\Tilde{\Omega}\left(|S||A|H^3 / \eps^2\right)$ over worst case instances of an MDP with state space $S$, action space $A$, and horizon $H$. We consider a class of MDPs that exhibit low rank structure, where the latent features are unknown. We argue that a natural combination of value iteration and low-rank matrix estimation results in an estimation error that grows doubly exponentially in the horizon $H$. We then provide a new algorithm along with statistical guarantees that efficiently exploits low rank structure given access to a generative model, achieving a sample complexity of $\Tilde{O}\left(d^5(|S|+|A|)\mathrm{poly}(H)/\eps^2\right)$ for a rank $d$ setting, which is minimax optimal with respect to the scaling of $|S|, |A|$, and $\eps$. In contrast to literature on linear and low-rank MDPs, we do not require a known feature mapping, our algorithm is computationally simple, and our results hold for long time horizons. Our results provide insights on the minimal low-rank structural assumptions required on the MDP with respect to the transition kernel versus the optimal action-value function.

Tensor-Based Channel Estimation for RIS-Assisted Networks Operating Under Imperfections

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a candidate technology for future wireless networks. It enables to shape the wireless environment to reach massive connectivity and enhanced data rate. The promising gains of RIS-assisted networks are, however, strongly depends on the accuracy of the channel state information. Due to the passive nature of the RIS elements, channel estimation may become challenging. This becomes most evident when physical imperfections or electronic impairments affect the RIS due to its exposition to different environmental effects or caused by hardware limitations from the circuitry. In this paper, we propose an efficient and low-complexity tensor-based channel estimation approach in RIS-assisted networks taking different imperfections into account. By assuming a short-term model in which the RIS imperfections behavior, modeled as unknown amplitude and phase shifts deviations, is non-static with respect to the channel coherence time, we formulate a closed-form higher order singular value decomposition based algorithm for the joint estimation of the involved channels and the unknown impairments. Furthermore, the identifiability and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are analyzed, and we study the effect of different imperfections on the channel estimation quality. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed tensor-based algorithm in terms of the estimation accuracy and computational complexity compared to competing tensor-based iterative alternating solutions.
