Semiconductor manufacturing is a notoriously complex and costly multi-step process involving a long sequence of operations on expensive and quantity-limited equipment. Recent chip shortages and their impacts have highlighted the importance of semiconductors in the global supply chains and how reliant on those our daily lives are. Due to the investment cost, environmental impact, and time scale needed to build new factories, it is difficult to ramp up production when demand spikes. This work introduces a method to successfully learn to schedule a semiconductor manufacturing facility more efficiently using deep reinforcement and self-supervised learning. We propose the first adaptive scheduling approach to handle complex, continuous, stochastic, dynamic, modern semiconductor manufacturing models. Our method outperforms the traditional hierarchical dispatching strategies typically used in semiconductor manufacturing plants, substantially reducing each order's tardiness and time until completion. As a result, our method yields a better allocation of resources in the semiconductor manufacturing process.
Federated Learning is a modern decentralized machine learning technique where user equipments perform machine learning tasks locally and then upload the model parameters to a central server. In this paper, we consider a 3-layer hierarchical federated learning system which involves model parameter exchanges between the cloud and edge servers, and the edge servers and user equipment. In a hierarchical federated learning model, delay in communication and computation of model parameters has a great impact on achieving a predefined global model accuracy. Therefore, we formulate a joint learning and communication optimization problem to minimize total model parameter communication and computation delay, by optimizing local iteration counts and edge iteration counts. To solve the problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed. After that, a time-minimized UE-to-edge association algorithm is presented where the maximum latency of the system is reduced. Simulation results show that the global model converges faster under optimal edge server and local iteration counts. The hierarchical federated learning latency is minimized with the proposed UE-to-edge association strategy.
Several approaches have been developed to mitigate algorithmic bias stemming from health data poverty, where minority groups are underrepresented in training datasets. Augmenting the minority class using resampling (such as SMOTE) is a widely used approach due to the simplicity of the algorithms. However, these algorithms decrease data variability and may introduce correlations between samples, giving rise to the use of generative approaches based on GAN. Generation of high-dimensional, time-series, authentic data that provides a wide distribution coverage of the real data, remains a challenging task for both resampling and GAN-based approaches. In this work we propose CA-GAN architecture that addresses some of the shortcomings of the current approaches, where we provide a detailed comparison with both SMOTE and WGAN-GP*, using a high-dimensional, time-series, real dataset of 3343 hypotensive Caucasian and Black patients. We show that our approach is better at both generating authentic data of the minority class and remaining within the original distribution of the real data.
We study speech enhancement using deep learning (DL) for virtual meetings on cellular devices, where transmitted speech has background noise and transmission loss that affects speech quality. Since the Deep Noise Suppression (DNS) Challenge dataset does not contain practical disturbance, we collect a transmitted DNS (t-DNS) dataset using Zoom Meetings over T-Mobile network. We select two baseline models: Demucs and FullSubNet. The Demucs is an end-to-end model that takes time-domain inputs and outputs time-domain denoised speech, and the FullSubNet takes time-frequency-domain inputs and outputs the energy ratio of the target speech in the inputs. The goal of this project is to enhance the speech transmitted over the cellular networks using deep learning models.
Current Virtual Reality systems are designed for interaction under visual control. Using built-in cameras, headsets track the user's hands or hand-held controllers while they are inside the field of view. Current systems thus ignore the user's interaction with off-screen content -- virtual objects that the user could quickly access through proprioception without requiring laborious head motions to bring them into focus. In this paper, we present HOOV, a wrist-worn sensing method that allows VR users to interact with objects outside their field of view. Based on the signals of a single wrist-worn inertial sensor, HOOV continuously estimates the user's hand position in 3-space to complement the headset's tracking as the hands leave the tracking range. Our novel data-driven method predicts hand positions and trajectories from just the continuous estimation of hand orientation, which by itself is stable based solely on inertial observations. Our inertial sensing simultaneously detects finger pinching to register off-screen selection events, confirms them using a haptic actuator inside our wrist device, and thus allows users to select, grab, and drop virtual content. We compared HOOV's performance with a camera-based optical motion capture system in two folds. In the first evaluation, participants interacted based on tracking information from the motion capture system to assess the accuracy of their proprioceptive input, whereas in the second, they interacted based on HOOV's real-time estimations. We found that HOOV's target-agnostic estimations had a mean tracking error of 7.7 cm, which allowed participants to reliably access virtual objects around their body without first bringing them into focus. We demonstrate several applications that leverage the larger input space HOOV opens up for quick proprioceptive interaction, and conclude by discussing the potential of our technique.
To design fast neural networks, many works have been focusing on reducing the number of floating-point operations (FLOPs). We observe that such reduction in FLOPs, however, does not necessarily lead to a similar level of reduction in latency. This mainly stems from inefficiently low floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). To achieve faster networks, we revisit popular operators and demonstrate that such low FLOPS is mainly due to frequent memory access of the operators, especially the depthwise convolution. We hence propose a novel partial convolution (PConv) that extracts spatial features more efficiently, by cutting down redundant computation and memory access simultaneously. Building upon our PConv, we further propose FasterNet, a new family of neural networks, which attains substantially higher running speed than others on a wide range of devices, without compromising on accuracy for various vision tasks. For example, on ImageNet-1k, our tiny FasterNet-T0 is $3.1\times$, $3.1\times$, and $2.5\times$ faster than MobileViT-XXS on GPU, CPU, and ARM processors, respectively, while being $2.9\%$ more accurate. Our large FasterNet-L achieves impressive $83.5\%$ top-1 accuracy, on par with the emerging Swin-B, while having $49\%$ higher inference throughput on GPU, as well as saving $42\%$ compute time on CPU. Point cloud registration is a fundamental and challenging problem for autonomous robots interacting in unstructured environments for applications such as object pose estimation, simultaneous localization and mapping, robot-sensor calibration, and so on. In global correspondence-based point cloud registration, data association is a highly brittle task and commonly produces high amounts of outliers. Failure to reject outliers can lead to errors propagating to downstream perception tasks. Maximum Consensus (MC) is a widely used technique for robust estimation, which is however known to be NP-hard. Exact methods struggle to scale to realistic problem instances, whereas high outlier rates are challenging for approximate methods. To this end, we propose Graph-based Maximum Consensus Registration (GMCR), which is highly robust to outliers and scales to realistic problem instances. We propose novel consensus functions to map the decoupled MC-objective to the graph domain, wherein we find a tight approximation to the maximum consensus set as the maximum clique. The final pose estimate is given in closed-form. We extensively evaluated our proposed GMCR on a synthetic registration benchmark, robotic object localization task, and additionally on a scan matching benchmark. Our proposed method shows high accuracy and time efficiency compared to other state-of-the-art MC methods and compares favorably to other robust registration methods.
Microsurgery involves the dexterous manipulation of delicate tissue or fragile structures such as small blood vessels, nerves, etc., under a microscope. To address the limitation of imprecise manipulation of human hands, robotic systems have been developed to assist surgeons in performing complex microsurgical tasks with greater precision and safety. However, the steep learning curve for robot-assisted microsurgery (RAMS) and the shortage of well-trained surgeons pose significant challenges to the widespread adoption of RAMS. Therefore, the development of a versatile training system for RAMS is necessary, which can bring tangible benefits to both surgeons and patients. In this paper, we present a Tactile Internet-Based Micromanipulation System (TIMS) based on a ROS-Django web-based architecture for microsurgical training. This system can provide tactile feedback to operators via a wearable tactile display (WTD), while real-time data is transmitted through the internet via a ROS-Django framework. In addition, TIMS integrates haptic guidance to `guide' the trainees to follow a desired trajectory provided by expert surgeons. Learning from demonstration based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) was used to generate the desired trajectory. User studies were also conducted to verify the effectiveness of our proposed TIMS, comparing users' performance with and without tactile feedback and/or haptic guidance.
Increasing the success rate of a process, i.e. the percentage of cases that end in a positive outcome, is a recurrent process improvement goal. At runtime, there are often certain actions (a.k.a. treatments) that workers may execute to lift the probability that a case ends in a positive outcome. For example, in a loan origination process, a possible treatment is to issue multiple loan offers to increase the probability that the customer takes a loan. Each treatment has a cost. Thus, when defining policies for prescribing treatments to cases, managers need to consider the net gain of the treatments. Also, the effect of a treatment varies over time: treating a case earlier may be more effective than later in a case. This paper presents a prescriptive monitoring method that automates this decision-making task. The method combines causal inference and reinforcement learning to learn treatment policies that maximize the net gain. The method leverages a conformal prediction technique to speed up the convergence of the reinforcement learning mechanism by separating cases that are likely to end up in a positive or negative outcome, from uncertain cases. An evaluation on two real-life datasets shows that the proposed method outperforms a state-of-the-art baseline.
This paper presents a new approach to obtaining nearly complete coverage paths (CP) with low overlapping on 3D general surfaces using mesh models given or reconstructed from actual scenes. The CP is obtained by segmenting the mesh model into a given number of clusters using constrained centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CCVT) and finding the shortest path from cluster centroids using the geodesic metric efficiently. We introduce a new cost function to harmoniously achieve uniform areas of the obtained clusters and a restriction on the variation of triangle normals during the construction of CCVTs. The obtained clusters can be used to construct high-quality viewpoints (VP) for visual coverage tasks. Here, we utilize the planned VPs as cleaning configurations to perform residual powder removal in additive manufacturing using manipulator robots. The self-occlusion of VPs and ensuring collision-free robot configurations are addressed by integrating a proposed optimization-based strategy to find a set of candidate rays for each VP into the motion planning phase. CP planning benchmarks and physical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We show that our approach can compute the CPs and VPs of various mesh models with a massive number of triangles within a reasonable time.
