EEG and EMG dataset for the detection of errors introduced by an active orthosis device

This paper presents a dataset containing recordings of the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the electromyogram (EMG) from eight subjects who were assisted in moving their right arm by an active orthosis device. The supported movements were elbow joint movements, i.e., flexion and extension of the right arm. While the orthosis was actively moving the subject's arm, some errors were deliberately introduced for a short duration of time. During this time, the orthosis moved in the opposite direction. In this paper, we explain the experimental setup and present some behavioral analyses across all subjects. Additionally, we present an average event-related potential analysis for one subject to offer insights into the data quality and the EEG activity caused by the error introduction. The dataset described herein is openly accessible. The aim of this study was to provide a dataset to the research community, particularly for the development of new methods in the asynchronous detection of erroneous events from the EEG. We are especially interested in the tactile and haptic-mediated recognition of errors, which has not yet been sufficiently investigated in the literature. We hope that the detailed description of the orthosis and the experiment will enable its reproduction and facilitate a systematic investigation of the influencing factors in the detection of erroneous behavior of assistive systems by a large community.

Non-adversarial training of Neural SDEs with signature kernel scores

Neural SDEs are continuous-time generative models for sequential data. State-of-the-art performance for irregular time series generation has been previously obtained by training these models adversarially as GANs. However, as typical for GAN architectures, training is notoriously unstable, often suffers from mode collapse, and requires specialised techniques such as weight clipping and gradient penalty to mitigate these issues. In this paper, we introduce a novel class of scoring rules on pathspace based on signature kernels and use them as objective for training Neural SDEs non-adversarially. By showing strict properness of such kernel scores and consistency of the corresponding estimators, we provide existence and uniqueness guarantees for the minimiser. With this formulation, evaluating the generator-discriminator pair amounts to solving a system of linear path-dependent PDEs which allows for memory-efficient adjoint-based backpropagation. Moreover, because the proposed kernel scores are well-defined for paths with values in infinite dimensional spaces of functions, our framework can be easily extended to generate spatiotemporal data. Our procedure permits conditioning on a rich variety of market conditions and significantly outperforms alternative ways of training Neural SDEs on a variety of tasks including the simulation of rough volatility models, the conditional probabilistic forecasts of real-world forex pairs where the conditioning variable is an observed past trajectory, and the mesh-free generation of limit order book dynamics.

Reliable and Interpretable Drift Detection in Streams of Short Texts

Data drift is the change in model input data that is one of the key factors leading to machine learning models performance degradation over time. Monitoring drift helps detecting these issues and preventing their harmful consequences. Meaningful drift interpretation is a fundamental step towards effective re-training of the model. In this study we propose an end-to-end framework for reliable model-agnostic change-point detection and interpretation in large task-oriented dialog systems, proven effective in multiple customer deployments. We evaluate our approach and demonstrate its benefits with a novel variant of intent classification training dataset, simulating customer requests to a dialog system. We make the data publicly available.

SlothSpeech: Denial-of-service Attack Against Speech Recognition Models

Deep Learning (DL) models have been popular nowadays to execute different speech-related tasks, including automatic speech recognition (ASR). As ASR is being used in different real-time scenarios, it is important that the ASR model remains efficient against minor perturbations to the input. Hence, evaluating efficiency robustness of the ASR model is the need of the hour. We show that popular ASR models like Speech2Text model and Whisper model have dynamic computation based on different inputs, causing dynamic efficiency. In this work, we propose SlothSpeech, a denial-of-service attack against ASR models, which exploits the dynamic behaviour of the model. SlothSpeech uses the probability distribution of the output text tokens to generate perturbations to the audio such that efficiency of the ASR model is decreased. We find that SlothSpeech generated inputs can increase the latency up to 40X times the latency induced by benign input.

A Neural RDE-based model for solving path-dependent PDEs

The concept of the path-dependent partial differential equation (PPDE) was first introduced in the context of path-dependent derivatives in financial markets. Its semilinear form was later identified as a non-Markovian backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). Compared to the classical PDE, the solution of a PPDE involves an infinite-dimensional spatial variable, making it challenging to approximate, if not impossible. In this paper, we propose a neural rough differential equation (NRDE)-based model to learn PPDEs, which effectively encodes the path information through the log-signature feature while capturing the fundamental dynamics. The proposed continuous-time model for the PPDE solution offers the benefits of efficient memory usage and the ability to scale with dimensionality. Several numerical experiments, provided to validate the performance of the proposed model in comparison to the strong baseline in the literature, are used to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Differential Diffusion: Giving Each Pixel Its Strength

Text-based image editing has advanced significantly in recent years. With the rise of diffusion models, image editing via textual instructions has become ubiquitous. Unfortunately, current models lack the ability to customize the quantity of the change per pixel or per image fragment, resorting to changing the entire image in an equal amount, or editing a specific region using a binary mask. In this paper, we suggest a new framework which enables the user to customize the quantity of change for each image fragment, thereby enhancing the flexibility and verbosity of modern diffusion models. Our framework does not require model training or fine-tuning, but instead performs everything at inference time, making it easily applicable to an existing model. We show both qualitatively and quantitatively that our method allows better controllability and can produce results which are unattainable by existing models. ACI-BENCH: a Novel Ambient Clinical Intelligence Dataset for Benchmarking Automatic Visit Note Generation

Recent immense breakthroughs in generative models such as in GPT4 have precipitated re-imagined ubiquitous usage of these models in all applications. One area that can benefit by improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) is healthcare. The note generation task from doctor-patient encounters, and its associated electronic medical record documentation, is one of the most arduous time-consuming tasks for physicians. It is also a natural prime potential beneficiary to advances in generative models. However with such advances, benchmarking is more critical than ever. Whether studying model weaknesses or developing new evaluation metrics, shared open datasets are an imperative part of understanding the current state-of-the-art. Unfortunately as clinic encounter conversations are not routinely recorded and are difficult to ethically share due to patient confidentiality, there are no sufficiently large clinic dialogue-note datasets to benchmark this task. Here we present the Ambient Clinical Intelligence Benchmark (ACI-BENCH) corpus, the largest dataset to date tackling the problem of AI-assisted note generation from visit dialogue. We also present the benchmark performances of several common state-of-the-art approaches.

BioGAN: An unpaired GAN-based image to image translation model for microbiological images

A diversified dataset is crucial for training a well-generalized supervised computer vision algorithm. However, in the field of microbiology, generation and annotation of a diverse dataset including field-taken images are time consuming, costly, and in some cases impossible. Image to image translation frameworks allow us to diversify the dataset by transferring images from one domain to another. However, most existing image translation techniques require a paired dataset (original image and its corresponding image in the target domain), which poses a significant challenge in collecting such datasets. In addition, the application of these image translation frameworks in microbiology is rarely discussed. In this study, we aim to develop an unpaired GAN-based (Generative Adversarial Network) image to image translation model for microbiological images, and study how it can improve generalization ability of object detection models. In this paper, we present an unpaired and unsupervised image translation model to translate laboratory-taken microbiological images to field images, building upon the recent advances in GAN networks and Perceptual loss function. We propose a novel design for a GAN model, BioGAN, by utilizing Adversarial and Perceptual loss in order to transform high level features of laboratory-taken images into field images, while keeping their spatial features. The contribution of Adversarial and Perceptual loss in the generation of realistic field images were studied. We used the synthetic field images, generated by BioGAN, to train an object-detection framework, and compared the results with those of an object-detection framework trained with laboratory images; this resulted in up to 68.1% and 75.3% improvement on F1-score and mAP, respectively. CS-TRD: a Cross Sections Tree Ring Detection method

This work describes a Tree Ring Detection method for complete Cross-Sections of trees (CS-TRD). The method is based on the detection, processing, and connection of edges corresponding to the tree's growth rings. The method depends on the parameters for the Canny Devernay edge detector ($\sigma$ and two thresholds), a resize factor, the number of rays, and the pith location. The first five parameters are fixed by default. The pith location can be marked manually or using an automatic pith detection algorithm. Besides the pith localization, the CS-TRD method is fully automated and achieves an F-Score of 89\% in the UruDendro dataset (of Pinus Taeda) with a mean execution time of 17 seconds and of 97\% in the Kennel dataset (of Abies Alba) with an average execution time 11 seconds.

ESTISR: Adapting Efficient Scene Text Image Super-resolution for Real-Scenes

While scene text image super-resolution (STISR) has yielded remarkable improvements in accurately recognizing scene text, prior methodologies have placed excessive emphasis on optimizing performance, rather than paying due attention to efficiency - a crucial factor in ensuring deployment of the STISR-STR pipeline. In this work, we propose a novel Efficient Scene Text Image Super-resolution (ESTISR) Network for resource-limited deployment platform. ESTISR's functionality primarily depends on two critical components: a CNN-based feature extractor and an efficient self-attention mechanism used for decoding low-resolution images. We designed a re-parameterized inverted residual block specifically suited for resource-limited circumstances as the feature extractor. Meanwhile, we proposed a novel self-attention mechanism, softmax shrinking, based on a kernel-based approach. This innovative technique offers linear complexity while also naturally incorporating discriminating low-level features into the self-attention structure. Extensive experiments on TextZoom show that ESTISR retains a high image restoration quality and improved STR accuracy of low-resolution images. Furthermore, ESTISR consistently outperforms current methods in terms of actual running time and peak memory consumption, while achieving a better trade-off between performance and efficiency.
